bad day at work, came back home, shower, had chicken and rice, a nap, woke up, grabbed an energy drink and a kit kat bar and behold, a new irate video, my day just got better.
For any cine buffs out there, you'll know that Mario Bros 3 was first shown in the 1989 Fred Savage film The Wizard. When the audience at the cinema got a first look, they thought it was joke since no one talked about it in magazines or tv/radio, until the next year.
I said it again before, I really prefer this type of videos. Chill, informative, grounded, no need for over the top swearing or skits shoved in them. Might be on the minority here, but I feel it suits you better.
Super Mario Bros 3 was my first video game. It came with my NES. Since I was a penniless kid and my parents bought it for me, I played this game for over a year before getting another game cartridge. Next thing I know my mothers buying every game she comes across. And with the SNES being out for a while; rental stores end up liquidating stocks of NES games, which end up in my room. That tends to happen when a console is at the end of it's life cycle. Everything is dirt cheap. Best time to buy. I even still take advantage of these sales today. When the Wii ended, I got one cheap with a hundred games and several wiimote attachments.
Chris, I'm going through your channel and watching the videos I missed these past few years and let me tell you, your work brings back memories. I miss the old RUclips when people had to be creative instead of getting paychecks to fake their interests. Keep up the good work, man!
So, in G-1 you get to cheat to get to -1. There is a way to get to those without the Game Genie, but it's hard. I forgot how, but did it. The NES version of the minus level is different from the Famicom Disk System version. A few of those other levels looked like levels from Super Mario Bros. 2 (1986) [aka The Lost Levels] [Some levels in The Lost Levels were previously in Vs. Super Mario Bros.]
You sure managed to make all these videos that were in total over 50 minutes long into one abridged version that's around 20 minutes long, I'm proud of you.
Thanks for uploading all these older videos together in one Chris. Looking forward to whatever you plan on doing next cause your videos brighten our day😎👍🏻
24:06 : 256 to be exact. (Since the World counter is stocked into an 8-bit bank just like the rupee counter in The legend of Zelda which stops at 255) I won't be surprised if there's a world 0-1
8:10 Yeah; if you swim too high, it freezes. :/ 9:52 I used to love going through this one (ZEAPYE) as well as VEAPYA. The enemies can be random, but once it crashes and you reset, all enemies after the coins and powerup are gone until you hard reset and re-enter the codes. 10:17 sometimes has a Koopa shell that you stomp as you go off the ledge. But Mario is frozen and the shell isn't, so the Koopa Troopa comes back to life and shrinks Mario or goes through him. I can't remember.
Well, SMB2 had warps, but they weren't as well implemented compared to SMB1 and SMB3. First you had to find a potion, throw it down to create the door near one of the pots, go through the door, jump up on the pot, and push down. Unless you knew exactly which pots were warps, it wouldn't work. Back in the 80's, unless you had Nintendo Power or knew a classmate at school who knew all the secrets, you'd have to take a wild guess at which pots were warps. Also, even when you did find a warp, you didn't get to select which world you wanted to go to. It would just skip you ahead a couple worlds. For example, if you wanted to go to world 4, you'd have to use the warp pot by the brick building in world 1-3. If you wanted to go to world 5, you'd have to go to the secret door leading to the cave with the warp pot at the bottom of the waterfall in world 3-1. If you wanted to go to world 6, you'd have to use the warp pot by the whale in world 4-2. Finally, if you wanted to go to world 7, you'd have to use the warp pot high atop the ledge after climbing up the ladder in world 5-3 (which was very difficult to reach sometimes). The warps just weren't as fun to use in the second game compared to the first and third games. But yeah, I agree: SMB2 is considered to be the "black sheep" by many in the Mario series, and for good reason. Still a fun game, but not my favorite of the franchise. Great review, Chris!
