- The 154th Open will be played at Royal Birkdale in 2026.
The iconic Southport links has previously hosted golf’s original Championship on ten occasions, the last of which was in 2017 when Jordan Spieth emerged victorious in a memorable final-round duel with Matt Kuchar to lift the Claret Jug for the first time.
The American joined a celebrated roll of Champion Golfers at Royal Birkdale, including Peter Thomson, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Ian Baker-Finch, Mark O’Meara and Padraig Harrington.
We look forward to another special occasion in three years and it will be fascinating to see which player will emerge to join a list of renowned Champion Golfers to have won at Royal Birkdale

Catastrophic tee shot on 13. Goes on to play Jedi level golf through the next 5 🏆
Remember being on vacation and watching this live like yesterday, can’t believe it’s been 6 YEARS 🥲
I was a member at Birkdale for 23 years. If you know the course, you won't believe that a pro could hit such a wild tee shot; nor that he could nearly hit the green from where he took the drop.
Nobody cares Marilyn
I was right there. Standing next to the bloke that he hit on the head. Jordan barely even apologised to the guy who had just taken his ball square on the head and was in a bit of a daze!! He’s head saved him the open!!
skill issue tbh
the chance you take when you're an observer at these events-- he'll live
Brings back memories of Ballesteros magic from the car park of '79 Open Championship at Royal Lytham... Both players played these hall of fame shots like a Boss 👏 🏆 😎

what a fantastic shot from the range
i remember watching live with my GF and even her palms were sweating... truly a miracle shot
kuch close to make birde made things even more crazy
to think that then he went to almost made a hole in one in the next shot, holly cow..... then eagle on the next hole i mean, the force is just strong with this one, i knew i was going to be a fan of Jordan forever after this..... amazing champion
"Meanwhile, Matt Kuchar is wishing he'd brought a good book."
I was just wondering if this was where he beat Matt Kuchar.

Nice coverage, but no context. Don't know what round, current leaderboard, didn't know which hole until the last 30 seconds of the video.
Titleist loving the free advertising
Fantastic performance closing that win out
Would have been nice if you put the year in description so people dont think its this year
What???? They haven't even played the first round yet so how is that even possible. Do you even watch golf ??
@Latebloomergolf yes I watch golf but I'm talking for people who don't follow. As you can read many have said "oh I didn't even know it was this week" Not hard to put date so that it's not considered clickbait
I had NO idea the Open was being held. Glad Spieth won.
It's not actually over yet

Starts next week Thursday 20th. This is from 2017.
@@mattburns617 I am in Thailand now and these things get lost to me time wise. Thanks for the heads up.
Yeah he won it this morning at 830am. On a Tuesday.
If I had a hundred people immediately locating my ball, I’d shoot much lower scores.
Wouldn't we all. Probably by about 3 strokes/round.
If I'm playing a casual round I'll sometimes take a free "gallery drop" if I can't find my ball in the rough but I know roughly where it landed. I still get high scores though 😂

