SERIES SUMMARY
The Alpha Jay Show reviews animation episodes, animated TV movies, cartoons, and other things as a main series. I have reviewed many things from Fairly Oddparents to SpongeBob to Teen Titans Go to The Amazing World Of Gumball and many more. Expect a fair, open-minded and non-pandering review of whatever episode I use. Bear in mind while I do use copyrighted material, it is highly likely that my content falls under the legal defense of fair use.

SHOW SUMMARY
A square yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, in the city of Bikini Bottom on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. During his time off, SpongeBob has a knack for attracting trouble with his starfish best friend, Patrick. Arrogant octopus Squidward Tentacles, SpongeBob's neighbor, dislikes SpongeBob because of his childlike behavior.
No, this animated series is not about anthropomorphic chewing gum, it's about a young cat named Gumball Watterson. Gumball has a penchant for getting into trouble, often resulting from schemes he comes up with, but he never seems to learn his lesson. Gumball's best friend is a fish named Darwin, who used to be the family pet until he grew legs and became part of the family. Gumball resents his younger sister, Anais, because she is the smartest member of the family. Gumball's mother is the breadwinner in the family, working long hours at the rainbow factory, and his father stays at home watching TV and playing video games.

You know from the START you have to give it to Gumball. They did it better, and what I can relate to. Just accept it until the darkness takes over. And at the end, it turns out he imagined everything and his family was there the entire time. Spongebob just had everyone leave but spongebob for a day like it's a holiday to get away from one person without warning. That was a dick move. And when both shows had the main character acted out the roles of their friends and family, Spongebob dragged it on to 1/4th of the episode! Gumball kept it swift to focus on to other things. Gumball never failed to make me laugh on ANY of their episodes. Even the downer. The jokes were funny, but quick. Spondgebob's version of the darkness is when Spongebob was friends with a boat. A car. Then the boat thinks that spongebob is double crossing him. And Spongebob quickly gains a fear of automobiles. When finally, the bus containing everyone in the bikini bottom came back from that very day. I just find episode tropes like this is supposed to be a character vs self conflict. I struggle to find that kind of conflict in Spongebob's episode. Where I can clearly see that in Gumball's episode. He's fighting his inner demon, and the darkness is a figment of his mind.
+1223333nbahal Thank you for commenting. ^^ I really like the insight with this comment.
gumball wins
#TeamGumball
I have to admit with Gumball does give a great twist but with SpongeBob everyone was actually gone. SpongeBob and Gumball are actually the same thing in the episode because they are both imitating the people who they live with or know. My opinion is i will always stick to it is that I like SpongeBob more than anything.
How is it a dick move to abandon a sociopathic lunatic?
I just realized something; when "Boatie" is discovered to be watching Spongebob he sounds like a partner in an abusive relationship
+Princess Spirit Quartz You're probably right.
Thank you for commenting. :D
Alpha Jay Show no problem :)
Princess Spirit Quartz damn
Definitely Gumball, and while Spongebob did it first, I think Gumball handled the situation much better, especially with the ending since the Spongebob one just felt a bit mean-spirited while the Gumball one was a lot more fun and enjoyable.
Masterge77 I can agree with that tbh. "Gone" was really something. It didnt feel very child like for a kid's cartoon and took a way darker tone, while "The Downer" may be dark, but was still fitting enough to be fun to watch.
Imagine using "mean-spirited" as an argument
@@thatthinginyoureye it’s a valid point. Why would I want to watch an ending where the main character is punished for no reason? It’s mean spirited and not fun to watch
@@zf10studios52 Because it's a cartoon. Cartoons don't need some overly long, sappy explanation on why a character should be "punished". This isn't The Loud House after all.
@@thatthinginyoureye just because its a cartoon isnt an excuse for bad writing. Doesn't have to be "sappy" just be adequate
When you listen closely to Gumball's impressions of his family, you could hear a little bit of his voice. Either his voice actor is _that_ good at impressions, or the other voice actors are _that_ good at imitating Gumball's voice. If it's the former, _that's impressive,_ especially for a kid! They could've just -lazily- comedically have the other voice actors voice Gumball's impressions, as if he's supposed to be _that_ good.
