  • The 154th Open will be played at Royal Birkdale in 2026.
    The iconic Southport links has previously hosted golf’s original Championship on ten occasions, the last of which was in 2017 when Jordan Spieth emerged victorious in a memorable final-round duel with Matt Kuchar to lift the Claret Jug for the first time.
    The American joined a celebrated roll of Champion Golfers at Royal Birkdale, including Peter Thomson, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Ian Baker-Finch, Mark O’Meara and Padraig Harrington.
    We look forward to another special occasion in three years and it will be fascinating to see which player will emerge to join a list of renowned Champion Golfers to have won at Royal Birkdale

    I think rules officials in this type of situation should say or confirm "here are your options on where to drop," and when a player says "I want to game the rules so I end up with a drop over there, and if I do x, y, or z, will that ultimately get me there?" the official should respond "you take your drop and then we'll figure out any applicable rules implications." I like Jordan Spieth but what he did here simply shouldn't be allowed. Not only did he throw out a bunch of hypotheticals to ensure he was going to end up with the drop he wanted, but he took WAY too long to do so.

    • @garyco766
      @garyco766 10 месяцев назад +2

      That's mostly on the officials. He is entitled to know his legal options, and they were very slow to provide them. Him "gaming the rules" is completely legal and done in every tournament by a handful of various players.

      @@garyco766 Yes, that's why I said "I think rules officials..." And yes I understand that a player using the rules to their advantage is legal and happens all the time. Again, my opinion is that officials should only provide advice for the ruling at hand, not, as @axileus9327 put it, act as consultants by going over hypotheticals and rulings which have nothing to do with the ruling at hand. In this case, I'd prefer if the officials only provided info re: where the ball could be dropped under the unplayable lie rule and had waited to provide any info or advice under the Temporary Immovable Obstruction rule if/when that hypothetical became a reality (i.e. after Spieth dropped a ball and was actually obstructed by the TIO).

      1. Not always, as evidenced by this video. 2. It's legal to for a caddie to act as an aiming point as long as he moves before the player hits the shot.

      These are the best golf officials in the world. Speith is a really smart player; he knows the rules as well as the top officials. 100% agree. The trouble finding the ball, it being nowhere near where the crowd initially gathered, the obscene drop where he intentionally had to take relief from the trucks not in line with the flag anyways, time all of it took... it's all theoretically in the letter of the law but not the spirit.

BUT this isn’t the first time he’s taken an ABSURD amount of time to try to take advantage of every tiny nuance within given or implied rules. It’s unfair to his playing partner and to the groups behind him. And it’s bad for the game. Love Jordan, but I hate when he does this.