How fitting that he's right next to the tietlist truck.
I can’t wait to drop a ball like 100 feet away and show this video as my excuse.
Is the crowd booing ?
No, they say Kuuuuch 😊
Spieth's win was amazing but he iced Kutcher with that slow as hell play..
I hit off line like this all the time. What's the big deal. Of course I don't have 100's of people in the way and not in a tournament. But I usually do find a lot of lost balls! lol
i want a strict shot clock on pga
I wonder if this made both of them overstay their UK visa…
Can someone tell me why he didn't go back to the tee and play 3 from there?
Well, it would have been a harder shot, from much further away, so probably that.
Yeah, somebody wrote 29 minutes and that’s kind of the way I feel I see Jordan Spieth as a overachiever I don’t care if anybody thinks I’m wrong or is a hater he’s neurotic he’s a perfectionist. He’s somethings off with the guy and these days under pressure he can see it cause a tough game. He had his run play with house, money being young and dumb. You only have that once I’ll take McIlroy Scheffler Fowler, Justin Thomas I had a space any day he just rubs me the wrong way.
Had money on Matt Kuchar, brutal to revisit this 😅
me too man
It took forever
This is the group in front of you at your local course
imagine if he went through all of this just to get hit with a pace of play penalty 😂
What about the 3 minute rule?
It was 5 mins at the time and that rule is how long you can search for a lost ball. the ball was found quite early in the saga
rather than changing the rule on the height of ball drops the R&A should take care of prohibiting such reliefs. they flout the spirit of golf. a shame
Why do people insist standing so damm close when a player is hitting out of the rough ? Don't they know the player is in there cause his last shot was squinty lol. It wouldn't be me. Idiots. What a shot that was btw 👏👏
Woow
Funnier than Mr. Bean plays golf.
That drop/line - Patrick Reed tier.
As a newer golfer and new to watching golf the most bothersome, cringe thing in all of sports to me is the fans sprinting towards the errant tee shot and crowding around this inanimate object laying in the grass. It’s idiotic. And infuriating when they crowd the golfer taking the shot from the rough.
Why was he able to take the ball back?
I think rules officials in this type of situation should say or confirm "here are your options on where to drop," and when a player says "I want to game the rules so I end up with a drop over there, and if I do x, y, or z, will that ultimately get me there?" the official should respond "you take your drop and then we'll figure out any applicable rules implications." I like Jordan Spieth but what he did here simply shouldn't be allowed. Not only did he throw out a bunch of hypotheticals to ensure he was going to end up with the drop he wanted, but he took WAY too long to do so.
That's mostly on the officials. He is entitled to know his legal options, and they were very slow to provide them. Him "gaming the rules" is completely legal and done in every tournament by a handful of various players.
Absolutely. You should get a ruling not be allowed to use them as a consultant. This was ridiculous.
@@garyco766 Yes, that's why I said "I think rules officials..." And yes I understand that a player using the rules to their advantage is legal and happens all the time. Again, my opinion is that officials should only provide advice for the ruling at hand, not, as @axileus9327 put it, act as consultants by going over hypotheticals and rulings which have nothing to do with the ruling at hand. In this case, I'd prefer if the officials only provided info re: where the ball could be dropped under the unplayable lie rule and had waited to provide any info or advice under the Temporary Immovable Obstruction rule if/when that hypothetical became a reality (i.e. after Spieth dropped a ball and was actually obstructed by the TIO).
Shouldn't have been granted a drop. The driving range was out of bounds earlier in the round and should be the same for the rest of the field. As usual stupid officials bullied into a decision
@@kw4029Bullied my Ass ,Hater!
I was on that hole….. because it’s all about me 😂😂😂
Did Spief address his ball before turning his swing into a practice swing rather than a whiff - 2+ times?
What happened to play it where it lies
Making another player wait that long in this situation is indefensible.
Why have a dig at the rules officials? They were just doing their jobs. They weren't intentionally making MK wait that long.
@@Eat-MyGoal then they should be empowered to tell a golfer to f off and get moving if he’s trying all this hypothetical “If I drop here do I get relief there…” the officials should just tell him here’s the rules and if you break them you’ll be penalized, also hurry up you are on the clock. The 2nd shot took almost 15 minutes. There’s no reason that should be allowed.
@@axileus9327 that’s what happened, essentially. The golfers all know the rules, but Jordan was asking about a very specific situation, and it is the rules officials duty to make a decision.
I remember watching this live. Absolutely ridiculous how this was handled by Spieth and the rules officials. They essentially helped him cheat for the win.
another ridiculous video title. How did he "win the Open from the Driving Range"? He made bogey, Kucher made Par and Spieth was down by 1 at this point. Was it important for him to make bogey after that tee shot? Maybe, I mean he won by 3. Would things have been different if he makes a bigger number there? Maybe, but he certainly didn't "win the open from the driving range".
Yeah, without context in the video, I was thinking for almost whole that it's 18th and this is the hit for victory.
...and he won by 3 strokes
This video could've been 3 minutes instead of 20 jesus
I would've used an iron also, much more control------all the euros are flabbergasted of the imputance and questionable parameters of such a borderline attempt----- cool your jets dudes , its great for ratings and gets ppl interested in golf
Pace of play …….😅
Not super relevant, because he was waiting on the rules officials for the better part of that time.
“I’m w you” says the rules official. I’m declaring was a a gigantic lie
The greatest there ever was, the greatest there is, the greatest there will ever be
What an immense amount of boredom. Can’t wait till this game moves on with the old folks
Don’t watch it then.
You couldn't par any hole.
First of all, this title is misleading, to say the least. Spieth did not win the tournament via this shot as implied. As a matter of fact, he lost a shot to Kuchar.
Secondly the announcing here left a lot to be desired. 20 minutes and we don't get a view or mention of the current leaderboard?
Quick reminder....This hole destroyed Jordan. Hes won twice since this Open. 2 wins in 7 years.
You are way off on that. He went on the play unbelievably over the next five holes. If he was "destroyed" he wouldn't have been able to do that. His playing suffered eventually because he had a broken bone in his hand that he didn't have repaired and it changed his swing.

