I have been a paper crafter for YEARS and wish someone had told me at least a few of these things when I started. It would have kept me from buying those things that I thought I "needed" and then rarely used. And those single sheets of pretty paper. I finally learned that "kits" is the way to go. Everything is coordinated. No trying to figure what paper goes with what paper. This may seem overwhelming to a new crafter but watch and re-watch this video. Purchase what you can when you can.
It’s fascinating how we’re all paper crafters and are so different from each other. Kits were the biggest money wasters for me, though I’m happy the massive amounts of supplies from kits and other supplies I didn’t use were donated to a non-profit thrift shop and the money went to a cause I care about! Deciding on colors, cardstock, stamps and dies is a big chunk of what I love about paper crafting, especially color. If someone else has already done that, I lose interest.
I totally agree - invest in a MISTI stamp positioner. I tried stamping long ago, but gave up because I got frustrated if I couldn't get a good impression, and I didn't know of a way to restamp anything with wood mounted stamps. The MISTI is a game changer.
Maymay, I would recommend adding a basic hole punch to your beginner's list - easy to get and not very expensive. And while I have (and love) all the tools you recommend, I think the we r memory keepers the works tool should be a runner up alternate since it gives nearly all the tools plus a few in one package for about the same total investment, especially when you're working in limited space or your craft "space" moves to wherever you can find room! I have ended up with multiple trimmers and basic tools for my 4 daughters' and 3 nieces' weddings, school, and teacher projects!
Maymay...I am in so deep: head first! I am putting shelves up to hold all the stuff I have. Fortunate that I truly enjoy just being able to relax and make pretty things. Some days, I just make card fronts, some days - I just cut card bases. I love embossing folders and die cutting. I have a Gemini and a Cricut and use them both! Tons of stamps from everywhere, but definitely lots of yours. Crafting and card making is such an adventure. Do I regret diving in like I did; absolutely not! But I love learning all the things that you teach, especially about the basics. Thank you!
Since I've been only making cards for 7 years, I would like to hear about the advanced card making. Hearing your mistakes reminded me of some I made when I started out. More importantly, I would love to know more about how you use electronic cutting machines in card making, particularly, the Brother Scan n cut. Knowing how to cut images from patterned paper, etc would be so helpful.
OF COURSE we all want the advanced supplies video, yes please 🙂. I can't believe how far I've come in just a couple of years of card making. Learnt so much from RUclips videos like yours, and practice, practice, practice. It's so important to use the right product for the job. I'm currently destashing my craft room to gift unwanted items purchased at the start of my crafty journey. Thank you MayMay 💗
Most definitely would like an advanced! Personally, I think it's important to talk about solid-core cardstock as soon as possible. I regret the bargain paper packs that I am not using as a beginner card maker. That white edge just takes away from all of the hard work and effort, to me!
The misti is a great choice for beginners. If they have issues stamping they will be disappointed. It’s hard to be disappointed when stamping looks good.
Maymay, I appreciate you taking the time to do these videos. I'm a beginner and have thoroughly enjoyed the first few, and faithfully watch your videos. Thank you for helping me be creative.
I wish I had someone to share with me about product needs and wants when I started out in paper crafting. Lots of unneeded product AND mistakes! Once I found your channel, I was HOME! Your calm and fun way of sharing your tutorials are the best around (in my humble opinion). There are not enough thankyous to you, Vinnie, Shannon and the rest of the Maymay Made It Team...thanks to ALL! I would like to see your advanced version as well.
My Sweet Maymay!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this series. Yes I am now a seasoned papercrafter but way back when, I would have given anything to have had this series. I agree with the others that say YES to an advanced series as well. I spent 100's of dollars on sub-standard products just like you did. Once I realized that it was better to have one really good item than a lot that were not any good. Everything from stamps, tools, inks, and the list could go on and on. The word is Quality over Quanity. Once I found you...my papercrafting changed forever for the good. You have been the best teacher EVER and I WILL NEVER stop watching you. Even though my path has gone in a different direction, my love for you and your family & staff will forever be one founded in love, friendship and my mentor. I love you Maymay!!!
Maymay, I totally agree with you telling newbies to buy the regular Misti. I would have saved myself so much money had I started with it. Also, I love the Tim Holtz ruler. Great video!