1:25- I'd like to see Chris review Popeye some day. The arcade, the Intellevision port, the NES port, and even Popeye 2 for GameBoy. It's not a bad game, but it deserves a look. I'm kind of surprised he skipped it when talking about arcade to home console ports.
Now this is your best video, this is your still of a episode. 👍 great job, be yourself. 7:46 wow 😳 cool, I did not know that. Thank you. World A-1 through Z-9 is like Mario Maker
With a level editor you can access even further crazy worlds that you couldn't with just the codes..just remove the barriers hindering you and the weird levels keep going!!
To give a technical explanation. Each world has an ID. So these glitched worlds are actually just tiles, so the game reads the first couple of characters as level data, if it aligns you get a normal stage, but sometimes you’ll get a new level like T-1, but most of these glitched worlds are just normal stages but either using a different color pallet, or theme (underwater, overworld underground) Like H-1
Pretty weird how lots of these strange levels are water worlds.. or a regular world with Mario swimming! I remember being blown away when I first found out about the -1 world .. which of course is also a water world.. lol
Never stop, dude! It's always a pleasure to see your videos. I watch them since my very first account of RUclips, now deleted: it's been a very long time....
King Koopa...this was before Bowser was his name. Even the original manual listed him as King Koopa. I realize his name is probably Bowser Koopa. But, like you, I was born in 84 and I loved this game still do. So, I still call him King Koopa when I'm referring to the original game. I'm glad you did too when you saw him on the lost level Great video as always. And Mario 3 is probably my favorite game. I love Mario 3. Such an amazing game and so many fond memories.
We had a bootleg Famicom when i was selected with free games and Mario is one of it. We didn't even have game genie but i discovered that you can just select level at the title screen but the number change was quite slow. So i long pressed B patiently until i got to the point where i reached beyond world 8-4 and those were exactly the level of that i remembered! I was really tripped out. I was only 6 and i'm the one who discovered it
I loved when you first did these Game Genie explorations a while back. Some really psychedelic stuff in these codes. Man I wish I could play these levels while listening to Jefferson Airplane and smoking weed 😃
Love your content, man. Your consistency and energy are infectious. As an area you could improve, I would encourage a quick script review on your videos. For instance you say “this game” about a dozen times when talking about Mario 3. No hate/shade intended. Just somethin I noticed. Keep makin great content, brother.
I feel like if I had Super Mario Bros. as a kid, and saw the "trippy" levels like 9-1, I would have been amazed by them, and probably would have thought I was dreaming or something. It likely sounds like nothing now, but as a kid, discovering an actual bonus level in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (my actual childhood Mario game) was a big deal for me, so I can only imagine what I would have thought of a literally missing level that looks noticeably different in color to what I'd usually see.
9:37 You can do it too by putting SMB and then pulling it. Enter Tennis, and do a little gameplay. Pull it out and then enter SMB again to get World 9.
This video is pretty awesome. Which episode is the one where king hippo and the eggplant wizard have the guns I like that scene. You make me laugh alot even when I'm stressed out your videos make me laugh. Best regards Nikita.K
I’m 7:30 In and I don’t know if you mention it but swapping Mario 1 (single cart or the triple cart / Mario duck hunt doesn’t work) with tennis on a toaster or famicom or top loader gives you access to these levels too
I remember borrowing a bootleg NES cartridge from a classmate that had a lot of bootleg games and it included these levels too, I always was jealous and curious about them, that was back in the late 80s before Rom hacks was a thing, and even before I heard of Mario 2 Lost Levels.

