As history, Paths of Glory, which was made during the height of “lions being led by donkeys” narrative, is highly misleading. There were generals like Moroe -he was largely based on Nivelle-but they were more often like Petain (famous for how much he cared for his men’s welfare and how he ended the mutinies of 1917). In fact, how those 1917 mutinies were handled went almost the exact opposite of what the movie would imply-the soldiers’ grievances were largely met with concessions and reform.
Always saw this movie as fervently anti military institutions, which I applauded but you make good points about the ways it elevates the individuals. I hope this gets more views Paths of glory is probably Kubrick's more underrated movie.
Yeah, the current propaganda model of military movies is such garbage these days. Oddly enough, I would say the movie Civil War was a more accurate war film than some of the other stuff coming out lately. Kirk Douglas was definitely the “man’s man” of his era, but even he had principles these modern chuds couldn’t fathom. The guy did his own crazy stunts in The Villain at 60 years old and still went out in public even after his stroke, not concerned with people thinking this once powerful, model of masculinity struggled to walk and speak. We could all take some lessons from him.
My favourite war movies: Johnny Got His Gun (1971), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Paths of Glory (1957), Dr. Strangelove (1964), Slaughterhouse-Five (1972).
“Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Major Major it had been all three. Even among men lacking all distinction he inevitably stood out as a man lacking more distinction than all the rest, and people who met him were always impressed by how unimpressive he was.” I think about this quote almost daily
all quiet on the western front are great movies, both the 20's version and the new one today, waiting for Barry's miraclebvideo... no pressure I just haven't forgotten it
Thanks for making this video. I now have another movie to watch. Funny enough, this reminds me of Johnny Got His Gun. Dunno if you have an interest in that or not, but it's an interesting story as well.
But what about the true story of the greatest commander-in-cheif to ever lead our military, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter?! Edit: fuck yeah, 1st like from a channel i truly enjoy and respect! 🎉 Keep doing what you're doing mac, love your analysis vids.
Hey man I am from india 🇮🇳 Can u plz put a video about HOW TO WRITE GREAT DIALOGUES like "with great power comes great responsibility" "U either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" (FORESHADOW) "hardest choices requires the strongest will" "Why do we fall sir so that we can Learn to pick up ourselves" "No amount of money ever bought a second of time" "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” "Hope is a good thing, may be the best of things, and no good thing ever dies" Because I personally believe u have the ability to answer this Because of ur EXPERIENCE
That's old man talk. Like, I bet you know Vietnam, Korea or WW2 vets who boasted that they had to carry triple the equipment, double the distance, while fighting off nazicommies than you had to 😂
As an actual service member, I can assure you that the military was and will be better in every way with Trump as Commander in Chief. We are excited to be a lethal force and not a social experiment
Forever grateful that Paths of Glory inspired David Simon’s writing on The Wire in exploring how bureaucratic corruption ruins law enforcement

Kirk Douglas was a cinematic giant, I watched this film with Mt grandparents in the 90s.
Shame he was an a-hole.
@Chair-by-a-bench too true of too many talented people
I am in the military(infantry)and I do smoke cigars and try to be funny but I am no badass. I am just a guy with a gun.
Just know I appreciate you man
That's badass
Paths of Glory is probably my favorite Kubrick too. Not a common opinion so it's nice to see someone else share it.
I'm not a Kubrick fan but I always loved this one

I just thought it was crazy that I watched a video featuring Michael Douglas talking about Falling Down, so I had to watch this.
Catch 22 is the best movie showcasing military bureaucratic bs.

I need to rewatch this movie, I haven't seen it since I was 13. I remember feeling angry at the injustice of it all.

I was wondering when the Great Kirk Douglas would cross your mind

All Quiet on the Western Front is nearly a century old and still has not been surpassed.
A film being made on that scale in the 1920s is unfathomable to me.
You should do 12 angry men next on this topic
Hope you add Juan from Moonlight to this series. Or an analysis of masculinity in moonlight in general. One of the great great movies of the 2010s

6:53 stealing images and recontextualizing them… Kubrick would be proud
Great video.
By the way, would you be down for reviewing Major Crimes?
Maybe not Solid Snake? I dunno. I love the series but admittedly do not get a lot of its themes at first. 😂
Yeah I just needed a video game character with a cigar lol
About 1:05 into this I had to stop. I will not stand for this James Franco Slander….. he was nu-goblin 😢
Everything was great until you mentioned the current military which is in fact a joke. Take it from a Vet who knows.
That's old man talk. Like, I bet you know Vietnam, Korea or WW2 vets who boasted that they had to carry triple the equipment, double the distance, while fighting off nazicommies than you had to 😂

Imagine defending a convicted felon and compulsory liar, known hater of dead veterans and adulterer, and accusing another of being political....
@MrZauberelefant imagine believing all the lies, imagine only having politics as a personality.