Oh my goodness! I wish this video had been around when I started paper crafting! My purchases were all over the place. What you shared in this video is absolutely GOLDEN, May May! And ... it was so well thought out and so well presented! And you cracked me up at the end when you said that you talked your lipstick off! HAHAHAHAHA. You are the QUEEN of paper crafting, to be sure! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts, experiences and talents with us. Bless you!!!! ❤❤❤
I love the beginning info, even though I’m not a beginner. Lots of great tips and reminders. Helps me reflect on what I’m doing. But I’d also love some advanced videos too. Thanks.
As an experienced cardmaker, I enjoyed watching this. I would recommend the same things you did except I would add a tape runner. Totally agree with the Misti and the scoreboard. Good job!
Thank you so much for this series, I have made a total of 3 cards 2 went in the trash LOL. I learned a lot ! I bought textured cards but I did buy the good ink and some stamps. From years of quilting I have learned to buy multi purpose, so bought some clear stamps with messages for different occasions they just happen to be photo-polymer. At this point I want to focus on Birthday cards and holiday cards. I also want to thank Tamatha Luehers for replying to my call for help suggesting this beginners series.
Advanced video and electronic cutting machines video would be wonderful! Watching your videos is what got me into papercrafting and card making. It's been about five years now, and you continue to inspire me. 💕
This was all super good information. It’s so hard to think abou being a beginner when you’ve been crafting for years, but you did a great job narrowing it down. One thing you didn’t touch on was rubber stamps. If someone wants to start stamping and they go to a big box store for supplies, rubber stamps are still readily available and aren’t too overly expensive. I think it might be helpful to address rubber stamps in a future video. Another thing that might need clarification is that if they choose a paper trimmer that also has a scoring blade, they don’t necessarily need a scoring board. I’ve been crafting for many many years and still don’t use a scoring board very often, or if I need to score, I use my paper trimmer. For whatever reason, I had a hard time with a scoring tool. I just couldn’t get the hang of it, and I’m still not comfortable with it. That said, I really enjoyed this video. I very much would love to see advanced videos, too. Thank you for taking the time to do these!
Why oh why did I not come across this video when I started making cards this past June????? I would have saved myself from so much frustration and money.
You are so right! 💯I have been scrapbooking memories since 1994. There wasn't as much available then so I made ways to get the end result I was looking for. I think it truly brought out my creativity. As soon as it became all the rage I felt like I needed to have everything that they came out with. I bought way more than I could actually use. It's far better to research the products to determine what best fits what you are wanting to do and create.
Even though I have been crafting for years and have most of these products, I learned so much from this video and series. I can attest to following Maymay's advice- I bought most the these products and agree with her assessment. It's time for a replacement for some but overall they have lasted me for about 8 years, including the inks. I do need to buy re-inkers for my Memento and Versa Fine black ink pads and my ruler is pretty nicked up at this point but all the rest are spot on.
Such a great video! I too wish I would have had you to watch when I started stamping 20 years ago! I certainly did not have RUclips to watch, and you are helping new crafters save so much money by educating them, and explaining where to invest wisely. On behalf of future crafters, thank you! ✂️🙏🏾💵
What a wonderful video. I started making cards in about 1992 and all of the great things available now didn’t exist back then. We had wood stamps, white cardstock, and big trimmers. We had to create our own backgrounds because there were no designer papers out there. There were no stamp sets that coordinated. It’s so much easier to be successful now and create beautiful cards that your family and friends enjoy. May may, you are right on with the products you recommend. I have everything you showed, plus tons more. I use it every time.
Yes on the electronic cutting machines! That would be so helpful- I’ve had a Cricut Air2 for several years. I got so fed up with Design Space ( I have a Mac) that I put that Cricut in the cupboard and left it there. I recently saw your class on Design Space, and pulled the Cricut out again. I am now trying my Cricut again hopefully with a better attitude 😅 Thank you for all your help and classes, they are wonderful.
Would love the other two videos you suggested. I've been crafting & teaching for several years and its always good to get a reminder of where to start. Thank you for all you do!
I am new to card-making (started a business) and I am so glad you encouraged me to purchase the Misti while I was in your store. I have confidence in my stamping! I am LOVING these videos.