For my 5th birthday, my mom got my a NES that had Super Mario 3 packed along with it! I also got a bunch of Ninja Turtles stuff from the kids who came to the party! That was a good birthday!
I think Peach was hanging out with Zelda in Hyrule Castle. If you just continued the Mario in Zelda level, he could have found her. 😉😂 But seriously, did enjoy this, was cool to see hidden levels in Mario. Thank you, Chris.

Thank you for sharing.
What a recovery, sounds like a great time!
I still recall being 5 years old and thinking the first level was the entire game. Once I finally beat it, I was shocked there was more!
I thought that was just me 😂
Woah wtf me too. looking back, its like “of course there’d be more” but back then, beating one level at like 4 years old felt like a damn marathon
2020 had its silver-linings: The IRateGamer comeback is one of them!! 🤘🤘🤘
Agreed
And it hasn't changed since he first came on the scene. A real throwback.
If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Shame you couldn't go to U-2, would've loved to hear some 8-bit Bono!
Wait...didn't you do this when you were trying out the Chris NEO thing? Either way, good vid.
He did. I imagine since more people are watching his channel, it's a good time to redo older less viewed content.
He does say in the description he reworked it into the Irate Gamer format for this video
@@hamzahb3582 oooh see I didn't read the description. Fuck me right
Read the description. It says it was re-worked as an Irate Gamer episode.
Chris, I'm going through your channel and watching the videos I missed these past few years and let me tell you, your work brings back memories. I miss the old RUclips when people had to be creative instead of getting paychecks to fake their interests. Keep up the good work, man!
You summed it up better than I could. That's so true.
*Sigh* I'm gonna miss Mario 35. Kids can slaughter me on Fortnite, but Mario is my domain.
UPDATE *Tourettes Guy Voice*:
See you all in Pacman 99.
it was cool as fuck, damn shame they decided to pull the plug on it.
I miss Mario35 already also :(
I just do not understood their thinking behind shutting it down
Godd bye Pacman 99 now 😢

Never stop doing what you're doing, Chris! Been a huge fan since the beginning - even still own some of your old DVDs! Much love!
ah, this is an edited reupload. I thought it's a completely new video with the beginning part and the mention of the NES Super Mario Trilogy
1:25- I'd like to see Chris review Popeye some day. The arcade, the Intellevision port, the NES port, and even Popeye 2 for GameBoy. It's not a bad game, but it deserves a look. I'm kind of surprised he skipped it when talking about arcade to home console ports.

Great vídeo, man. Big fan from Portugal
Genuinely interesting video. Didn't expect much from the title, but that was a lot of fun.
Awesome video I had no idea there were so many hidden levels in the original Super Mario game 😳
Man it's crazy there was this many hidden levels for years and you were the first person to find them. CRAZY!
you can access those and more using tennis
Pitfall broke the mold first... but when this game came out ... everyone's mind was indeed blown
i think i enjoy your stuff more than AVGN these days. good stuff
I need those retro glasses 🕶️ 🔥
To give a technical explanation.

Well done Chris, top tier content
You’ve probably thought of it already but I think the 3 power ranger reviews could be edited to one and have the storyline removed.
So Happy Irate gamer is back in bizz!😇😇😇
Now get a game genie for the Game boy and do it to Super Mario deluxe.
Been a fan since I was a kid seeing the super Mario bros 2 video. Glad to see you uploading still Chris. 👍
I loved when you first did these Game Genie explorations a while back. Some really psychedelic stuff in these codes. Man I wish I could play these levels while listening to Jefferson Airplane and smoking weed 😃

Keep up the good work Chris! I love your channel and i really enjoy your paranormal stuff you do too
I had no idea you could do that! I still have an original copy of Super Mario and my Game Genie when I was a kid. I’m definitely trying this out.
I feel like if I had Super Mario Bros. as a kid, and saw the "trippy" levels like 9-1, I would have been amazed by them, and probably would have thought I was dreaming or something.

Wow, this is my favorite "súper Mario Bros" retrospective so far
I was wondering when you were bringing back those glasses! 😄😁❤️
Those glasses are sweet! 😂
This video is AWESOME!!! and fun to watch! Great job! Thanks for another great video!
i love that the C world is in fact ... (wait for it) a sea world!
LOVE YA SHOW MAN ,, ALWAYS HAVE AND AL;WAYS WILL ,I ENJOY YOU AND YOUR CONTENT CHRIS!
Many thanks!!
dig dug's backlash is VERY reasonable, you kill creatures for no reason
Love the redo flows better
9:37 You can do it too by putting SMB and then pulling it. Enter Tennis, and do a little gameplay. Pull it out and then enter SMB again to get World 9.
21:11 could you not jump to the top through the left side with pixel perfect wall jumps? :D
Lest we forget.
MARIO MADNESS/MARIO MANIA
This video is pretty awesome. Which episode is the one where king hippo and the eggplant wizard have the guns I like that scene. You make me laugh alot even when I'm stressed out your videos make me laugh. Best regards Nikita.K

