The reason this film is so strong is there’s no over explaining context, the audience is forced to put the pieces together on their own. Also, the dialogue is like real life, especially in such a dense place like NY, nobody speaks one at a time when there’s 6+ people in a room. Both of these things made the story and the characters so believable, which is why a lot of casual movie goers had a tough time enjoying this film because it spits in the face of convention.
Im not a casual movie goer. I don't really watch movies anymore, casual would be generous. I used to watch too much tv, I'm not ignorant to a good film. I don't see what this movie did specifically that made it a good film, but I'm not denying the claim, just expressing my experience. It was done well Imo, I just don't see the point or understand the reason for the story.
Ever since watching the Safdie brother's previous feature, Good Time, I was eagerly awaiting their next feature. Good Time showed that they are masters of tension and momentum, with their impressive culmination of unique characters, editing, dialogue and of course musical scores, and Uncut Gems further cements that they are not only masters of tension, but they are truly two of the most exciting rising filmmakers right now. Also Adam Sandler should be nominated for an oscar for this amazing performance.
So interesting to hear about the intertwined genealogy of these different projects. Can't wait to see what's next for the Safdie Brothers. It's only uphill from here!
Yeah, I had never heard of other filmmakers taking characters from one screenplay and using them in another before. I'm looking forward to what they do next.
The safdie brothers are on a whole new level when it comes to filmmaking. I can’t wait for their upcoming projects. Uncut gems and good time are def in my top 15 fav films
“If you know your characters, the narrative will write itself” YUP! I’m not anyone big or special but I used to act a lot and I wrote a few scripts and this was the first most important thing I learned. These guys really got it man, love their work
If they made the movie back than the soundstrack wouldn't have been as good. Thank you Adam Sandler for saying no, and thank u Daniel Lopatin for making an amazing soundtrack.
I just want to say that the writers' versatility is incredible. They portrayed such a diverse mix of cultures, and did it so well. I am black and it's pretty dang impressive to see nuances of black culture and conversation so on point and so well done, especially by white/non-black directors. there's usually a sense of falseness , hints of a cultural disconnect in the dialogue but this film was handled that so perfectly bro. promise I don't mean to make this into a race thing lol , but it's really refreshing. Safdie brothers you guys did something great here! ! !
No, this is a legitimate observation and one I’m glad you noticed. In NYC, the differences between many of these cultures are vast. And to capture that on film makes the movie feel natural and real.
Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed watching the video, it would help a lot if you could share it! A lot of people have found my videos through Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook and it's the best way to share my videos with new people.
Great video man. This movie depicts the life with archetypical metaphors. It is our everyday struggle with life and people in a way. All that shouting and chaos... I felt so close to characthers and hated Howard's mistress. Thats an another thing! The loveless relationships based on wealth and power, the slut culture and bad women.. Toxic males and their ego's.. This movie literally depicts the biggest problems in 21st century. Safdie brothers literally find out and collected the main problems in the Western world, in a expressionistic way in this film. Instant classic. Also it was a true psychedelic joruney! The starting of this film and the visuals were verys pscyhedelic and karmic. I love the ending, how the camera gets inside to Howards body from that bullet hole.. it is so deep in many ways. Its like a everyday life of a modern man and we suck into it and get outside again with the camera. Just like life itself.. I can't believe they really did this film, its like winning that basketball game for Safdie brothers, they sure earned a lot of respect. It was also a metaphor too! But real successors keep themselves quiet like that basketball player, thats why Howard died at the end. Because he was feeding his ego too much maybe.. Wanted to share,i hope you felt these same things while watching man. This film was a real psyhedelic journey and had very humane emotions in it. And it shows the ultimate problems and duality of the life in 2 hours as we follow our main characthers last few days...
this was such a damn good film. Watched it last night and I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed it. Adam Sandler, who I'm not a huge fan of in general, was so good in it
I see Scorsese had his influence on this film, especially the ending..its very similar to to how DiCaprios' character got wacked in "the departed".and kevin spaceys' character in "american beauty". the shock value made it that much more poetic and meaningful..great project guys!keep it up!👍🏽
Alot of people talk about the best film or a life changing film but this is that it's not even next level its that beyond it makes you feel something that you've never felt before
These guys innately exude style. Uncut Gems was exponentially better than I expected it to be - and Good Time was excellent, as well. Both films are bulging with conflict, start to finish, and both Sandler and Pattinson absolutely thrived in that pressure cooker.
It just dropped on netflix. I saw it in the theater but I had to watch it again once I saw that they picked it up and I loved this movie even more the second time. Truly a masterpiece and definitely one of the best films of 2019. Thank you for your amazing style and craftsmanship Safdie bros!
Thanks for sharing/uploading. Watched the movie yesteraday, so its perfect to watch the ”behind the scenes" now a day after, when Ive digested the movie.
So if I understood correctly in Good Time in the scene with the four characters the safdie brothers allowed them to talk simultaneously rather than stopping and cutting to one person at a time?
I think it's about the effect it has. They used the same thing in Uncut Gems repeatedly and it amped up the tension and also gave the impression of chaos and things about to explode at any time
Behind the Curtain aaww it’s been my pleasure and opened my eyes to so much interesting info. Even tho he is no longer active, did you ever think on doing something on David Lynch? He does like to talk however he does not provide concrete deep evaluation 😜 I realize there are people who don’t ‘get him’ in the least and you may be one of them. His fans like me are more often than not somewhat perplexed by his work anyway😎
I would love to read the script for these movies. There's so much dialogue, I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was improv. Shit like, "you motherfucker open the door, open the fucking door what the fuck man" shit like that, but christ, when you have 4 characters talking at once, it's a nightmare to write that let alone perform it realistically. Really well done.
WOW, finally someone thinking the same way as I do. The thing which is triggering me the most is The Weeknd's hair style, I saw that it was producted in 2019 but has Iphone 4s,' VAIO screens and old Abel's hairstyle. I need answers lmao
True. This is one my favorite aspects of the film.I enjoyed the fact that Cashout the rapper who got famous that year played himself as his occupation he had before his big hit as well, The 2012 theme was very strange but intriguing nevertheless
Lil Ness It comes down to the Kevin Garnett stuff really. They would've had to find a time in KG's career that would've worked within the narrative. It probably would've been set current day if they used Joel Embiid.
I thought I hated this movie at first. Upon reflection I realized I just hated the main character and that the movie was actually pretty good in as much it made me hate him.
I really wanted to like this film, but I honestly had a hard time with it. Sandler did a fine job, and it was quite well written, but I dunno. Is it antiquated of me to feel the need to have at least one likable character in a film to enjoy it?
Never feel bad for not enjoying a movie. Likeability is certainly a dimensions some creators consider when shaping their characters but I feel like the Safdie Brothers don't. They're more interested in creating portraits of people who are compelling because of the unique way manifest their will on the world and the people around them - regardless of how moral or immoral it may be.
I wouldn't say antiquated, no. This is a film about the consequences of having a gambling addiction, so there are plenty of reasons to not like Howard. However, I don't think likability is the goal exactly. I think it's more about making the audience care about what the character is trying to do and why they need to do it. We have to have empathy, which means we have to view the character as a human. This is why Adam Sandler is great for this role. He makes Howard feel like a human trying to fix his wrongs, but struggling to do so. If Howard was being played by a cold calculated actor, I don't think the film would work as well. He would seem too much like a psychopath. That's my explanation, but don't feel bad if you don't like it. You don't need to like Uncut Gems to have good taste. These films can be difficult because Howard isn't a hero. He's not a role model. But Uncut Gems isn't trying to make him one either. It's a tragedy. Thanks for the continued support of my channel. Have a great day. :)
I must have missed something. Adam Sandler used his tolbooth willy voice and only the ending was good for me. I didn't dislike the movie but I was surprised everyone thought it was a masterpiece.
It’s a good thing it wasn’t made back then imagine this movie without Julia foxx or Sandler or even kg and then add to the fact good time probably doesn’t get made