That is the same cheap joke that The Fairly OddParents used for Timmy imitating Wanda's voice in Hassle in the Castle. What about Gone? SpongeBob did a much better job at imitating voices in Mimic Madness than he did for the exact same characters in Gone. April 12, 2020, 5:53pm
Adam Kalb Exactly!
@@adampkalb was years later...?
@@PxndaCakes Well, yes. I guess Tom Kenny got better at impersonating other characters' voices by that time. No, I do not think the other voice actors should have voiced Gumball's impressions like he is that good because...that would be cheating. August 13, 2020, 5:06pm
Or; here me out, maybe they played both of them talking at the same time
I think they we’re both equally good but, I noticed that in spongebob the boat might not even be alive. Spongebob is and extrovert so he gets his energy from other people. An not being around people for even a couple of days can really damage your psyche. I think the whole boat thing was spongebob becoming so desperate for human contact that he personifies a boat to become his friend. The boat really isn’t talking to spongebob, spongebob is making the boat make noises and move for the illusion that the boat has come to life.
Yep. Ik from personal experience. (Extrovert during quarantine)
I think Gumball did it better. Their jokes were funny, but they kept them quick so they wouldn't be drawn out and lose their humor. It had a pretty good moral at the end(don't let a bad mood control you). And we got a funny twist at the end of the episode that doesn't make you feel bad for the character *too* much. Where as in spongebob, you spend half the episode feeling sorry for the guy.
But this is just my opinion
+RAINBOW PICKLES Yeah. I can agree. SpongeBob takes the concept more realistically.
The problem with Spongebob is that the episode was just full of time wasting filler, with the boat sub-plot being just unnecessary. On top of that, the ending and explanation of the disappearance was just awful. Gumball kept the story and comedy rolling and didn't feel NEARLY as dragged out. Gumball also kept his character and would react to a situation like this in a way that most kids his age would. Gumball also felt like true effort and good writing were included in the story, while spongebob felt lazy and mediocre.
SpongeBob procrastination vs gumball the procrastinators
gumball
Gumball
It wins because of the Terminator reference
They were both great, but you can't beat Gumball
Nothing beats GUMBALL
SpongeBob automatically wins. Period.
And I was just watching The Downer.
I think The Amazing World of Gumball is literally the best thing ever. It just does everything perfectly.
Sorry, but I have to address a glaring detail. Regular show is about as serious as spongebob, where even a synopsis of most of their plots is funny
"Rigby switched fortune cookies with Benson, swapping their luck, but he must reverse it before the park is consumed by a wizard"
"Rigby gets an earworm, so they many things to try to get it out, until the song physically manifests into a mix tape, where they need to make a song eveeven catchier to beat it"
Regular Show is more serious and funnier than Sponge-bob.It's an action dramedy.
"they need to make a song even catchier to beat it"? I guess they ripped the plot off indirectly from Spongebob or vice-versa. I don't recall if that Earworm episode came from the 10's without Googling it.
its from 2009
Was the Gumball episode an allegory for depression? Or am I trippin?
+I didn't know almonds had titties. Darkness? Solitude? Possibly.
I heard from Ben Bocquelet that the original draft for the episode was way too dark.
Yes that is what I got from it.
First of all i love rhis concept, i feel like the comedic side TAWOG handled the entire thing better, especially the fact that he created his problem. But i did really enjoy how dramatically handled spongebobs downward spiral into madness. it gave a few pretty good laughs
+TheOneTrueOtaku Don't get me wrong, Gone handled it well for being so dramatic. It's just that since its Spongebob, it has the reputation for being the exact opposite, which means it would lose that power then if it was Avatar or Regular Show or Adventure Time.
Alpha Jay Show fair enough
I really like how Gumball’s voice actor managed to imitate both his mom and Anaïse to a very near point while still sounding like Gumball imitating his own family members!
Mimic Madness and The Downer are both overrated
Which episode did the "Gone" aspect better: Spongebob or Gumball?
+Alpha Jay Show Gumball!
Shadow Garth the Time Razor
Nice!
The Gumball one (The Downer) seems interesting and Gone was...okay.
Gumball machine.
Overall Gumball was more entertaining to watch but the only thing I thought conceptually was done better was Spongebob feeling stalked by an inanimate object. I just feel like its more realistic a concept for the theme of the episode. Gumball just handles the reaction to the situation much better and more thoroughly than just Spongebob shouting and taking at least 5 minutes to realize nobody is there, if nobody is outside like they usually are. Most shows that do this plot seem to handle it better, but the ending where everyone just left because of how much they hated Spongebob was pretty bad.