💀💀💀💀
I think he was trying to decide which club to hit and his caddie just walked elsewhere to forecaddie. By the way, he should received a penalty for slow play.
Spieth got preferential treatment here. Not a good moment for the British open to highlight in my opinion
Truly. Not good sportsmanship to delay play and march all over the course looking for an angle for 30 minutes.
It was all by the rules. The official being slow to rule was the main delay. I agree that it took WAY too long, but so long as the officials are engaged and being waited on, nothing to do about it.
@@garyco766 the walking back and forth caused the delay. He should’ve been stroked. You don’t get to search for a ball that long soo it doesn’t make sense
Ridiculous putting solves all swing problems
Don't you just love it when the commentator says that the drive is catastrophic and the player then goes on to win The Open Championship! Where do they find these people?
Because the drive was catastrophic
It obviously wasn’t catastrophic because he won! 🤣
Are you broken
Look in the mirror!
@@GWills-ys6rd He hadn't won it at the time of the drive. The ball ended up in deep rough on a slope so steep he might have needed climbing gear to navigate it. He was more than 200 yards from the hole while his immediate rival was in the fairway. Catastrophic was a perfect description at the time it was made. PS: You're a clown 🤡🤡
Two things: Isn’t the driving range always out of bounds? His caddie went to the top of the hill to guide the line, I don’t think that’s legal 😚
Good call man you probably know better than the multiple rules officials watching this closely as it was happening in real time
1. Not always, as evidenced by this video. 2. It's legal to for a caddie to act as an aiming point as long as he moves before the player hits the shot.
@@jonkarow1853 the rules they don’t always follow when it comes to the pros, I have noticed. Can you tell me how he could go back in a straight line 20-30 yards at the right when it was not that line the ball came from. The referees often look through their fingers.
These are the best golf officials in the world. Speith is a really smart player; he knows the rules as well as the top officials. A smart player like Speith always defers to the official to eliminate any potential mistakes he may make. I’ve been in this situation many times, let the officials determine your next shot.
@@Kiwigucci They are using Model Local Rule F-23: Temporary Immovable Obstructions.
The trucks in this case are not normally part of the course, so players get "line of sight" relief, and can drop the ball where they have clear line of sight to where they want to play.
Should’ve been penalized… fn ridiculous
One reason for too many rules in golf.
should never have been given that amount of time to play it... had a negative impact to the other players. Should have been penalised shots for slow play
15 minutes long. Not fair to other players.
100% agree. The trouble finding the ball, it being nowhere near where the crowd initially gathered, the obscene drop where he intentionally had to take relief from the trucks not in line with the flag anyways, time all of it took... it's all theoretically in the letter of the law but not the spirit.
Absolutely. If they allow him to play to the letter of the rules and move his ball all over, then he should also have to play to the rules about keeping pace of play. This was absolutely ridiculous and not very sporting.
golf is not a timed sport you bunch of dillweeds.
@@axileus9327the rules specifically list this as an exception to the pace of play rule, ur the one who said u want to follow the rules lmao
this was an absolute disgrace....something like 30 minutes to play shot ....by then Kucher had lost his rhythm ...was there marshalling on 18 th green...
It’s worse now that I’ve revisited. Excruciating seeing a player take this much time. There’s no reason this should be allowed.
10 minutes to make one shot
You are disqualified
Even once he had a live ball he took 5 minutes
Straight to jail.
Off with his head.
There should be suspentions or massive fines for this kind of nonsense.
Dropped in completely the wrong place! Were the official on drugs? Why didn't they say something? Why wasn't he disqualified after the fact? Scandalous!
How do come to that conclusion? Line between the ball and hole brought him into the trucks and he then took free relief from the trucks
@@TheJohnnyblazsus line to the flag was much more to his left and back. Even the commentators said so
@@niceperson5962 they said that when he was on the range. Any further left and he's back on the course
Once the officials give him the okay, it's legal. They can't exactly go back and say "Remember that ruling that WE gave you? It was wrong, so you're disqualified".
"unplayable" Bull***, you're a professional, play it as it lies
Absolute disgrace. His line was 30 yards to the left and he knew it.
Not sure why they didn't take the drop along his line of play, which would have put him on the other side of the ridge and been a much easier shot. It also wouldn't involve all the trucks and stands, the driving range, etc.
Wow, an award winning title right there....for the worst youtube video title of the year.
Should have got a slow play penalty - this whole sequence is a joke
Play it, where it lies!! such BS...not even in line with the flag, from where it ended up.
Luckiest open win you will see. Boy hits it so far offline he gets relief and good lies. Kuchar misses the fairway but a foot and is Inthe thick stuff. Kuchar a fanny though so it wasn't the best choice either way.
Ridiculous, should of made him tee off again , how is that not out of bounds, making your playing partner wait that long is not on
Jordan is my favorite golfer, and he’s classy, great with fans, and universally respected. BUT this isn’t the first time he’s taken an ABSURD amount of time to try to take advantage of every tiny nuance within given or implied rules. It’s unfair to his playing partner and to the groups behind him. And it’s bad for the game. Love Jordan, but I hate when he does this.
The people are absolutely ridiculous the way they act!
