Again, thank you for this video of your second top. I love the idea of highlighting the hip measurement to help choosing the correct number. I’ll add that note inside my pattern book. Also, I like your small, to the point, direction sheet you made for yourself. Small steps keep you focused and give you permission to take a break when needed and not to get overwhelmed. Great job! I see what you mean with the gap in the front. But with the 2 small darts or gathers, that does solve the issue.
Thanks for watching this video. I do like writing down my 'instructions' as I feel then I'm not on my own making it 'willy nilly !! I will forget something I'm sure if I don't write it down. Thanks again and happy sewing 🧵😊
Laura with SewVeryEasy did a series I watched awhile back using The Golden Rule System which I believe you mentioned in your first part. I find it fascinating to watch so I love following along with you. I can’t wait for you to get into the newer fashions.
Thank you Cindy, I have watched Laura and she did it really well. I managed to cut out a pattern for some trousers the other day so now need to get cracking and make them up. I need some stretch fabric though as I think they are meant to be jeans. That's the one thing I miss, the fabric suggestions bit on a pattern! Thanks so much for watching and I will get that done soon 😊
Hi Carole, I've never seen the Lutterloh system before, its really interesting. The concept is a fun one to explore, I will enjoy watching your progression and how you find it. xx
Hello again! Yes it is an interesting system and concept. My Mum bought it in the 1970's and made a couple of things then felt guilty for 50 years for not using it hence I am trying it out! It's a learning curve though 🤣
I am really enjyoing this journey.. I have the system but have never found any decent tutorials or even clues on how to use it until you started showing us what you are doing.. thanks Carole, welldone.
Hello there. You are very kind. There are a couple of tutorials out there on RUclips that helped me a little but it really doesn't make much sense until you do it yourself 😂. The first top was more successful I think but mainly because of the style. I'm looking forward to making up one of the new patterns now 👏🏼. Go on, give yours a go!! 😊
Such a fascinating technique. I am enjoying watching you go through the process. I think you should wear the top. I like the idea of the tucks in the front neckline.
Hi Diane, thank you. I think the top needed something anyway to make it more interesting! It is a strange process but does seem to work. Glad you are enjoying it 😁
You may need the high bust measurement for shoulder/neck area. Other sewists who use this system and have full busts do this. Lutterloh used to use high bust and hip measurements, not sure when they switched to full bust measurement. Your idea for small pleats to fix the front gap is brilliant and flattering. I like the idea of the small back shoulder darts as I am slightly round shoulder. All in all...Great Job!
Thank you Lynn. If I'm doing a standard big 4 pattern I never have to adjust for anything but you could be right. At least if I do a more recent one I will notice a change. You have a good knowledge of Lutterloh, have you used it often? I was really unsure of those back darts but it stopped it gaping there so I may adopt that in future! Thanks again 😊
@@socarole66 I've not used this system but am very interested in it so have watched several videos. I use the high bust measurement choosing my size with the Big 4. I'm very narrow through my shoulders with a 'C' cup. I think the 'rule' is 4" (10 cm) difference. Just thought this might work for you to get a better fit through the neck area. Of course, it may just be that particular pattern that is a bit wide. I'm hoping this system is in my future!
@@lynnries7729 thank you. I've not even considered the difference before so I'm going to do the measurements as you said. I just normally guess my size and go with it 🤣. That could definitely be my problem with having narrow shoulders. Thanks 😊
I do this! Works brilliantly. Upper bust for measurements from shoulder to mid armscye, full bust from there to waist. I have exactly the same gaping on the neck if not.
I’m getting the concept now. This blouse Is cute but I think a couple of pleats in the front neckLine is what I would also try. Looking forward to seeing you do the dress. This is fun.
Thank you Annette. I think a lot of people have bought it over the years but not really used it. It does need perseverance and also lots of sewing knowledge! That's my downfall as I just want instructions 🤣.
Hi Lorraine! Interesting is definitely the word and crazy to think it's been going since the 30's!! 🤣. It's got almost sort of addictive 😁🧵. Thanks for your comment. X
Hi Carole! You top is lovely and you have the 'gappy' neck problem just like me. I solved it by taking my upper bust measurement rather than full bust for the shoulder area.🌷
Hi there, thank you so much for your comment. The last couple of makes that I have made from this system I have done exactly that, use the upper bust measurement and that has definitely helped. Thank you for suggesting it. 😊🧵

