Anette was right for the band because she WAS part of the band. The 2 albums that she sang were two of the best selling for this band. Tuomas knows how to compose for each singer. It's ok to prefer 1 singer over another but please do not put her down by saying she wasn't the right singer. Each amazing Woman brought Tuomas's vision to life
Actually...Tuomas said in an interview the entire Dark Passion Play was written AND recorded (without female vocals) before Tuomas hired Anette. So, for this album the order of business was the other way around. Anette was selected because she fit to the music that was already written. She was a vital part in great albums. And for that i thank her. Sorry to say Anette could not deliver on stage the way she could in the studio. The best live performances I saw from her were rehearsals. I think she was trying too hard on stage or maybe it was just a lack of stamina or stage fright? ....ah well, just speculating here ...
Karaoke Nightwish? Anette was there when Nightwish was on the edge. She did a fine job and earned her place in the bands history. That’s of course something I truly respect.
I think that a decisive element in the choice of Anette was the fact that her vocal profile is completely different from Tarja's, which means to me that the band led by Tuomas made a deliberate choice, so as not to even seem like they were trying the replication of Tarja's era. This turned out to be a double-edged sword, because Anette did very well in the songs composed specifically for her voice (like this one) but she had serious problems in the interpretation of the band's old songs, composed for Tarja's voice (some of these songs were performed again only after Floor joined the band). As a result, some of the old fans of the band withdrew, but there was also a new influx of fans, from the pop-rock spectrum. And the 2 albums recorded with Anette ("Dark Passion Play" and "Imaginaerum") are considered among the band's most successful.
Just speculating, but the fact that Tarja was kind of a unicorn might also have played a part in that decision. As Tarja left, all music that was written specifically for her voice was lost. Nobody believed GLS would ever be on the set list again. We know that 'loosing' those songs was quite traumatic to Tuomas. I bet he thought "I will not make that mistake again" Who knew Tuomas would encounter a unicorn for a second time?
@@vogel2280 I disagree here since we know some of the other singers being considered back in the days, they deliberately CHOOSE to go in pretty much a diametrically opposite direction, and stated that this was specifically to avoid "merely replacing Tarja". We know they considered Floor but decided they couldn't try to do that to After Forever! - they toured with AF so they were quite familiar with Floor from that and while it wouldn't have been GLS as in say Wacken should could definitely have done *A* version even back then. It's also known that Elize Ryd applied (if you search you can find the audition video she sent in to Nightwish) and was seriously considered, but in the end they decided they wanted some very different vocally with lots of "experience" and (common speculation) also likely wanted to avoid the situation where their singer decided to study - it was long rumored that Tarja wanted a multi-year hiatus to study and that this was part of the lead-up to the split. And after the split Tarja did go to study so it's at least plausible. When looking at their decision we need to keep in mind that at this point (2005-ish) Elize was a fairly unexperienced 21 year old (danger!) in the just established band Dragonland, while Anette Olzen was 34 years old and had been in the much bigger band Alyson Avenue and toured for a decade. I can even see some of the reasoning behind the decision to go for a very different style of singer in Anette to avoid comparison, I *disagree* with that decision because it really butchered her Live for many years, there's an unstated but very real requirement to play a lot of "old crowd favorites" even at "album tours" (where you can get away with as many as 50% "new" songs) and while she tried she just couldn't do many of the old songs well because her voice was so different (and not a chameleon). But I consider that more the bands fault than her. Now, there's been lot of fantasies on "what if they choose Floor" or "what if they went with Elize Ryd" back then but there's no guarantee this would have worked out either, ciscumstance do change.

There is a short documentary when they filmed music video. They had obviously long day and were tired. Tuomas shirt open all the time and of course Emppu had to make joke about Tuomas' abs and oh boy he was so angry. Basically Tuomas said "shove it" very fast back to him. Emppu just grinned like a devil 🤣🤣
Tuomas did not want to replace Tarja with someone that sounded like Tarja. He wanted to go in a different direction, selecting Anette and her more pop rock sound. This gave Tuomas more freedom to write songs he would never have before. He wrote some really great songs on the two albums that featured Annette, several of which they still sing with Floor, including this one. Those two albums are two of their three best selling albums, along with Once, Tarja’s last album. I felt Anette did a good job on this song and a few other studio versions. My personal favorite of her’s is studio version of Meadows of Heaven. Slow Love Slow is probably the only live song with Anette worth watching. She doesn’t measure up to Floor or Tarja, but she did play a critical role in the evolution of the band, and made Tuomas an even better composer, in my opinion.
