    Nice talk but it would be great to actually see this going on. Actually seeing the dog herding the sheep with a guard dog in them.....

    Where are herding dog when they are not herding? Do you ever leave herding dogs with livestock guardian dog to keep goats together? My goats seem to divide into different herds making in difficult for them to protect the divided herds. I am considering multiple guard dogs and one border collie herding dog, will that work? I

    Do you know if multiple herding dogs can work together?

      Yes it’s done quite regularly

      I have an Australian cattle dog and a German shepherd that work our livestock together. It's truly amazing to watch how the dogs communicate and anticipate one another. With our livestock pretty broken-in and my dogs very familiar with the program, I often feel pretty unnecessary during pasture rotations. If I could teach the dogs to open and close the gates, I think they'd probably leave me at the house.

    Why can't you train the guard dogs NOT to attack herding dogs? It would seem that the herding dog should be protected. If guard dogs attack, don't they automatically make herding dogs less effective until they stop doing the job out of fear? It just seems like an incredibly biased set up where you are choosing guard dogs over the herding dogs. (Sorry if these are stupid questions. I don't know anything about working dogs!)

      The entire point is with proper introductions you can work herding dogs around guardian dogs. One thing you don’t want are immature guardian dogs emulating the behavior of the herding dogs ( ie chasing livestock). It’s just a balance of reading the individual dogs.

      @@369ranch Ah, yes; thanks for the insight. I wasn't carefully listening to the video. I think what you guys do is facinating. You're constantly monitoring the ecosystem so it works like clockwork. Last question: Are herding dogs faster than guardian dogs? Could they outrun them?

    • @369ranch
      @369ranch  Год назад

      @@msr6270 typically they are but Anatolians can run very fast when they want to.

    I enjoy your material but you should put the sheep and dogs as the primary focus of your video. Its hard to watch someone talk directly into the camera.

      Well I was actually thinking of trying a few videos that way and see the response.
