"Three toothbrushes... for two people? Somethings not adding up"
Someone hasn't seen the trailer for this game.
oh.
@@Kevduit x2
I was waiting for him to make a quip about the little girl from the trailer, but sadly it never came. 😔
It's actually a really good intro.
@@Kevduit AHAHAH might not be a bad idea to check out trailers for these game reviews, the 3 toothbrushes had me dying
When this game came out, this game was one of my favorites. It may seem generic now but back then this game was awesome!
no, you were young back then.
@@solitudesf8111 It was a great proof of concept, most of the systems present hadn't really been done in a zombie game up to that point unless you wanted to use janky Oblivion mods.
The game was a proof of concept that laid the groundwork for Dying Light and the upcoming Dead Island 2. Its tons of fun to play with friends and even solo it's just not very deep in DI/Riptide
@@solitudesf8111 and I was young when I played Halo 3. Doesnt make Halo 3 a bad game.
@@Blama_ This game isn't bad either. The fact that there's better games on the genre doesn't make this one a bad one.
Instead, Dead Island was one of the best in thoose years, extremely fun to play arround zombie physics, visual weapon decay, ultra satisfying kicks and overal extremely funny to play with friends. When I was younger this game scared the shit out of me when I played alone so I would always wait for a friend to do so, then IT has at least, a litte creepy atmosphere.
This game is still a ton of fun. It was always corny lol. IIRC you could just collect alcohol bottles and get shitfaced, and if you left your games public there'd be a high likelihood of someone giving you modded guns. Really great screw around game when I was in middle & high school
One of my favorite things about this game is the drunk effect scales almost infinitely, if you get enough alchohol the screen will literally do 360s.
I remember being 13 like, "damn I'm drunk as hell I'm schpinnin'."
I ended up 100%ing this game with all 4 characters, and put over 500+ hours into it. The combat was just really satisfying and joining other players games to help them out and show them all the secrets was great fun. If the phrase "so bad it's good" was a game this would be the one 👍
I am about to finish my first playthrough and I owned it on PS3. I never got very far, but me and a buddy are at 90%. I thought it was going to take like 15 hours, but it's been closer to 40 and not done yet. I'm playing the Definitive Edition on Steam. Environments are beautiful, characters and animation not so much. I could definitely see myself putting many more hours into it. It's refreshingly straightforward unlike more modern games with daily quests and other dumb stuff
@@EhurtAfy I hated the game and rushed it in 6 lol
@@KingJames-ei4io I feel like newer games always throw a wrench in the works to keep things fresh. Dead Island doesn't really 'iterate' on it's gameplay very much throughout the story. There aren't many surprises, game has a few 'heavies' like the Floaters or Rams it throws at players, but it's indeed stale. This is actually something I appreciate. Dead Island has good, simple gameplay that I can shut my brain off for and relax after a hard day of work. It's not for everyone though. So many new games feel like a second job, except they don't earn me money 😐
My favourite thing was the swing stick controls! If you play that and mod a sledgehammer with the best electric mod the ragdolls are AMAZING they work on every enemy even thugs and the straight jacket guys from Act 2
It really isn't bad at all
Back in 2011 no other game was like it in the zombie genre. It was a very unique game and honestly to this day the only games like it are Dying Light made by the same developers. It always had this horror B movie vibe I always loved.
I don't really think there has been a zombie game that has matched Dying Light or Dead Island. Most obvious close contender is the Dead Rising series, but other than that. I can't think of any.
@@nikolaisc5555 Agreed but I'd say Dead Rising carved out it's own zombie gane niche. It's more about survival and time management.
Yeah him calling it generic is very odd
as a beginning step for dying light it's fine
but it's lacking every step of the way there
@@Deadforgedead rising was somehow even goofier than dead island lol
I feel like when it came out it was ahead of the curve in some departments. The visual decay of weapons and pretty advanced damage modeling for enemies with variations in terms of dismemberment just wasn’t seen in other games like this at the time.
The compartmentalized damage is sick too, I can deliberately attack specific limbs and cripple them
Almost everything mentioned in this thread so far were already in Left 4 Dead 2 in 2009.
