I usually don't think a foam pop filter for a mic detracts from the sound, making it well ... muffled. I think it does help with the very close to the mic work. Excellent sounding capsule. In other DIY mics you've demoed, I was nervously deciding the signal would require a de-esser effect. In this case, I'm amazed to say it didn't seem to need one. Rich lows, accurate highs with a nice hi-mid peak, and now that you mention it, rich and smooth mids too. I don't know that I wouldn't want one with a smaller body, but a normal sized capsule, but you're right. There's something special going on there.
This video is fantastic. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Arienne Audio K87 capsule, although it might take a little while. Your review has had a significant impact on me. Thank you very much.
I totally feel the Goldilocks thing going on here too, but if you can, come back and watch tomorrow's video to see if you like the mod that's about to happen to this mic.
Oh wow. It has that "Neumann shimmer" in the high mids and highs that I associate with the 87 and 103. I've never heard that in other DIY 87s. I like the more midforward tuning as well, even if I'm personally not the biggest fan of the shimmer.
Yeah, Ari at Arienne Audio captured that Neumann tone pretty well in her design of the capsule. It’s the only capsule for DIY so far that can get that close to the original.
This is the same Dany Bouchard d87 circuit that I transplanted into the 1979. I totally forgot that I tried this with Arienne’s capsule. The one thing I didn’t like was this super tall headbasket. Gave it way too much top end.
Haha I'm watching this making salad....you got that low mid back with the hat because you leaned in and chewed on it ;) Good work though, way nicer than whatever you used on your last neumann interface vid, that was overcooking my eardrums 🎉

The Arienne Audio k87 just sounds so great. The midrange on it is very pleasing to the ear.

It’s an amazing capsule.
Sounds Perfect both ways, Grat Job there :D for both, You and Arienne :D🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
Yeah her k87 capsule is amazing.
Because of your videos now I'm considering to get into the DIY mic scene. I will start with a King Bee , I will get a new body and capsule for it.
That’s awesome! Enjoy your DIY journey and beware, because once you get bitten by the mic DIY bug, there’s no going back.
I also did a D-87 with that. I want one more for a Fuchs’s U-87A clone. Cool vid as always!
The Fuchs is so cool. I’ve bee thinking of re-homing my Fuchs AI into a large body like this one.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I’m planning to build it to generic U87 copy body for now, but I think I’ll rehome that to decent body like syt-5 soon😂
That’s a good idea. Exactly what I did with this mic. Originally built in an old CAD gxl2200 body.
I miss the bass but the shimmer is insane!! Super 3d sound that just pops. No joke, for the right project this thing is magic
Right? It’s pretty cool. But check out tomorrow’s video and see if you like the difference.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Will do!
This is very good mic capsule!
It really is. Ari is blowing my mind with these great new capsules. Makes me want to build lots more mics.
i feel that mic is just right
I totally feel the Goldilocks thing going on here too, but if you can, come back and watch tomorrow's video to see if you like the mod that's about to happen to this mic.
Sounds amazing. Curious to see how the Dachman audio U87 compares to this! 🤔
Would be interesting, but I do not have a Dachman.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff would be cool to see you get your hands on one.. then shoot it out with one of your sweet u87 DIYs

@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff makes me wonder what it'd be like in that tiny, super quiet mic you'd built previously.
The Fuchs AI clone. Yeah, I’ve been wondering the same thing.
Oh, just found this as I wished on my last comment to you! This is amazing, Mark! Thanks a lot 🙏 can you share what trafo is inside?

@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff totally amazing what you're doing here. Thank you very very much!
how long doe the shipping takes before getting to you ?
For the capsule? I don’t remember but it wasn’t long.
Where can I buy one please?
It’s DIY. You have to build it. Or find someone (else) who will build it for you.
Sounds great! ALTHOUGH, I haven't heard a mic yet that didn't sound good on your voice!!! Lol.
Thanks Dean! Yeah, that’s actually something I need to address next week.
what's the feedback on the circuit like, default?
Yup. It's a cut-n-dry, garden-variety D87 build. Tune in tomorrow to see how a simple mod inside the headbasket makes a difference.
But why don`t you put a real neumann to listen them both ?
Unfortunately, I didn't have the real Neumann u87 at the time this video was made.
Haha I'm watching this making salad....you got that low mid back with the hat because you leaned in and chewed on it ;)
Good work though, way nicer than whatever you used on your last neumann interface vid, that was overcooking my eardrums 🎉
I’m glad you like it better. It’s the same mic on both. 😱
what mic pream is used in this video ?
Apollo with Neve 88rs plug in.