Safdie Brothers and Safdie Brothers fans don't hate me or think I hate you (I did hate Uncut Gems). I'm just trying to start some honest movie discourse here. I KNOW I'm not the only one who thought this movie was a piece of shit outside of the cinematography and the acting. The screenplay was trash to me. I will die with this opinion so I don't really give a f***k if you disagree I liked Good Time except for the part where the white guy says the n-word and the part where Robert Pattinson has sex with an underaged Black teenager
Uncut Gems is masterpiece of a movie IMO but it only works if you like Howard, or if you want to see him fail. If you simply dislike seeing him onscreen and don't care what happens to him then this film just isn't for you, and is less about the writing and more about what your individual tastes are as a viewer. I can understand why people don't want to sit through this one but I love it.
It's important to see the full picture here, because of how long the Safdie's have been trying to get Uncut Gems made. Through that journey, the Safdie Brothers have further developed their filmmaking skills by making other films that have prepared them to make Uncut Gems what it finally manifested into.

To me its not a bad movie whatsoever, but to the people who are calling this movie a masterpiece, they are truly mistaken. I think the bar has been set so low as of late that when a decent movie comes by people automatically are enamored.

Good times = Trying to be "Snatch" but failed miserably.....
Heeeres Johnny It was nothing like Snatch. Not even close.
@@retired3897 exactly
You really need to watch more films.
Nothing like it
If a better actor played the main character this movie would’ve been better
Ragnar but Adam Sandler is fucking great in it
You trippin, Sandler did a great job
Armando De La Rosa he did a great job I’m just saying it could’ve been even better
like who then?
Zden Rises Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom hardy etc
To me its not a bad movie whatsoever, but to the people who are calling this movie a masterpiece, they are truly mistaken. I think the bar has been set so low as of late that when a decent movie comes by people automatically are enamored.
This movie was pure hype. Really not that good.
Here's a list of people who asked:
Movie was garbage
Terrible movie. All over the place. Corny acting. Sandler is fkn weak at playing any sort of tough guy. He should stick to bad comedies.
I bet your favorite movies are marvel movies
@@cesarsalinas-barajas3817 ya, no.
More like Shawshank, American History X, American Graffiti, Jackie Brown, The Game, Forrest Gump and stuff like that. Well written action/suspense and cult stoner comedies.
But keep pretending this was good and that Adam Sandler can act a role that isn't a goofball. Please.
@@notDonaldFagen hating adam doesn't make you cool.
fyhfb ass lmao this was one of the most pretentious things I’ve ever read
Ur all in this video and others explaining how ass this movie is, its not going to get you a job at blockbuster acting this way dawg, go watch your 90s movies if all ur gonna do is complain about this one u fucking boomer