The only part that wasn't is the decaying weapons element, which really wasn't necessary in the first place.
Edit: Just so we're clear, I'm not trying to insult the game. Just don't pretend it was some groundbreaking bit of innovation.
@Abraham Johnathan Dude, I looked it up to make sure I wasn't full of it. Left 4 Dead did it first, and that is a fact. You're not getting around that.
@Abraham Johnathan Like I said, I looked it up for myself to know what I was talking about. I don't know what else to say to you, though I get the feeling nothing will change your mind on this.
@@mattpace1026 "pretty advanced damage modeling for enemies with variations in terms of dismemberment " Does that sound like the guy wrote Dead Island did something first? He said it was "pretty advanced". Maybe some reading comprehension problems on your part?
Kev: "THROWING EXPERT? Yeah right! I'm gonna pick the blunt weapon guy!"
Also Kev: *proceeds to throw every single weapon he picks up*
One of the games that succeeded at being a goofy zombie game you could have fun playing by yourself or with friends. Just wish it wasn't as buggy.
@N7 I remember a friend giving me a shock shotgun that would one shot everything. Wish the Definitive editions weren't so bad with alot of items being halfway in the ground and getting rid of some of the nicer details the originals had.
that one shotgun that would launch you across the map was always fun
It's a Drag by yourself
@@nestormelendez9005, not really, it was absolutely a fun game the first two times around, then you get into multiplayer and it gets even better.
@@void-master9077 by yourself it definitely is . But I do imagine with freinds it is as it looks like it was make for 4 players
The single best part of Dead Island's gameplay is how god damn satisfying throwing weapons is. It feels so fuckin GOOD.
Logan’s ultimate intensifies
Especially when those weapons are modded
I enjoy using Logan and using explosive knives (one time use) with return/ boomerang ability. While the success rate kinda low, I love it that sometimes I get them back
Actually got heavy flashbacks to the dead island trailers and how sad they are with the music and just watching kev walk past it like it’s nothing breaks my heart 😂💀
Are you talking about that trailer with the little girl? My god I recently watched it again and it still gives me chills. So sad but so damn good. I can’t wait for Dead Island 2!
everything was fine but the story
"Walk uphill both ways" is an incredible line
I think it came from Steven He
The story in this game falls apart after the first two acts, but the atmosphere is very good and the gameplay still holds up.
The jungle is my least favorite area, the prison is the most stressful, and the city and beach are the most fun to explore
@@jeremiahthongchai9912 the city is the most fun part imo, the jungle though? Cool on concept but terrible execution
@@nikolasferreira3247 the jungle had some annoying quests and the map layout of the jungle wasn't fun XD
@@RSTBKT indeed. It was just a big mess. The firefight in the destroyed airplane was cool but that's pretty much the only good part of the jungle imo. The slums was the part of the game.
@@nikolasferreira3247 Indeed. My fav is definitely slums and I even found the sewers creepy myself at my young age. I think I look at the game fondly cause its the only big zombie game I played, growing with a PS3 when everyone had left 4 dead, Dead rising, the Red Dead zombie pack, cod zombies, etc.
"I need CHAMPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGNE!"
(Still one of the unintentionally funniest quests in terms of voice acting)
dead island isnt a great game, but its intro cinematic and the who do you voodoo song are still absolutely fantastic
This game had a masterful atmosphere. I feel like it'd be a decent play if it weren't for the modern video game formula of fetch quests and skill trees
What I loved about Dead Island was that it allowed you roleplay without really breaking your immersion, besides a couple of rare cutscenes and the player arms. I had my own RP playthrough on here before a famous youtuber harassed me into deleting my channel, and my backup drive died, so the files exist in a Schrödinger state, since I can't afford to have the files recovered, if they even still exist. It's upsetting, as it was something I really enjoyed at the time.
Dude I think I need to hear more. Who was the RUclipsr and what was the circumstance?
@@Hoojo agreed what happened?