Yep, I got the good stuff! Now I need a checklist for advance materials…please! MayMay loving the new series your producing . Reminds me of the format you used when I first started watching. You Have a god anointed gift for teaching
I am a new crafter and wish I had seen this before, but luckily I had already bought most of what you suggested minus the Fiskars blocks from watching some of your previous videos. Thank you for posting this video, most helpful. I am most interested in making the paper crafts.
Hi Maymay! I am enjoying this series of videos and the information you are giving us even though I've been scrapbooking and card making for a while now. Where were you when I started? I could have used this information back then. Now, I have a room full of paper, stamps, cardstock and other items that I probably didn't need but I saw them and thought they were nice, so they came home with me. I'm looking forward to the next video in the series whatever topic it turns out to be. Thank you for explaining not only the information in this series of videos, but also the directions for making your projects in ways that are fun and easily understood. You are the best!!! Brenda
Thank you Maymay for all your wealth of knowledge, its so great to get hear what a beginner should get as we all try to get everything at once. Ive been crafting for years & wished I was told this information to save me money. I will use your advise to good use thank you again 🎉❤ From Perth Western Australia.🎉❤
I SOOOOOO appreciate your recommendations - I am getting back into stamping and things have changed SO much since I last made cards - this is great. I'd also love to see some advanced videos as well..👍🏼🥰
The only thing I would add to this list is VersaMark ink. Used with different color card stock it seems like you stamped with color. There is a wait for it to dry. And later you can expand to embossing.
Great video! A good refresher/"back to basics" for those of us who are more experienced. I second SO much of what was said in the first stamping section! I would def watch an "advanced" video too 🙂💓
Awesome ideas Maymay! I've been paper crafting for 30+ 😊years. Great suggestions for beginners and a great reminder to us that have been doing this for awhile, that we don't need "the kitchen sink" of things to paper craft. I have many things that I have bought thinking I needed them only to send them on through donation. I always learn from your RUclips videos! I would love to see an advanced crafter video. ❤
Fantastic video! Everything I would have LOVED to know before I bought all the stuff I bought. Great job! And yes...advanced and electronic cutting machines would be a great idea! I hate that I can't give your videos more than 1 thumbs up! I look forward to your next video!
Thank you for doing this series. It has helped me a lot and inspired me to start paper crafting. I would love to see an advanced video. Have learned so much since I found your channel. Thank you, again for all that you do!
I have been a paper crafter for years. I HATED stamping! Then I watched you use the Misti. Life changing! I love it! I am having fun! So, although it is expensive, I feel it’s worth it! You were absolutely right to include it for beginners!!! Thanks for all the hard work you put in for us!!!!
Everyone probably knows this, but I didn’t. I hesitated buying the Picture Perfect stamp set, which I love now, because I didn’t know that the measurements (3x4, 5x7 etc.) were separate from the borders. I thought they were one big stamp. Just an FYI for other beginners. Really enjoying these beginner videos. Thank you and blessings.
Thank you for this very informative information. You guys always do so much to help us "newbies". I really appreciate the time you give to help everyone. You guys are the greatest!
Oh my gosh this was wonderful. I tend to do what you did and buy supplies. Now I have a better knowledge of what I need to think about before buying! Live love live this! Thank you, Maymay!❤❤❤
I am enjoying this series Maymay and as a 12 x 12 scrapbooker, have all the things over the past 20 years, and never use a lot! It would be good to have your advice on destashing. I have tonnes of chipboard pieces and alphabets, vellum, and unopened as yet product kits. I love that you stick to your core products of paper, twine etc. and don't have bits from everywhere. Love your work from Australia!
I have been scrapbooking/cardmaking for 25 years and you were right on with your recommendations. Only thing different for me is the paper trimmer/cutter Looking forward to the advanced and cutting system I have the expression cricut that I use but the maker is still in the box afer 1 year. why?
What a great video!!! I have been card making/stamping for about 4 years. Wish some one would have told me this before I spent my leg and arm worth on supplies :) I would like to see the advanced supply list
I’d love to see an “advanced” supply list. 💗
I have been a paper crafter for YEARS and wish someone had told me at least a few of these things when I started. Maymays stamps are very reasonably priced and very high quality. I struggled with stamping before I discovered these products
I appreciate how you kept it simple for beginners and how NOT to spend a lot of money!!

