  • As an OTR (Over the Road) truck driver, there are high (hidden) costs to be paid, which some truckers who are interested in this type of truck driving job may not be aware of.
    1. Long hours. Long unpaid hours, if on a mileage rate pay system.
    2. Out of pocket expenses you'll incur when away from home. This cuts into your bottom line net pay.
    3. Stress + emotional strain being away from home, often for long periods of time. You as a professional driver will pay the price and so will your family/partner.
    4. Lots of sitting. Challenging to stay healthy.
    5. Loneliness and depression.
There are more costs, but these are the 5 main costs of an over the road truck driving career.
Be sure to understand what this lifestyle is all about before getting into it.

Let me just comment for myself. I’m in my forties, OTR truck driver. On a positive note, I save almost all of my income. I have no mortgage, no rent, SINGLE, no needy people in my life! I see the country, and sleeping in the truck is just like camping. I digress!

I love trucking, take home over 1000 per week & all I gotta do is drive 😂 play video games & watch tv on my down time. Fridge, microwave, laptop. I listen to music or audiobook while driving. And I get exercise by walking around my truck 32 times, which is 1 mile. Do it every day & make sure to take a quick stretch & walk break every 3 to 4 hours. All depends how you all look at it..

D Day was talking to someone about that just the other day that asked me what OTR was like. Best way I could describe it was “imagine you are starting a road trip from your local gas station, drive 5 hours east then turn around and drive 5 hours back, stay at the gas station. As soon as you get back to the gas station I want you to go inside and start a 1 hour argument with the first employee you find. Go back to your vehicle and try to sleep, 6 hours later wake up and go in the gas station again. Start another 1 hour argument with whoever you see, then do the road trip again.” Repeat until you die

I’ve been driving for 24 years so I’m starting to get the hang of it. I lost 50 pounds since January with a low carb, high fat keto diet. The last time I had a sit down meal in a truck stop was last Thanksgiving. I bring my own food that I got from grocery stores or Walmart. I go for walks as often as I can. I feel better now than I have in years.

That's my strategy too and u get more energy .done it before i started trucking now that I'm a truck driver eating less carbs high protein high fat keeps u in shape and focused. Also jumping rope come in handy cause u could do that anywhere u go and just few minutes help.i have like a small kitchen in my truck truck stops are not taking my money too expensive and food is unhealthy. Even coffee i make it un my truck.gd luck .

Yeah. Its really not that expensive to live over the road. All it takes is a decent cooler that can hold ice for a few days, and a walmart to fill the cooler up. The keto lifestyle is good, but i always get bored of it after a few weeks. I mostly eat light while im on the road. But one thing is for sure. It beats the truck stop food anyday

The per diem was also taken away from company drivers, so they can’t write off anything on their taxes. Total BS, in my opinion. Driving OTR costs a driver money, even if they work for someone else. The item that costs $1 at Walmart will cost $2.50 at a truck stop.

I am an over the road truck driver and I love my job. I am not rich by any means. But, I am doing much better now than I was working in a powdered metal factory at home in Pennsylvania. I also don't have a family. No wife. No kids. I never wanted a family of my own. I don't spend much time sitting around waiting for the next load. I keep moving forward pretty steadily. I am 39 years old now so maybe in ten years from now, I would feel differently. But, I love being over the road. Because I am single, I wouldn't know what to do with my time if I was home every night. Someone has to bring the goods across the country otherwise they wouldn't get there. I don't mind being one of the people bringing it in.

    But, things do change.

Just retired from OTR. 3.5 years was enough for me. Dealt with the sedentary element by getting out first thing in the morning and exercising. Push ups, squats, body weight movements. Even if the weather didn’t permit, I’d do something. The bunk can be used for pull ups. Diet was all prep ahead of time. Ice less cooler and fridge was stocked with good sources of protein, carbs, fats. Veggies, little bits of fruit. Microwave was my go to for cooking. Good luck 👍

Right on all points.. and add this also. After 29 yrs all OTR, my body is worn out. 3 bad discs in my back, 90% cartilage worn in my left hip and arthritis in both knees.. the bumps, the long hours in the seat, the climbing up and down into the tractor and trlr... it has absolutely destroyed my body and we don’t get paid for those problems either.