Well, to keep it brief, Joel (yes, Vinesauce), was shit-talking bronies--a popular trend at the time--in one of his videos, and thoroughly sick of it (and feeling attacked by someone I liked), I left a comment saying he was wrong, etc.
A following video he released called me out for my comment, naming me and publicly mocking me. Following this, some of his followers dislike-bombed my videos and left hateful comments, and fearing more from his sizeable community, my self-confidence hit rock bottom, and I deleted all my videos, while delisting my most popular (I was not big by any means, but I was on the slow rise and passionate, with two 20k and 30k-view videos). This was like... 7-8 years ago at this point.
@@LordMoku Man thats weak as hell. sorry to hear it. If you can find that passion again I bet youll get back up to where you were before the drama. much love
@@Hoojo Thanks, I appreciate that. Unfortunately I think it's thoroughly beaten out of me by now, though, and I'm paranoid about anyone seeing the things I do. Just don't have the energy to edit anymore, otherwise I might.
The room you went at the beginning was the family from the trailer
I’m pretty sure the only reason I spent so much time on this game was the Analog control mode. It was rough at first but being able to control the direction of swings and force crits all day was 👌 chef’s kiss.
its great with 2 handed sharp weapons cuz you can choose what limbs to kleave off of enemies, quick decaps, or nerfing thugs by chopping their arms off was always satisfying.
I really don't see how this game is generic, besides borderlands there is no other zombie game at that time I can remember that adopted the "looter shooter" philosophy within a zombie game. Not even Left 4 Dead 2 has multiple different characters who have unique skill trees and abilities but that game is way more generic imo since you are literally just mindlessly shooting zombies with the same weapons over and over again.
To be fair, one could argue that most of what goes on in The Dark Knight that doesn't involve The Joker is generic.
Playing again solo and somehow this game still give me chills, not even diying light during night time scare me as much as this gem. Probably because of the movement limitations.
I wouldn’t say this game is generic because the theme was far different from any other zombie game at the time. Dead Island is special because you’re locked on an idyllic tropical paradise that was tarnished by zombies. Exploring abandoned bungalows and resorts truly made you feel alone
The game was actually really good. There was nothing like it out there on console
You can always tell what game Kevduit is gonna make a video on next by what goes on sale on steam
Best dead island by far and it wasn’t generic and lame when it came out. I remember how much I loved it bc of coop with friends.
Co op is still awesome especially with duplication glitches!
Watched a let’s play back when it was new. He played with a group of friends and they were constantly screwing each other over. Best part was just them throwing gas bottles at each other with... explosive results.
Who was it?
@@Ho_Lee_Fook some guy who stopped making videos years ago. Was sad to see his Dead Island playthrough disappear when youtube changed their guidelines and less... family friendly videos ended up on the chopping block...
It was still fun to play with friends. Then we got dying light? Fantastic
Then we got dying light 2....
@N7 And now everyone is giving Dying Light 2 shit even though the game is fantastic, something people will realise a few years down the line.
@N7 it wasn't fantastic. I can't stand parkour
@@ghostlegit someone wants to be different
@@TheStraightestWhitest it’s just very different from what people were used to with #1 that’s all, it’s a good game but vs dying light 1 it’s not as good
I remember playing this on the 360 when it came out with some friends, was so much fun back then
I enjoyed playing this game with the analogue combat controls. Even though the camera was tempramental, swinging the right analogue sitck in an upward motion and watching your sledgehammer connect with a zombies bottom jaw and seeing it kartwheeling down the stairs backward never got old, made a generic loot and grind game so much fun to play
It wasnt that generic over a decade ago (until the expansion/'sequel' and then Dying Light, etc.) and it wasnt really meant to be serious & gritty, the premise is an over-the-top zombie apocalyse killing spree in a sunny tropical wonderland. It just had a killer CGI trailer that was only vaguely related to the game (e.g. zombies at a resort). The actual sequel, which took even longer to be made, looks to be much the same but improved mechanically & visually.