I mean the older seasons implied that they didn't like him but in a subtle sarcastic way, but this episode seemed again very mean spirited. Like general family guy. It seemed like a torture porn of spongebob's mental state rather than his usual naivety like done in Bubble Buddy or Rock Bottom. When everyone ignores Cartman in South Park its at least justified why they would want to get away from him. They just hate spongebob for who he just is.
Gumball is personally a bit better than spongebob in terms of show. But I wonder who would Win in a FIGHT because both are technically reality warpers who are except to the laws of physics and are pretty much capable of changing anything whenever they want.
+Ant Ramos Depends on if SpongeBob feels pain.
He feels pain when the plot demands it and Gumball feels it whenever he feels like it(Sometimes)
Ant Ramos Gumball has went through some fights before, mostly with Rob. SpongeBob is usually scared of fights.
-GDXdominator- Geo No but SPONGEBOB has a magic page honestly they can't kill each other well Gumball maybe not Spongebob.
I still there Uncle Grandpa can bet both of these. I mean if you actually think about it Uncle Grandpa breaks reality some much that it kind of makes him scary.
I remember the episode Gone and it scared the heck out of me as a kid
+Munib Messi How come?
Alpha Jay Show Spongebob going crazy and the car in the background staring at him, and that dark music hit me hard-
Oh and krabby patty Patric was scary as heck
Same it gave me an uneasy feeling, when he said "we can't talk, he's watching." And the creepy music played I got freaked out
NimmerNomma lol yeah
Fr, the nightmares... Lol 😅
Gone is Creepy, but in a mental way. The episode should be talked about for how much more realistic take on the “Alone” episode. The way it makes a boat terrifying is because YOU start to think it had something to do with the disappearance of the characters. The episode isn’t bad. It’s not great either. It’s just a “Normal” episode. (Because it’s paired with Not Normal, Ha)
Gumball And SpongeBob Both Really Truly Compare. :P
Thanks for the comment. I agree
The Gumball episode should've been called "The Darkness"
Gumball wins in my opinion.
+TheGreatServer Nice!
Thank you for commenting.
Two of these episodes reminds me of the south park episode when everybody at school pretend that carman is that there and have carman to believe that he died but try to redeemed himself by being nice with a little help from butters
Dajuire Matthews *carTman
The Spongebob one scared me a little bit. Before that episode even came out, I had some dreams like that.
They don't care about SB?
Cries
Gumball wins, by a long shot
I hope I structured this well. I did try to organize this by sections of the cartoon. If you could, please let me know how I did, if there were any confusing parts and any other shows you'd like to see on Versus.
What about spongebob vs unikitty? I've seen similarities between the two shows.
Alpha Jay Show hey could you do an episode about the Powerpuff Girls reboot episode Clawdad VS the Craig Of The Creek episode Big Pinchy.
Hm... LazyTown also did this concept too with Robbie Rotten, The First Day of Summer and that episode also did it a bit differently. LazyTown's not a cartoon, mind you but it's pretty close to one.
I never thought about how much an episode could do with that concept...
+A Blob The ice cream scene is a classic.
"I'd like an ice cream about... THIS HIGH!"
Gone used to scare the shit out of me lol. Not a very funny episode, I just remember paranoia and sadness. i could literally relate to spongebob when people were saying they wanted to get away with him
but I love both these shows to death lol. I’d say gumball probably did it better
Gumball is better
3:24 when half the class is absent and you count the empty desks
I think both did it really well in diffrent ways. Gumball made it comedic while Spongebob made it scarier and weirder, like spongebob always does
Gumball hits me comedically but SpongeBob hits me emotionally and mentally.
The music was the best part! Especially the ending where he gets so pissed off by his own song!!
Agreed. Have you seen the Japanese version of the song? It's funny & he has the voice of Naruto.
ruclips.net/video/PlqBt__7KZM/видео.html
You know the episode did remind me of spongebob glad to know someone else remembered
Please do more gumball. That has to be my new favorite show
@SeaLand Container well that just sounds like your being a shit bag
I think that Gone is pretty good. I honestly prefer comedy, but i enjoyed the dark humor in Gone a lot. Spongebob, having been in psychological tormet for days, gives a uniqye contrast from his usual upbeat personality that i find very believable. As much as i dislike seasons 5-8 for being too varied in quality, i do appreciate the different story styles they had, instead of it just being comedy. Even the worst episodes are very unique in concept and story structure and i enjoy seeing if the episodes do well.