Maymay, you need an Intermediate and Advanced!!!! Love this Video, even though I’m a little more advanced than beginner.

I would love to see an advanced episode! Thank you for your kindness and expertise.
I have to agree with advising beginners to get a stamp positioner. And just like you said - I started with a small and found I needed a larger one.
Oh… Yes… an advance list would be great! Thanks in advance Maymay!

I'm not a beginner, but I still learned something new today!! I would love an advanced video!! Thanks for all the info!!

Another bonus of using Mimento ink is it’s 23:07 fast drying.
Yes to both videos-advanced and electronic cutting machines!
I am new to card-making (started a business) and I am so glad you encouraged me to purchase the Misti while I was in your store. I have confidence in my stamping! I am LOVING these videos.

I love my CTMH blocks. Even as a beginner, I never had any problems
When you demonstrated the envelope board I went and bought one as I've never knew how to use when before
I am a new crafter and wish I had seen this before, but luckily I had already bought most of what you suggested minus the Fiskars blocks from watching some of your previous videos. Thank you for posting this video, most helpful. I am most interested in making the paper crafts.
Yes please! I would love to see some advanced information; supplies, techniques, ideas, etc. And thank you! :)
You are right on the mark with the video. I would add a cutting mat or work surface.
Great ideas. I waited a full year before getting a paper trimmer when I was learning. Yes please on the advanced list.
Yes to advanced class and electronic cutter. This was a great video for everyone
I have most of these supplies! Thank you for sharing Maymay, great tips! Have a wonderful day!🤗💜💕🌻

Would love to see an advanced video! Also, I agree regarding a stamp positioning tool…it’s what kept me making cards. I love it!
I love your videos! I'm not a beginner, but I still love watching because I might learn something I didn't know. Keep up the good work!!
Yes please on an advanced class. This one was fabulous and you hit all the mistakes I made too!

I would love an advanced series too!
I would def watch an "advanced" video too 🙂💓
Yes, Next level video!!!! I think if someone is starting they need to know about chip board
Yes please show us advance as well. Thank you!!!
Electronic cutting machines would be great. Thank you for doing theses videos.
Definitely need the cutting machine series, I got my Cricut Maker Christmas 2020 and I've used it once. 😔
I would love to see an advanced video on paper crafting, stamping
Would love an Advanced Lesson. Info very helpful. 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Just an FYI for other beginners.
Really enjoying these beginner videos. Thank you and blessings.

Oh my gosh this was wonderful. I tend to do what you did and buy supplies. Now I have a better knowledge of what I need to think about before buying! Live love live this! Thank you, Maymay!❤❤❤
I meant to say love, love, love this!
I didn’t know you made stamps! I’ll look for them, for sure.
Only thing different for me is the paper trimmer/cutter Looking forward to the advanced and cutting system I have the expression cricut that I use but the maker is still in the box afer 1 year. why?
Yes I would love to see the advanced video, you are such a great teacher thank you so much for your experience.
What a great video!!! I have been card making/stamping for about 4 years. Wish some one would have told me this before I spent my leg and arm worth on supplies :) I would like to see the advanced supply list
Love this video yes I want a video on cutters I have two and they are tired of living in a box
