There is NO PLACE in the NHL for this

  • It is rare that NHL fans can agree on much, but Brendan Gallagher's dirty elbow hit on Adam Pelech in tonights matchup between the New York Islanders and the Montreal Canadiens was one I think we can all agree has NO PLACE in hockey. In a game that marked the return of legend Patrick Roy to Montreal as new coach of the Islanders, it was actually a really good game! There was a nice moment where the Canadiens honoured Roy during the Canadian Anthem as well. As for the game, the Canadiens came out of the gate hot and were up by 3 after 20. They were up by 2 heading into the 3rd when Brendan Gallagher decided to lay a disgusting hit on Islanders Adam Pelech. He caught him right on the chin with a nasty elbow and received a match penalty getting ejected from the game. This allowed the Islanders a 5 minute powerplay to get back into the game. I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

Unearned, I'm pretty sure he earns every ounce of it. But this is definitely different, and absolute garbage hockey. I've never like him, I think he is a shit heal rat on the ice and he finally proved it 100% with this gross hit. Can't wait to see who makes him pay for this one, and if he turtles (which I expect he will) I hope they keep after him till he stands up like a man and faces the music.

Great point. The League really doesn't care about the players - they are just parts to a machine that produces profits. parts can get replaced - there is an endless supply. The NHL in it's current state is a corrupt monopoly with no oversight, they are above the law in many cases. Just ask the Chicago Blackhawks about how they muzzled Kyle Beach for years over his molestations by Brad Aldrich or protected Bobby Hull from the police on domestic abuse charges. It's simply all about the money, it always has been. The League cheated and stole from it's players for decades before they unionized and got player agents to represent them. It's history with respect to players safety and well being is bleak. They speak to improve things but much is the same as it has always been. The NHL does not lead - it follows slowly. It is slow to learn, slow to admit failure, slow to change, it is run by a dinosaur who hasn't had an original or inspiring thing to say in decades. Yet they play ads saying how the game could possibly be better ? It sounds like russian propaganda, saying the opposite to the truth to turn logic on ot's head. There is a ton they could do to make it better. Like removing the grotesque moving ads on the boards for a start. Improving awful refereeing, it is currently the worst I have ever seen. Defining League Rats and aggressively penalizing them so they stop cheating the game. Suspensions to be tied to injury time, so Gallaghers head shot = time off for injured player. If such a system was in place, hits like his would stop. But the League doesn't want it to stop - controversey sells tickets. This is the unsaid truth to the current state of the game - profits over safety, profits over fan enjoyment, profits over pain and suffering. Sadly, the NHL is just another greedy, sloppily run buisness with it's priorities backward.

He's always been one of the more physical players on the team but this hit is just stupid. Let guys like Marchand do crap like that, it's way below the standard in Montreal. Monahan is basically paid league minimum on an expiring contract, can play on any line and wing, 5v5, special team, you name it. I think every single team looking to do any damage in the postseason will AT LEAST enquire about him to the Habs GM before the TDL.
I can see AT LEAST 8 teams that would look so much better with him in their lineup, with NONE of the usual cap gymnastics usually required to get such a rental.
He's been paired with the most snake bitten forward all season and still produce well, and is such a dream to coach.
Oh I forgot one last thing. One top of his defensive play, he's a wizard for faceoffs. Better stats than Matthews at almost 56% of the 700+ FO he took so far. Signing the guy for that 1 year 1.2M contract was genius man, but I never thought he'd get that good that fast given the huge injuries he had to fight the past 3 seasons.
I wonder what MTL is looking for in exchange.
Would picks only be okay or what? What do you guys think they would want?
    On the actual subject :

I know first hand and I say my piece. Both Lucic and Brendan were stars with the Vancouver Giants back in the day. After good starts, they both changed. Lucic was a great scorer and tough as shit. Brendan was a skillset officiando. What happened? I know he is not a big man but he kept it cool. What he did is unexcusible. As for Lucic.....no comment

I think a good way to reduce the number of hits like this that occur are significant financial penalties. Pelech earns $70,000 per game, so make Gallagher pay Pelech's salary for every game that he misses to injury. Also, Gallagher should forfeit his per-game salary for every game he misses during his suspension, as well as whatever pathetically low the NHL fines him.
If Pelech out for 10 games and Gallagher receives a 5 game suspension, he'd have to pay Pelech $701, 000 and lose $396,000. Losing $1,097,000 - now that's a deterrent!

  • @57Jimmy

Those type of deliberate head hunting hits need to be a minimum 25 game suspension and a full years contract forfeiture. Hit the hitter where it hurts the most! MASSIVE fines.
Another penalty they could receive would be suspension for as long as the other player takes to return to game ready status. Oh, a career ending injury?…Same goes for he who caused it.
Only then will those who deliver these kinds of hits actually know the severity of their dirty hits

I think it is the sort of hit that needs a ban for the rest of the season and may be one where criminal charges should be laid. Looking at the video it seems to be premeditated and may constitute assault. The fact that it happened in a game of hockey, doesn't allow someone to attempt to concuss another person. I realize all hockey players probably have to sign all their human rights away in order to play in the NHL, but still it is going to be a legal nightmare that is going to cost the NHL's insurer millions, I can see their premiums going up by a lot just from this one incident.
It may be a lot cheaper and easier for the league to sack the guy, and get it classified as a crime, than try and pass it off a "Normal" risk of hockey.