As for the Gumball episode, i havent seen it yet. Gumball usually has very good stories but just doesnt feel as varied as Spongebob. Gumball wont have musical episodes, Westerns, Medieval episodes, but Gumball is much better than Spongebob in what Gumball does. Comedy and horror are Gumball's strong areas, and i love both shows for giving me something different.
Gumball is overall better though. At least it doesnt have Little Yellow Book or Stuck in the Wringer.
Joseph France
It has the Worst though. It's all down to opinion though. I personally prefer Spongebob, it's peak is much higher than Gumball's peak and it's lowest was lower than Gumball's lowest. I don't think any Gumball episode is as good as say Band Geeks, Mimic Madness, Chocolate with Nuts, Pizza Delivery, Krusty Tower and such. But you're right, Gumball has no episode as bad as One Coarse Meal, Stuck in the Wringer and Demolition Doofus.
Bruh gumball have musical et medieval episodes
I love Spongebob, but I'm gonna have to give it to gumball. I loved this episode so much. The Amazing World of Gumball is another one of my favorite shows.
Gumball's dark predicted pibby's glitch of darkness
It was scary to see Gumball get nearly psychotic at the end when the black smoke was engulfing him. This is one of those instances where he really needs to see a psychiatrist.
Gumball wins.
Episodes like Gone make me wonder why I liked season 5-8 as a kid. Now I can't even look at an episode because they're so fucking garbage and pad out so much. Millions of dollars per episode, spent on either exposition or nothing fucking happening. Made even more annoying with the fact that most episodes are only 11 minutes long.
Mimick Madness is what Gone should have been
Nice review in my opinion
+TheUndeadGamer Thank you so much!
When you showed clips from both episodes back to back, it made me realize just how _awful_ the pacing is in Gone. It's incredibly slow and tedious. Even Spongebob turning himself into the other characters is done in a slow and tedious way.
SMG4 should’ve taken notes from this video, as he pretty much recreated Gone but with Mario.
At least there’s a reason all his friends abandoned him besides just being annoying, (He ruined their pizza while drunk), but it still feels like disproportionate retribution, considering how insane he went.
Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.
Not gonna lie The Downer is one of my favorite episodes in the show
Why doesn't spongebob clone himself
Gumball Wins!!!😀
at least in Gumball nobody left him because he was annoying.
Amazing World of Gumball won!
+Sonimations Nice!
@Cwispy Face -_-
I know I’m 5 years late, but The Downer was a MUCH better episode, and it’s not even a contest. Gone has the WORST ENDING in Spongebob, period. Probably one of the most mean-spirited things I have ever seen in a cartoon.
It’s funny
The whole Gumborg The Destroyer bit was great.
What about SpongeBob echoing "Go....go.....go"?
Gumball was actually rewatchable
That's pretty scary if you think about it. Imagine you woke up one day and you find out that everyone is gone and you're the only person in the area
Spongebob - The Abrasive Side vs Tawog - The Flower
The downer=pibby gumball episode
An interesting thing I remember is that I once saw the episode on tv and they cut out the part where it was revealed that Gumball touched Richard's ... chest area
I liked The Downer from The Amazing World of Gumball better
I’ve been thinking about just how mean the ending of Gone really is. Imagine being so hated that every single person in the city jumps at the opportunity to spend just 1 day away from you. Not to mention that they milk ‘national no SpongeBob day’ for weeks. Not even Patrick, his best friend, sticks up for him, nor does he apologise upon return. I get SpongeBob can be kind of annoying, but everyone in bikini bottom is portrayed as cruel and uncaring in this episode, even those who claim to be his friends. What reason would Mr Krabs, Sandy or Patrick have to go along with this, let alone be so enthusiastic about it? There is no suitable retribution for everyone acting this way either, only Patrick gets punished.
Ya fucking kidding me? Gumball is way better that Spongebob, we don't need this fucking discussion
+EYTPS Seems like you have a bias.
gumball wins!
Thank you for commenting
3:22 But did you know they were gone?