Oh, and it’s definitely not for me 🙈I’m not even a fan of pdf patterns and just as soon be a spectator. Kudos to you though for sticking it out🙌
Glad someone noticed the lovely, smooth paper!! The pleats are definitely needed to jazz it up a bit. Going forward I can see me making the odd thing but oh, opening a pattern envelope is so much easier 😂. You have to be so exact 😫. Still I think the dress will be easier 🤞🏼. Thanks for bearing with me on the rocky road of Lutterloh 😊
Well, I think it's just amazing how you make your own pattern plotting out your measurements using that system. I agree with you about the top you just made ... I would put little pleats or gatherings along the front neckline area to tighten it up a bit. I think the dress you're going to work on next is very nice; that's my style of dress for sure! Have a great week!!
Hi Deb, yes little pleats will be going in. I knew it wouldn't be the most interesting top but I was doing it for the process really. So excited to start on that dress though as I can see that being very wearable 👏🏼. Hope your week is going well 😁
Hi Carole, I find it interesting. I definitely think that it would improve your skills as you are working through the system. Personally, it seems like more work than I am willing to go through unless they had THE perfect pattern that I wanted. I enjoy watching you do all the work though… 😏

The comment about high bust measurement was really interesting. I never would have come up with that, though that's how I have to choose my size for big 4 patterns. The thing that I wonder about is what edge of the measuring tape to use when marking the dots. If you're always using the right edge of the tape, it seems to me that the dots on the left side of the pattern will be off (smaller?) by the width of the tape measure. Does that make sense? Hi there. Your message definitely got me intrigued and I went back and watched Frank doing his video. (I found out he is the same age as me🤣😂). He measures across the full bust so I need to check on that when they changed from high bust and see what I should be doing but having said that, it did fit me across the bust well. Re the tape, really good thought so I looked into that as well. You need to use the left side of the tape next to the holes because that is how it's lined up along the line. If it was the other side then it wouldn't match the line. Also if you covered over the line to use the right side of the tape the numbers wouldn't show. Is this making any sense 😳🤪!! I think having done two patterns now I must have kind of got the hang of it but I need to take more care with measuring clearly. I'd love to hear how you get on 😁. It wasn't cheap though at £15, mind you I have bought the Burda stuff before and that wasn't cheap either! Thanks for watching this series of struggles 😊
I have the same problem with the upper chest being too wide. Measure your upper chest from under your arms then over and above the bust and then across the back. There are lots of photos on the net. Use that measurement instead of the full bust. Then use your full bust measurement from about where the sleeve notch would be. Some don't change to the full bust measurement until the underarm area. Paper fit yourself or make a muslin. Most likely you will will need to make the same adjustment with most patterns.
Thank you Bonni for those suggestions. It's funny really, Lutterloh system prides itself on using only 2 measurements for a perfect fit and that's what I was testing really. Maybe it doesn't suit all and some people do have to tweak the patterns. I will definitely give that a go next time as it was just so big on me and it's not the first time that has been suggested for me. I am enjoying using the system though and love the plotting part! Thanks again for your help 😊
Hey carole i noticed you did something wrong you marked a bust measurement as a hip measurement hun x it was 15 everything on or above the waist ya use BM and everything below is HM ....15 was on the waist measurement not below x

I will definitely give that a go next time as it was just so big on me and it's not the first time that has been suggested for me. I am enjoying using the system though and love the plotting part! Thanks again for your help 😊
They sell them on sewing gem uk, they buy in bulk for her Carole .... i've been speaking to her because i wanted some more rulers lol
Thanks for your comment and spotting that. I've made a few more since then and have improved greatly! 🧵
Thanks for that, I'll pass that information along on my next video. 🧵😊
Hey carole i noticed you did something wrong you marked a bust measurement as a hip measurement hun x it was 15 everything on or above the waist ya use BM and everything below is HM ....15 was on the waist measurement not below x
V=back of the sleeve
Initially when I read this I panicked but I have just checked the instructions and mine say V =sleeve front. It maybe that they have changed this in further editions. Thank you so much for watching though and taking the time to comment. 😊