To be honest, having played both Dead island and Dying Light, I gotta say I prefer Dead Island. To me, Dying Light felt just as generic. Generic bad guy, generic protagonist, generic city full of zombies; the only real highlight was the emphasis on parkour. Everything else was just meh…
I have no idea why, but when I used to play this game I got big headaches and felt sick. Had to force myself to play sometimes when my friends got on it
Motion sickness. Some games can cause this. I had this so hard one time, i vomited instantly and went to sleep after that (Fallout 4 Nuka World DLC/ Funhouse). Never played it again.
Its the horrible headbob that makes you sick
One thing I remember about this game is that it was really good at making you wanna eat an energy bar and a can of coke
I love when ever he drinks in a game he puts the music from red dead when author and Lenny go to get a drink
Generic? Yes. So much fun? Absolutely
I actually liked this game more than Dying light. The weapon customization felt better, the combat felt more impactful because I didn't need 75 swings to kill a zombie and I could repair my weapons as much as I wanted to. Dying light felt like a tedious, running away from zombies simulator. 🧟♂️
I thought dying light was better. Mostly because of how creepy they got after sunset.
you know you can fight them instead of running right?
unless you are playing on nightmare, only smashers and the purple volatiles are sponges
its just a flat upgrade of dead island, same generic forgettable characters, story and missions
The game was awesome. It was way ahead of it’s time when it came out.
Kev says "throwing expert?" with incredulity, picks the melee expert... then proceeds to throw his weapons at everything. Classic.
One of my favourite moments of gaming happened in Dead Island 1 we were using the car somehow hit a curb flew up 3 metres got stuck halfway through a wall got out fell far enough to kill 2 of the 4 of us leaving just me and 1 other player who just said to me "remember where we parked" and ran off before dying to a Suicider I just sat there laughing until I got killed by a random infected.
It's been more than 10 years since then and I still remember that one single moment clearly don't remember sh## from the rest of the game though and I played it enough to level up Logan to max on like 4 profiles.
Well I suppose I remember getting a machete from a plane quest that was pretty good and pretty durable.
This game is amazing. I don't understand why you don't like it. It is a looter-basher kind of game, the enemies level up and there are tough enemies too. Yeah there aren't bosses but there are so much stuff to find in this game.
I remember playing as the girl in the white shirt and she was super fast and you could just run around beating ass lol it was great
This game was so good when it dropped . Idk why but the free open world first person zombie genre wasn’t as popular so this instant classic was amazing
I love the part where you had your fury ready and could have used it to kill all those infected at the pool effortlessly but instead decided to run away like crazy and get toyed around by them.
the spark plug is always the part that's missing because it realistically wouldn't weigh you down to pick up 4 for a fetch quest
Best part of this game was me grinding so goddamn long, then playing with friends and grinding with them. Then the final mission we struggle and all I remember was some dude who joined our group just 1 shot the enemy boss and remember wtf ? Realising how broken the game was
I genuinely enjoyed the first dead island when it came out - also chose Sam cause of his rage ability, and big hammers are cool! Though I ended up throwing them at enemies half the time, and that was still solid. I do believe that the Voodoo song he sings is kinda cool (even bought it on iTunes, back in the day when people paid for music) and I will hold that the Dead Island Trailer where the events are in reverse is the absolute BEST game trailer I've ever seen - it legit brought tears to my eyes, it was emotional and intense and I loved it. The game is aggressively 6/10 in design but it's easy to play and never demands you pay too much attention, making it easy for me to relax with in the evenings.
Seriously, that trailer still sets the bar for me.
I still play dead island every few months or so for a week, and i still enjoy the game. Been playing it for a decade at thise point
the absolute best thing about this game was the Sam B. song Who Do You Voodoo
this game will always weirdly be my "im gonna go chill" game. like its stressful at times, but theres just something weirdly relaxing to me about it. yeah it wasnt great, but i enjoyed it and found it fun.
Imagine being in a zombie apocalypse and just being worried about a teddy bear my name is Annie and I'm looking for my teddy bear I can't fall asleep without him
This game is honestly really good, for what we had. I loved it.
Honestly the trailer was amazing
How dare you call it generic. It's awesome!
