actually really common among ESL learners (or common among every learner of a language) I personally used to do it when I was learning English as a child as it helps to orient words together, you learn a lot of compound words naturally that way, you learn about the difference between an open compound word like "ice cream" 7 "ice skates" and closed compund words like "anywhere" & "anybody" and hyphenated compounds like "check-in", "life-size" & "nitty gritty" personally I use Anki (which sadly seem to turn into the new "I use Arch BTW" meme).
