Today's rappers lack the skill and poetical innovation compared to their predecessors. Hell, most of these so-called rappers can barely speak the english language clearly -- especially, these garbage ass trap rappers. I would say that the era of rap from 1986-90 was probably the strongest in terms of MCing and changing the way that future MCs rhymed and wrote. Even many B list rappers were very good back then. I don't think that any era since the aforementioned timeframe has produced such a deep pool of talent that has re-defined the artform of rhyming. People often cite Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole as the best in the game today, but if we transposed both of them to the year 1990, neither would be a top 10 rapper, and Kendrick probably wouldn't even be the best west coast MC -- not as long as Ice Cube is remembered.