Absolutely, I agree that the band needed a new start after Tarja, and Anette fill that place really well, I know she is very different in style and sometimes looks a little out of place, but she took the challenge and in my opinion did a fantastic job with the albums that came out on her era. I think she had a lot of good performances actually, the problem to me was that on the live shows was always a little 'hit and miss' with her. Cheers!

Check out this with Floor at Wacken, you will be amazed. The thing with Anette is that we can't compare any of the songs Tuomas did for her two albums, how Tarja would have done them, but we can compare Floor to every Tarja and Anette song and how she's singing them. Tuomas wrote great music for Anette. Check out more of hers studio work. FYI Anette was also a jazz singer when she was young, that's probably why Tuomas wrote that wonderful Slow Love Slow to her, and Kai was also a jazz drummer in the beginning.
It's curious, for me this song in particular (Amaranth) doesn't work 'live' with Floor or Anette, it's one of the two songs of all Nightwish catalogue, that in my personal opinion, the magic of the studio version is way superior and unmatchable, they have something that the live versions can't recreate, same happens with Nemo. Cheers!
yes; I like Floor more, but at this time .. Floor was not available so Anette was doing Her best to keep Nightwish going until Floor was "ready". Floor has a Tattoo : Owl with Firefeather (like a Pheonix but Owl for Nightwish because they rescued each other) Tarja is doing well and Anette now too. Macro is going better and will be well (hope soon). We Fans enjoy Nightwish in all Forms 😀❤🔥
Dark Passion Play songs were ready before they chose Anette. Only vocals and orchestral parts were missing in that point. Everything else was recorded already. Technically Imaginaerum was the only album when he composed with Anette's voice in mind
That's a very good point!. I understand that Tuomas composing music with the voice of the singer in mind is a great advantage and would give better results, but even that, in the live shows they do a lot of modifications and arrangements to make it sound even better, so in theory it shouldn't matter who is singing what song. Cheers!
The singer that gave them by far their biggest commercial success, so from a commerical point of view, the perfect choice. She remains my fsvourite of the three, partly because Tumoas got the very best out of her, something he sadly hasn't done with the incredible Floor. This one, the band's best track? There's a big case for it. Don't agree with your opinions, but that's the beauty of NW.
Agree wholeheartedly, it truly is like listening to karaoke. Anette just doesn't have it whatsoever. Floor takes all these songs and brings them to a whole different threshold. I love this song, and can barely tolerate even listening to it, even though this is Anette at her best ever. Now, please go watch Floor sing this with Marko vocals also in this song at the Wacken 2013 LIVE performance. It's like night and day difference in vocal quality. So much more pleasing when Floor sings this fantastic song. ruclips.net/video/3yLMAxmlVNI/видео.html
To be fair, there are a couple of Anette songs that are great, especially Sahara. Only in the recordings though, Anette's not so much on the live versions, in my opinion. But yeah, Floor's version though. You should check out Floor's version of Sahara too. And to me, Anette's voice kinda reminds me of ABBA 😁
Anette is perfect for what Tuomas wrote her to sing, so much different when she did older NW stuff and as we all remember so well how those were sang by Tarja, that was too much for old scholl fans.
Anette is and was fantastic with her style stuff but Floor is astonishing doing Tarja and Anette stuff . Tuomas's most beautiful song is Eva done only by Anette .(Id love to hear Floor sing it but not happened yet !!! ) Meadows of Heaven Slow Love Slow and Scartale are along with Eva perfect for Anette and a strange one is Bye Bye Beautiful with Nightwish irony having a girl band overlay !!!! Anette is more poppy but she is a major part in the awesome story of Nightwish leading to the present perfection that is with Floor
She did 2 albums, both best-selling (Tuomas was really inspired in that period). Anette has several great songs, but they're somewhat off-beat from usual NW sound and they're heavily processed in studio, which she can't repeat live. Example is this song where she is doing duet with herself. Meadow of Heaven; Slow, Love, Slow; Eva, should be on your list to hear her. Cool songs that sound like some other band made them.
Two albums and they are pretty good as well. I didn't like Anette at all when this video came out, but she sings ok those poppier songs Tuomas wrote deliberately for her. What people don't think is if Anette wasn't chosen to Nightwish, they never would have gotten Floor. :-)
Yes, it's very different. Even tho I genuinely like Anette and her time in the band, I actually started to really pay attention to Nightwish when this song came out, (have heard Nightwish before, Nemo was a huge hit in my country but I found - at that time - the vocals a little tiresome, so this 'new' sound was refreshing) I really understand why some many didn't like Anette that much, the change in style was huge and very drastic, so it's natural not everyone would vibe with it. Thanks for being honest, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I'm glad you share it with us without filters. Cheers!