17:07 Talks about the koopa troopa floating in midair, but doesn't seem surprised about how he fell though that platform.
I remember borrowing a bootleg NES cartridge from a classmate that had a lot of bootleg games and it included these levels too, I always was jealous and curious about them, that was back in the late 80s before Rom hacks was a thing, and even before I heard of Mario 2 Lost Levels.
Great video as usual! ^^ Keep up
Chris your legacy is already solidified as the GOAT ✊🏻
Now if I only had a shirt that says " I still call Bowser King Koopa "
Outstanding work as always mr irate
Bless my mother for being poor and some how getting SMB 3 early and Zelda 2 during the chip shortage.
Another great video, thanks ☺😊😀
To SMB2 USA's credit, it was developed by the Super Mario Bros. team w/ a Mario platformer mindset. Too, it may have been a very different series had that not come between 1 & 3.

Forgot about the lost levels
The amount of effort that went into this is impressive
This was really cool to watch. Also some of those jokes had me laugh from how silly they were.
One thing many people seem to overlook is that Doki Doki Panic was originally *going* to be a Mario game from the start. In fact, the original concept that the devs had in mind was to allow 2-player cooperative play where players could throw each other onto higher ledges-a design that wouldn’t be revisited until 2009 when New Super Mario Brothers was released on the Nintendo Wii.
You know what's weird?
Doki doki panic and the original Mario the lost levels were not only Japanese exclusive games but they were on the Famicom disk system
It wasn't just you...I had no idea what the fireworks were for, I just thought I did something badass.
P.S.
When my cousin got Super Mario Bros. 3 for his birthday, we didn't even touch the cake and never looked back. We'd sneak down and play it at 5 AM...the Game Genie was great as well.
Another banger of a video 👍
If you have the rom and a map editor change those levels to have a flag pole and castle to see the other worlds. Go through world 9 slowly and you should be able to finish it
I assume every one of these hidden levels has been recreated in Super Mario Maker 2 (minus random numbers on screen/instadeath/etc).
Always knew about the minus level, but these other ones were pretty cool to see too. I also liked the Metroid and Ducktales remixes.
glad to see you've calmed down some AVGN :)
World 1-1 is one of the most subtly effective intro levels in a game. The first screen alone introduces you to jumping and items blocks, all guided by the layout of the stage. The iconic music even gives a cue for when to jump on/over the goomba. Even better, the stage has plenty for a new player to go back and check out on subsequent playthroughs, a fact well-highlighted in this video.
How can you claim that this is in the Irate Gamer style when there's no Cousin Joey, no Ronnie the Skeleton, no Satan, not even an appearance from Evil Gamer during one of the multiple "Copycat Levels". **sigh**
In all seriousness though Chris, it's good to see you uploading at a fairly consistent rate again. We Irate Gamer fans need something to distract us from the nightmare that is the real world. Keep up the good work and stay Irate.
bruhify
Lets face it, gaming is ruined!
Holy shit I never knew about this! I know what I'm doing tonight after work. Awesome video Chris!😀
Seeing the score when killing an enemy was cool to see also on the NES, it gave you that arcade feeling.
i remember messing around with the GAME SHARK for ps1 and found a MP5 in RE2. it came in 2 parts like it would have toke up 2 slots like the m11 but i couldn't figure out how 2 piece it together.
I was thinking I had seen this before. Had to look at description to see it confirmed
awesome!
World D1 looks a lot like World 3-4 in layout.
This was a great idea for an episode! Would love to see more Genie tinkering if there's any opportunity to do so :)
Chris, this isn't the most exciting topic, because ultimately the best you can hope for is a somewhat different configuration of a handful of already used assets, hence not sure if this is the best idea to get more views with ;>>
sadly we wouldnt see this many secret levels in a Mario game again until World came out, which is a hell of long time if you was into secret levels.
after 2 years this is back :O
But can we get videos about other Mario games?
im more bothered the fact i watched this in parts over the weekend then BOOM, full upload today
This was a really cool video featuring Game Genie code manipulation. I would love to see other games that you can do this with. Thanks!
