It was a true honor to sing this masterpiece along side my fellow brothers in the Texas All-State tenor-bass choir. Truly a life changing event to remember :)
What a great composer Sydney Guillaume is ! His compositions bring to mind the choral works of the other great Haitian composer Emile Desamours. We are all seduced by the finesse of his compositions and the beauty of the kreyol lyrics. Congratulations Sydney ! Your chamber music compositions are also great.
I got to high school a couple years after this song was displayed at TMEA but I have to say it has become my favorite choral piece by far. I have never performed this or learned it myself but the music speaks for itself in so many ways. Reading the comments it is easy to see that it has touched not only me but so many others as well. Thank you Guillaume for giving the world something so amazing.
This choir has made me fully understand the difference of reading music and getting accuracy vs making music and making you feel something with emotion rather than a page with notes and words. This is simply beautiful no doubt about it wonderful piece!

Our high school mens chorus is singing this piece and after about 4 months of rehearsal we are finally starting to put everything together. The language and text are beautiful and i could not find a better example of a tension and release. By far the most challenging piece we've ever sang as well as the most inspirational. Thank you Sydney Guillaume for composing this piece!
This song single handily changed the future of my life and made me realize that I want to be a music teacher/conductor. Thank you so much for this work of life changing art.
OMG It is just too cool to hear my haitian Kreol being sung like that....Sidney mon frère. ...milles mercis. Je suis fiere de toi...les mots me manques
It’s been over a month since I sang this at TMEA and I still can’t stop crying about how beautiful Gagòt is. This piece is possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever had the privilege of singing in my life. I feel so lucky to have learned this music, to have felt this music, to have performed this music, in a way I haven’t ever before. It’s truly magical. Out of all the all-state pieces this one will for sure stay me me the longest. My sincerest gratitude goes out to you Mr. Guillaume 🙌🏻
You're very welcome, Justin. Thank you for taking the time to share that. I can't wait to see the video of your TMEA performance. I LOVE the audio recording!
BRAVO! AYIBOBO! BRAVO! You sir, are a genius. And the uplifting message, delivered with such poise and composure, speaks voluminously of the Haitian liberation spirit: "Zeffò nan soufrans ki póte delivrans". Blacks and people in bondage worldwide got inspired to live by this credo after the effort on Hispaniola lead to delivered and declared deliverance on January 1, 1804. Thank you @Sydney Guillaume for your message and choosing this powerful partner (Choir and Conductor) to deliver it. BRAVO! AYIBOBO
I absolutely cannot wait to perform this in the TMEA tenor-bass choir! I have cried on multiple occasion at the pure emotion of this piece. Such a blessing to sing such amazing music with such a talented group!!!
I listen to this every morning when I wake up. And thinking about the English poetic translation makes me so happy and know that it’ll all be alright. This song is so beautiful and Westminster Chorus’ performance is by far the best I’ve heard. Guillaume, thank you for this. I really hope that if I make the TMEA All-State men’s chorus, that you would hear us and I get to meet you in person and just thank you for the piece. Truly an inspiration. Thank you
I knew that you were talented since the day in 1999 you joined and performed at the Haitian American Youth Organization of Kendall ( HAYO). Hope one day, you can come back and perform for the new generation of HAYO 's members. We will invite the alumni to attend as in a family reunion. Congratulations for your talent, discipline and self-determination.
I just joined the Men's Chorus from BGSU this semester. I am very excited to work on this beautiful piece and can't wait for your residency later this month! :)
Totally! They are in part of the Westminster Chorus, or at least back then they were. I can't wait to hear Notre Dame Glee Club's rendition. Keep me posted! :)
TMEA... i'm the only one in my school who made it to Pre-Area and I hate the fact that i'm the only one who made it because I felt like at least one person out of the people who made it to Region at my school deserved to make it. that's why I gotta work hard now in order to make All-State. Not for me, Not for my school, but for my friends in Choir. I love them dearly, and I won't stop working until I get there for them. This song is probably one of the hardest songs I ever had to count and pronounce w/ precision. Hopefully and just hopefully... I make it passed Pre-Area
honestly worried about the all-state audition rounds with this piece, if they do anything after 3:35 then I'm in for a rough time cause this piece makes me WAY emotional. In four years of the TMEA competition, few works have moved me to my core so deeply (Shout outs to Heaven's Flock and She Walks in Beauty as runner ups) Best of luck to anyone participating in the TMEA All-State process!

Shining Armor Every other respected choir in the universe only ever performs standing like statues. It’s nice to see this choir actually feel the music and not become bound by the typical posture choirs take in singing typical choir music.
@Debussy To make such a haughty observation suggests to me that you missed the essence and meaning of Gagót. Did the hand and body movements look a bit...say..."messy" to you compared to another recital of a similarly emotional piece? Did you see the Conductor? Any hand movements at the, Ah! moment? You don't have to apologize because doing so could be...say...messy. Merci!

A REPLY YES! And trust me when I say we didn't disappoint!
Very nice to hear my native haitian creole interpreted by this well-known american choir ...
What a choir! The music is extraordinary, but the interpretation , the accuracy is something else.
Marvelously done. Bravo.