Floor is just perfect for Nightwish because can do metal, opera. Classical, and hard rock singing. Annette was not good on stage but 2 albums she did with Nightwish were amazing. Also Marco sang a little on this on stage which was great.
Just thank your lucky stars you're not experiencing the live Anette "experience". She's just about bearable on album, but live she's pretty attrocious.
Live at the Exit festival in Serbia Anette is very good. BTW Anette owns her own songs. Bye Bye Beautiful and Amaranth are the most viewed videos. These people and you are dead wrong. Floor's Amaranth is not good. I won't be subbing to these fools.
It was a baffling decision back then to switch from an operatic style singer to a pop style singer. It was 100% their choice though. They had classically trained singers amongst their finalists who went and rehearsed with the band (original singer of my band was one) but they chose the pop style singer for some reason. I have always felt a bit bad for Annette though. She got a lot of backlash but ultimately she did the best job she could and its not her fault that she was chosen by the band.
Simple way to keep track. All albums from 1996 to 2004 are Tarja's. Dark Passion Play and Imaginearum are Anette (2007 to 2012) and Endless Forms Most Beautiful plus Human :||:Nature are with Floor (2012 to present). I started with Anette so I do not have any issues with her voice. My only complaint is that she never tried to become more metal. If anything, she doubled down on the pop thing. Ironic that now Floor is also pursuing a pop solo career. If you haven't already, check out "Me Without You". ruclips.net/video/RAnIRd39Pr8/видео.html but also very Floor.
The only live performance I like by Anette is Slow Love Slow at the Montreal Jazz Festival. By the way Amaranth in Wacken 2013 by Floor is wonderful, especially the interaction with the audience.
I agree with you that Floor is made for this band, she can sing any and all of the songs from their catalog and do them justice. With that being said, the two albums Annette did are great albums. The songs are more poppy but still Nightwish and very listenable, way more than I thought they were going to be. The girl can sing. Saw her in a newer live video where she was guesting with another band, sorry cant remember the name, and Emppu was also guesting on the song, so maybe there’s some healing going on there between here and the band.
Please check out Annette Olzon's new band The Dark Element. You may gain an appreciation for her with a metal band that is centered around her vocal style.
No matter who is the singer. This is Tuomas' project. Anette had her strong moments there. On the albums of course. The band managed pretty good without Tarja and in my opinion many of their best songs were written in the "Anette Era".
Annette was good in the studio, but sucked live. watch Floor at wacken 2013 kill it! there's also a behind the scenes video on this. it hurt to watch Annette live, but the 2 albums she made were good sellers! for tarja, try the siren and walking in the air.
Yes, please do Slow Love Slow live at Montreux, and Scaretale official live, before you write Anette off completely! I admit she is my least favourite singer of the three, but that is partly down to weaker stage presence and I find it easier to listen to a whole album of her singing than Tarja. In fact Imaginaerum is my second-fave NW album after EFMB - and that's not just down to the writing, I think she does a bang-up job there.
I agree Anette's vocals doesn't fit so well she has a sweeter voice but not rockin' Tarja commanded the stage with her Opera sounding voice and her very colorful wardrobe with matching mic's too. But Floor to me is so much more and really fits like a glove. Besides Marco struggled by holding back his more powerful vocals when they we're with Anette. But still do check out the video version of Marco's the Islander, and Bye bye beautiful both with Anette.
I love Floor (she's THE symphonic metal Valkyrie goddess), but her more classical take on this song live doesn't fit as well as the original version with Anette. Because it's more of a pop-rock song, Anette's vocal timbre and style are the better fit for Amaranth, IMO. However, many of the songs from Anette's NW albums (Dark Passion Play and Imaginarium) work better with Floor as the vocalist.
So I guess Nightwish can't pick a good singer by your logic. Old video but check the view count on this video. I guess they were wrong too. Nice breakdown
Some of my favorite song from Nightwish are from the 2 records Annette sang on. However, I agree that she was not the correct fit for Nightwish. Tuomas needed to make a change of vocal style. It would be silly to try to replace Tarja with a clone. Even if you could find one. Don't be to hard on Annette. How could she turn down the chance for stardom. Even though she had no chance to do justice to older Tarja songs. It turned out to be a sad ending for her. This was a big hit for them. Also not a fan of the camera work for this video.