So with spongebob having problems with Boatie, doesn't seem to me as a soap opera. Yes, it's dramatic, but it's far from the soap opera aspect based on the conflict and overall tone of the episode.
So your saying is that The Downer wins because it was realistic
+Joshua Hecht I'm saying The Downer wins because it stays closer to how a Gumball show would be, instead of a soap opera.
Oh
+Joshua Hecht Also, it didn't have such a mean spirited ending.
Zero The Bloodedge
What's brutally honest to one could be considered mean to another. (In my opinion)
UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT I liked gone.
+Jaded{151} Unpopular opinions are welcome.
Alpha Jay Show Thanks.
I watched the Downer when I was like, pretty young, and damn it was horrifying.
*D A R K N E S S*
Kingdom Hearts?
SpongeBob’s better SpongeBob when’s
I don't think I hear many positives about Gone, most people see it as really creepy for Spongebob's character, and very unsettling to see a character slowly delve deeper and deeper into madness. Also, keep in mind, Spongebob is a comedy, so I don't think they did scenes like the patty Patrick to be dramatic, but funny, but it just comes off as uncomfortable.
Endershock1678
That's what I like about it. That's what I highly appreciate about Spongebob. It experiments and does different things. I love that. It doesn't stick to the same formula
12:14 that face 😂
The gumball episode was amazing the SpongeBob episode was a meh
7:44 that moment when you finally get that one queen song
i can smell a south park vs family guy lmao
Possibly :D
Gumball did
Texas spirit thanks Texas ball
Gumball wins
2:56 me flush atlas superMario and ppg fan kktk UwU Natalie show mr pingutastic Ronnie backyardaigns and MMCH fan in toilet
Gumball FTW
Honestly I love the joke with gumballs legs and how they basically had their own thinking
Gone creeped me out when I was younger.
Yo spongebob what did you do with that boat because you slept
I like The Downer better. It's just less depressing
Fantdm Fan of Dan
It's supposed to be depressing though. Imagine being alone for a week.
The 5 Stages of Grief fit very well in these situations.
Can you believe I got a candy commercial, THEN a toothpaste commercial, back to back!?
6:40
I feel like you took the Spongebob episode to seriously. He was acting like the boat was alive after all. To me, that inherently means that this is all supposed to be a giant joke. Every "serious" interaction he had with the boat, I took as a joke; and a particularly funmy one at that. I still think Gumball did it better however, the ending worked to benefit the beginning better than spongebob. And I found the jokes in Gumball funnier.
The Downer is my least favorite episode of Gumball
(Worse than Gone)
I like The Downer more! :3
Even though I still like Gone though.
I thought with Spongebob it's funny because it's over dramatic
I actually watched the spogbob one as a kid and didn't mind because I was a dumb kid I didn't watch the gumball until later I didn't really remember it because again I'm a idiot and I didn't watch gumball that much the gumball episode is way better
the downer is actually my least favorite gumball episode.
They would make great friends and SpongeBob would be a positive influence and role model for Gumball. There seriously needs to be a crossover
I love how The Amazing World of Gumball dealt with mental health and how if you let frustrations and depression take over you, your own mental state would bring nothing but misery and gloom. And how in order to overcome it, you must remember the good times and rely on the memories of your loved ones
Ok I know that even the citizens of Bikini Bottom need a break from Spongebob, but he did things that he is usually not able to do like mess with Squidward's Claranet and get a boating license
Spongebob seasons 1-3 is better than gumball 2-6
good vid man
+reptilian huntress Thank you. ^^
Alpha Jay Show no prob ;)
Bully me all you want but I don’t see a lot of the appeal with the amazing world of gumball. Don’t get me wrong I still like the show but there are so many animated shows much better than it.
At 8:50 what do you mean by "That roblox movie i saw"
+le bread There is a Roblox user made movie that involves darkness just like this episode. It's low quality but it had a decent story and production from back then.
Metal Sphere Sprint Is roblox really decent? BAM
Omg, spongebob is so hated in bikini bottom. Like now I know that Patrick is just a fake friend towards him
Gumball got a face full of toilet bacteria for looking into it after flushing
I use love spongebob it not the same so gumball is my favorite show between then all nick show now
WAIT A MINUTE DOES HE HAVE A FUCKING BULGE
7:43