I got caught in a snow situation and had to buy chains at the Loves I was parked at on I-5 near Albany Oregon. Bought the chains but have become so weak I couldnt carry them across the parking lot! So set them down and had to go get the truck! That's also a price you pay as an otr trucker. Little or no exercise! 😣

Awesome story. Sounds like you and the lettuce king got the easy way out, I don’t think anybody likes chaining the truck tires. And thank you for your input on over the road problems, very true, we may know how it is out here from experience but it is still nice to hear somebody acknowledge it.

I hear a lot of complaining about Trucking but for me it’s been a breeze, I think people should stop driving for mega carriers and find small foreign company’s if you want to make the money. I’m 24 i have no kids I drive about 3,800-4,500 miles a week at .60 cents a miles. (Crafty Log books never failed a Log book inspection) I’m a 1099 S Corp and pay about 3K a year in taxes. I’ve been on the road for 1.5 years and I’m working on my second investment property right now and will buy a 3rd as soon I finish this deal. Trucking is whatever you make it.

Your basically saying no one should be an over the road driver. How would stuff get transported? If there was a 9-5 available in our home towns that would full fill our financial needs, don't you think we would take it? No one likes being out here but it needs to be done and it's the only thing we can do.

While mostly true, I do find issues with this video.
I am a widower with grown kids, so family life is way different than someone with a family. I don't mind/care if I spend weeks on end on the road, and neither does the rest of my family. And even if one has a family - there are certain things one can do to cut costs. Like getting a microwave, coffee pot, refrigerator\ etc for the truck. If one goes shopping at a Walmart type store, when they have home time, or sometimes even in between - you're costs are going to be CHEAPER than a truck stop!. And final hint ..... You don't have to trip plan for truck stops for your end of day. Most States have these lil nice places called ..... Rest Areas! :)

Little America sucks. Highest fuel price in the state, their shop is a joke. They took out the restaurant so now all they have is the deli which aint horrible but not great either. Gotta ask for a Danm coffee cup at the fuel desk after waiting in line. Use to be a decent place but it's gone to shit over the last 7 or 8 years.

I used to have to chain quite frequently in that stretch of I-80 he talked about in the video. It always amazes me how many people would rather lose a day or two of work then to throw chains on their truck for a couple hours.

First time I ever had the chain what's on Donner Pass I was driving with England at the time which means I luckily had a teammate to help to help me out unfortunately he was less experienced then I was, so it was a first for us both ran uphill for about 20 miles before yank them off. I feel with the lettuce canes sentiments exactly.

Just like my trainer taught me, "If it's bad enough to chain, you don't need to be out there." Or as another friend taught me, "When in doubt, chicken out." Beats the hell out of getting yourself or someone else killed. I told someone once, "Yeah, I may be a chickenshit, but I'm a *LIVE* chickenshit. And I'll be a live one, tomorrow, the next day, and the one after that." Remember this, folks, no load is hot enough to be worth cooling off in a ditch or on your side. Helena pinned me down in West Fernley for five days because CalTrans couldn't make up their mind about Donner Pass. R2, MAX, NO CHAINS, CLOSED, MAX, all in the course of about five to ten minutes when I woke up one of those days. After about 30 minutes of this on-again-off-again, I said to hell with it and went back in the sleeper.

You’re right...drivers miss out on a lot. If you can have your spouse or friend drive with you, or team drive, that adds a lot to the road trip. It’s hard enough on your relationships and I’ve known a few drivers that were fortunate enough to have their spouse as co drivers...what a sweet deal!

All very true and a reality. For me eating is the biggest challenge OTR. I am a diabetic and live diet controlled. I have to eat pretty much a hardcore Keto diet even watching the vegetables I eat because things like corn and carrots have too much sugar in them. I meal prep before heading out but can only take 10-14 days worth of food with me then have to start buying. Really hard not eating any processed foods when you are hungry and or in a hurry.

Look hard enough you get a good deal. But......the stuff is super unhealthy. I used to get pizza and chicken. But it's an unhealthy diet. Once in a while I would get coffee. But I find it cheaper to just get a cup, rinse it everyday, and use a bunch of tea that costs like $3 and will last for at least 3 to for weeks, depending on how many cups you drink.