Man, this game used to be my favourite as a young teenager, I actually think the juxtaposition of goofy gameplay and dread worked really well for the first game, exploring this beautiful resort, the epitome of good times and happiness, taken over by zombies... it always struck me.
13:40 i remember hearing that there were supposed to be child NPCs, but the devs had to change it for some reason
this is possibly the most aggressively terrible "fix" they coulda went with
Dead island ran so dying light could walk. Don’t ever put disrespect on dead island lol.
I don't think it's that generic. For a 2011 zombie game, it had an interesting setting you don't often see and a unique for the time combat system focusing more on melee weapons and dodging and less on guns. It's not the greatest zombie game ever but you're giving it way more shit than it honestly deserves.
I love this game. I'm hoping what I've been hearing about dead island 2 actually happens
I'd be happy if it's just the same game but modernised obviously. For how generic this game was, there weren't actually many games like it at the time.
If you want a Dark Gritty Zombie game that will make you shit your pants at the prospect of 7 zombies in a single bathroom stall. Project Zomboid is up your alley!
Ultra realistic games are a chore though
The thing I actually loved the most about this game was the manual aiming mode. Took a little getting used to, but you could aim at a specific body part and hold L2 to go into a lock on mode and then flip the right stick from left to right for a swing for example. Made the controls feel like Skate or something. It let you strategically aim for limbs and cut them off. Definitely great stuff that made the combat actually feel unique, and it seems to be quite the overlooked feature ;).
Yeah that’s something I miss in dying light
@@Jayjayxxx007 completely agree it would make dying light and DL 2 feel so much better, if only they could implement it.
Ouh, yeah I was waiting for some kind of information on that for Dying Light 2. Perhaps there's some kind of mod for that?
Indeed
Damn that was fast
Indeed it was
That's pretty fast
Heyo Kev I’m sure you hear it all the time, but your contents top notch, out of zanny, pongsifu, Jayvee, mythymoo, and Indiemaus you’re my favorite. Your personality and jokes just hit right man. I desperately need you to get to a mil subscribers and get the recognition you deserve.
Dead Island isn't a game that you play for the story. Dead Island is a game that you play because you just want to beat up zombies without a time limit, and the story objectives really just serve the purpose of keeping you going. The only real problem with the game is that outside of playing with friends, it doesn't do much to keep you interested because of how generic the story feels.
It is possible to level up to max level very early on. At the beginning, instead of running all the way down the hall to initiate the cutscene there is a room to the left. Push the zombie blocking the door out of the way and then jump onto the bed. The zombies won't be able to reach you, and they can be hit.
Now, knock them over and get the instant curbstomp kills. They will give massive xp for being so high of a level. Reload the checkpoint once all the zombies have been dealt with and boom! Easy leveling.
Just watched the new jacksepticeye and now this was uploaded 57 seconds ago, can’t complain at all. Life is good.
I feel like he had more fun playing this game than I did...
Perfect freaking timing bro I was getting annoyed with tik of the tok
The storage room prompt is exactly where I stopped playing this game as a kid. I was confused, never knew until much later embarrassed you were supposed to do a 180.
Watching this makes me want to play it again
I always thought dead islands story was better than dying lights
And the characters were more memorable than dog sh!t crane
Here is a forgotten game idea to try to play, split second, a racing game where you make things explode.
Dead Island may be generic, but it's an example of one of the more satisfying and fun types of generic. I still sometimes go back and play it.
I don't know how you could enjoy any game with your playstyle. You just mindlessly run around like you have ADHD the entire time. I imagine it's very hard for you to fine a game that you enjoy for more than a couple days without getting bored. I had a friend just like you and he played the same way, he was always bored of every game.
Dead Island is that strange game where the story is forgettable, but the gameplay is fun enough that I've played it through start to finish more times than any other game in my collection.
I play Dying light? I then think "Oh, this reminds me of Dead Island" then play Dead Island and love it.
Open world game? "Hey, I'm reminded of Banoi" then play Dead Island and love it.
Finishing a great story game? "That was great! Now I'm in the mood for something fun and mindless" then play Dead Island and love it.