Not right? Its too strong. Funny thing is. Anette could sing Tarja songs. Some of them were good. Floor can make great Tarja, always. Period.at the same time. There are few songs were Floor is not the Best and its coming when we talk about .. Anette originals. Listen to Slow love slow or Sahara. Then tell me Floor is better.

@@Piia2023 I'm pretty sure the entire album was written and scored before Anette was hired
@@nicod1361 yes, you right, but not all songs was written before Tarja left, but yes it was all done when Anette came along...
In my opinion, Anette's greatest songs in Nightwish isSCARETALE
yes; I like Floor more, but at this time .. Floor was not available so Anette was doing Her best to keep Nightwish going until Floor was "ready".
Floor has a Tattoo : Owl with Firefeather (like a Pheonix but Owl for Nightwish because they rescued each other)
Tarja is doing well and Anette now too.
If you listen "Meadows of heaven" you realise that she is really good in her own style of singing.
Now the live version.....🤣🤣
To be fair, there are a couple of Anette songs that are great, especially Sahara. Only in the recordings though, Anette's not so much on the live versions, in my opinion. But yeah, Floor's version though. You should check out Floor's version of Sahara too. And to me, Anette's voice kinda reminds me of ABBA 😁
All love all era...but..for my taste is Anette my favorite. Her dancing? Yes. Fuck all metal cliches.. :) She´s rock!
Anette is perfect for what Tuomas wrote her to sing, so much different when she did older NW stuff and as we all remember so well how those were sang by Tarja, that was too much for old scholl fans.
Now check out Wacken 2013 live version of Amaranth 😁🤘
You should try to find a live performance with Anette..... Then I want to hear your judgement. 😂
Much love to you and Ukraine
🌻🌻🌻💙💛💙
Anette is and was fantastic with her style stuff but Floor is astonishing doing Tarja and Anette stuff .
Tuomas's most beautiful song is Eva done only by Anette .(Id love to hear Floor sing it but not happened yet !!! )
Meadows of Heaven Slow Love Slow and Scartale are along with Eva perfect for Anette and a strange one is Bye Bye Beautiful
with Nightwish irony having a girl band overlay !!!!
Anette is more poppy but she is a major part in the awesome story of Nightwish leading to the present perfection that is with Floor
Please check the Buenos Aires version.
Still a cool reaction👍👌💓
Greetings from the Netherlands ❤❤
And people never think that Wacken had been with Anette and not Floor...!
Floor ❤
Yes, it's very different. Even tho I genuinely like Anette and her time in the band, I actually started to really pay attention to Nightwish when this song came out, (have heard Nightwish before, Nemo was a huge hit in my country but I found - at that time - the vocals a little tiresome, so this 'new' sound was refreshing) I really understand why some many didn't like Anette that much, the change in style was huge and very drastic, so it's natural not everyone would vibe with it. Thanks for being honest, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I'm glad you share it with us without filters. Cheers!
Tarja ❤
🤍Anette4ever🤍
I agree she seemed very awkward in her movements . 2 albums 2007 - 2012
You mean this? This was 2010. ruclips.net/video/fDUH7S8vtjQ/видео.html
I seriously doubt NW guys would do ever anything with her again.
Please check out Annette Olzon's new band The Dark Element. You may gain an appreciation for her with a metal band that is centered around her vocal style.
No matter who is the singer. This is Tuomas' project. Anette had her strong moments there. On the
albums of course. The band managed pretty good without Tarja and in my opinion many of
their best songs were written in the "Anette Era".
Dark Passion Play was not written for Anette
@@nicod1361 I didn't get the idea behind that sentence. Imaginaerum was not written for Floor. So what?
@@rpgp6065 it's a fairly obvious statement
@@nicod1361 And what it was supposed to mean?
Annette was good in the studio, but sucked live. watch Floor at wacken 2013 kill it! there's also a behind the scenes video on this. it hurt to watch Annette live, but the 2 albums she made were good sellers! for tarja, try the siren and walking in the air.
I also love Floora version of this song in Wacken!
Nice breakdown
i'm not saying that at all. Tarja is great at what she does and Floor is the best possible fit for them and fantastic.
If you check out Floor doing this live you are still going to think this is like a karaoke. Floor is doing it like it should be for Nightwish
There are few songs were Floor is not the Best and its coming when we talk about
.. Anette originals. Listen to Slow love slow or Sahara. Then tell me Floor is better.
