How so? What rapper do you know who sued another rapper for calling his/her name in a song?
If it ever reaches a point in which someone's name can't be mentioned in a song anymore, then hip hop is officially dead. Hip Hop is just about dead as it currently stands.

Grand Daddy IU states on another video of this song that he wrote it. And we all knew it back then that he wrote it. But it doesn't take away for what Shante was known for and that was freestyle battling. That is why she is ultimately a legend in hip hop. She freestyled her first album at 14 (on PopArt Records). And she killed plenty of male MC's on stage in front of thousands. She was the truth in that aspect.
Around this time the Juice Crew made a challenge to all of the female rappers back then to a freestyle battle. THey all refused. They may have been excellent writers but freestyle battle wise they weren't ready.

Lemme repost this for all of those who wanna claim that Remy Ma made a better diss ..or Lil Kim is better ...You have to compare the times ...We can say that emcees, today, are "better", but it's REALLY about them "adding" decor ..it's like, I can build a home, doing all of the hard work, and putting in all of the original furniture ..and someone can, later, come along and add some vases and plants ..Now, yeah, they've added some "improvements", but can we say that they are a better designer, overall? They didn't do the hard work of the original building and laying the foundation - they just added to a house that the O.G.s had, already, built (and by 1995, NOTHING MORE could "wow" me) ..So, comparatively speaking, this rules.

Excellent post. Honesty, I don't believe that the average emcee today is 'better' than the average emcee over the last 25-30 years. Today's rappers lack the skill and poetical innovation compared to their predecessors. Hell, most of these so-called rappers can barely speak the english language clearly -- especially, these garbage ass trap rappers.
I would say that the era of rap from 1986-90 was probably the strongest in terms of MCing and changing the way that future MCs rhymed and wrote. Even many B list rappers were very good back then. I don't think that any era since the aforementioned timeframe has produced such a deep pool of talent that has re-defined the artform of rhyming.
People often cite Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole as the best in the game today, but if we transposed both of them to the year 1990, neither would be a top 10 rapper, and Kendrick probably wouldn't even be the best west coast MC -- not as long as Ice Cube is remembered.

If you were fortunate enough to see Shante live in the 80's, you'd know that it didn't matter that IU wrote, Shante could definitely back it up. She destroyed so many rappers at her shows and battles in the streets. All off the top of her head. She offered to battle each one of these females she names on this record. None of them accepted.

FACTS. With that being said, this is probably the greatest diss record from a female emcee (and one of the best for any emcee) during her era. Shether hurt my feelings and I wasn't even a target. I actually felt bad for Nicki after that and I'm not a Nicki fan.

She was known for taking the mic and ripping niggas and nigettes to nothing off the top of her head. That's why is and always will be a legend in hip hop.