Seriously, that game has a magnetism that has drawn me towards it more than any other.
I played Dead Island with my buddies when it came out, so I remember it being a blast. And also throw-duplicating weapons. Lots of that!
Play with friends, or not at all.
Great video Kev!
I'd love to see you keep playing this! Was hilarious and awesome! The gas tank kills about killed me!
I remember a hacker joining my game giving me a one shot revolver with a ton of ammo and left
The trailer for the game revealed what happened to the couple lying on the floor.
Dead Island but darker and with horror undertones? This game exists and Its called Dying Light. You can really feel like those two games are made by the same people, but for me Dying Light (if you forget the story) is a masterpiece
They aren't the same. Dead island was better. Just was more fun
Patiently waiting for Kev to admit that he’s been Truck-Kun this whole time, we see cars, Kev sees a weapon of mobile destruction 😭😭
2:14 back in my day we had to walk Fifteen miles to the nearest phone.
Unpopular opinion: you'll never truly experience dying light the way it was meant to be if you haven't played dead island at some point beforehand. You'll notice some stuff they used in dead island also in dying light as a small and unmentioned tribute, mostly just reused assets or models around the map and stuff like that
Yeah, Dead Island wasn't the fully realized vision that the Devs intended due to creative differences which is why people split off and made Dying Light which is one of the best zombie games ever made.
I naturally heard and physically started silently screaming “LENNY!!!!” 😂😂😂 when that music started
Man I had so much fun back on the 360 with this game. I remember joining a randoms game and he dropped me an infinite ammo one hit kill ak 47. Pretty sure I’d still have it if I dusted off the ole 360.
Jin is the worst character I’ve had the displeasure of meeting. She just causes conflict because the writers have her as this chicken without a head. The police station thing could’ve been avoided entirely if she used her ears. That being said 7/10 just for the combat and bugs
Spark plugs are ceramic in the middle leading to easy breakages
Dead Island is not popular for its story. It is popular for the gameplay to fight zombies. It's for the fun times you have playing co op with friends, with everyone kicking the same zombie.
There are too many visual glitches to take the game seriously. You could be talking to the npc about something series, and their arms and legs will glitch out.
"why is there 3 toothbrushes for 2 people???"
Iykyk
I don't care if it's generic or not. I enjoyed playing every second of it with my friends. When we finished the first one, we jumped straight to the second one.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Dead Island 2.
Ryder's dlc is a whole different story that mainly uses firearms
That room with the two dead bodies at the start was from the trailer the third toothbrush was Thier daughter's
How do i tell kev about why there's 3 toothbrush while there's only 2 body
Man I don’t give a voodoo, I love this game.
I feel like there's more cut content in this game than actual content certain NPCs are straight-up named wrong which causes some confusion when NPCs say names of people you've never met, a lot of story feels missing, and a lot of plotlines are just left in the open like that dude Sergei gives you a quest to bring him a phone and then he despawns and you never actually get said phone the quest ends when you find out his buddies are dead and you never report back to him, you basically leave all the characters you worked to save the whole game to die with zero indication you were gonna help them (with the second game opening saying "they didnt make it"), if youre lucky to find the notes you learn Xian is a chinese spy but this is never hinted at in the games apart from some hidden documents you have to go out of the way for but purna just seems to automatically know, and the big plot twist that's revealed in the DLC makes zero sense after you think about it for more than five minutes
**spoiler**
so in the dlc it turns out you were never talking to ryder you were talking to kevin this makes no sense cause kevins been impersonating ryder the whole game without ryder actually being there and I guess he was just banking on the idea ryder might show up so this entire game hes talking to you as ryder with the guy not actually showing up at the prison til like the end of the game when the heroes have already made it there
Of course it’s generic now everybody’s so fucking fickle
This game set up the zombie games we have now whatchu talking about
I'm in love with your videos man
That first room with 3 toothbrushes is from the very first trailer! The kid eats her parents and gets tossed out of the window
Yup this was my favorite zoombies game 😅
Kev: "This man has ZERO awareness".
