Let me know what you think! Are you going to use this? Or do you already have your own solution? It supports us if you watch the entire video, but for those in lack of time, the timestamps are in the description! ♥
Hello I can’t find the floor lamp on IKEA in the U.S. site. It turns out it’s discontinued in the U.S. I’m guessing you ordered it a long time ago. It looks like the cable management solution I’ve been looking for.
You are without a doubt, the embassador of VR. My gosh look at all the work that went into all of this, wow. And it's to help people with a very base-problem with the platform,---- and THEN some! Thank you! this is awesome, appreciate the links, and keep this channel going!
It is now Oct 2022. I just purchased the Valve Index and will be installing it in my basement soon as I get some Base station stands. Found your video on Extending the cabling of the headset. Bookmarked your video link for parts that you used in case I want to do this. Thank you for the video. Take care.
What I found when using pulleys is that it works better if you use something similar to a cable tie to fix the position where the pulley attaches to the cable. (e.g. The pulleys from Kiwi Design have them already) You don't really want the cable to slide through the hooks when you move around, as that can lead to inconsistent tension, where sometimes the cable will be very stiff but sometimes there will be too much slack that it hits your head. You want the cable to be fixed, so when you move around, the pulley strings instead of the cable itself are extended, so the cable will never have any extra slack, and the tension is always consistently low until you move too far.
Please Valve, wireless adapter! Just not to soon because Cas just went through the hassle of setting up a cable extension and management. Next week would be fine [})
@@CasandChary Have you thought of the Vive Trackers you can attach to your body. They are the only ones combined with Valve index controller and any headset can completely cover your whole body in motion capture now that I think about it. What do you think, although not perfect (still early products) combining these 3 hardware pieces could do some impressive things such as fully interacting with hands and feet, able to do punches and kicks, and even do Beat saber with complete immersion as if you can dance in?
Index cannot ever be wireless. The connection it uses is part of keeping the refresh rate high enough, which is part of why it has better performance and less motion sickness.
Overhead cable management was a game changer for me. I first tried it with PSVR years ago and I haven't ever been able to go back. Virtual Desktop is great with Quest (I still use link and PSVR, at times, as well) but if you're using a cable with anything, overhead management is the way to go!
Thanks, this hardware worked for me too-I got some weird interference at first, but then I reseated the USB cable in my PC and it went away 👍🏼 also, the pic @8:56 pointed me to getting some curly retractable cables which have less resistance than the pulleys alone, so overall this has been a very helpful video for me-thank you Cas & Chary 😺
Exactly the video I needed. Came back to comment I bought all the stuff minus the lamp thing and set it all up. Great job of explaining everything and links to what is needed.
I literally have close to an identical setup as her with the provided amazon links as well and I can confirm there is no performance drop at all. The only difference I have on my end is using a Virtuix boom arm rather than the ceiling pulley system. Cheers.
I recommend getting a repeater instead of an extention, I've had weird problems with an extention but a repeater just boosts the signal as well as extending it
I can't believe that I played through HLA with my headset keeping sliding off which pretty much ruined my playthrough. THANK YOU for telling dumb me that I can just tie it up to a very high ponytail x.x. It's so much better!!
2:42 See that cable on the left? What is that? What is it for and where does it go because my headset is second hand and it's not starting at all. That's the only cable I haven't plugged in yet, and there doesn't seem to be a single video in the UNIVERSE that just explains how to set up a valve index. I'm sensing that's the power cable, but the guy I bought it from is claiming to have no idea why I'd need such a thing and I should have everything.
Thanks for the VR tips, have an Audio tip in return, bring the mic a little closer and point yourself towards it slightly. Also tilt it up a little towards your face. Keep in mind though you are right not to have it DIRECLY in front of your face, but you do already have a pop-filter so you can certainly speak into the mic more directly. You just sound so distant, and it seems like we are hearing more reflected sound than direct sound, it makes you sound weird and makes you hard to understand.
I think a better pully system at a similar price would be the ones by KIWI on amazon. They have adjustable snug rubber ties, the cables are silent, and they include everything you need and instructions. Highly recommended, but use a link of theirs as I as this is Cas and Chary's video. The one thing I never see answered in the extension discussion is the power; however, I am guessing that this gets you 18 feet from the point that all of the adapters are, and you are not trying to float them as well, which I think would be problematic.
I linked that one in the description too! Never tried it myself, I still had those older pulleys laying around. What is the question about power? I placed an outlet extender where the cables need power, which is near the lamp.
@@CasandChary I think that answers it. It would be nice if you could actually extend the overhead portion, but getting it a number of feet beyond the PC before going to the original cable benefits a lot of folks, but in my case would only net me about 1 meter, but in my case, it makes the 10X10 space I have work. Thanks for your videos as always!
such a fantastic and high quality video, ty! i really wanted a link to that lamp stand! haha i guess i have to search manually! thx for all the other links! i already ordered the pulleys.
I have been wanting to try out the pulleys in my room for awhile now! I feel like they would make a world of difference in immersion, AND video creation. Coming from somebody who LOVES immersion in games lol
one thing that sucks is that it feels like theres barely any cables here in Finland, especially not some more unique ones and even a repeater is hard to find.
@8:55 I've seen people put up with way less & complain. I'm astounded. Is it unreasonable to believe that companies developing tethered VR headsets could create a wireless version that harnesses the capabilities of a custom-built computer?

First thing I bought was a display port extension when I got the index and was pissed to notice these weird white snowflake specs whenever you were looking at a dark scene. I was pissed that they could just not have used and HDMI cable so I could just use the VIVE link box. Glad they finally made a display port repeater.
I've cablematters repeater, plugged a 10 mts optic fibber cable on PC displayport and Index cable on the other side of the repeater and the display om Index is perfect (at 144 Hz too); sometimes StemaVR doesn't recognize the headset but after (some) reinitializations it detects the headset; also have 10 mts active USB 3.0 cable connected
Extending the cable is nice, but nothing will bet a real wireless module. We need either a wireless module for index or we need an entirely new headset that can be connected with PC wirelessly.

When I hear the words male to female... the first thoughts that come to mind are cables XD :p
Is it just me or is the audio a bit off?
This is only for the scenes with my face cam right? If so, I had my microphone badly placed :( So sorry about that. Hope you can still understand me.
@@CasandChary It's fine. Very good video otherwise. I'm getting an index so thank you. 😁😂
@@monkeytum24 I added English subs too just in case! :) And AWESOME! Hope it arrives soon.
@@CasandChary Yep thanks! :D
where did you get that lamp?
Nice (affordable) video solution, was looking for an affordable solution available in The Netherlands.
LinusTechTips also made a video about this but went extreme ($1000+ USB Fiber Extension and Fiber DisplayPort extension) for a large distance VR extension, 3rd floor to 1st floor.
Hello, I also live in the Netherlands and the products she shows in the video have a high sending cost.
Did you find something similar that could be ordered from a Dutch shop directly (like allekabels)?
Olivier Roussel She is also located in The Netherlands, look around on Tweaker’s for local shops.
I ended up buying a more fancy solution with fiberglass HDMI & DisplayPort.
Plus a fiber USB extension.
DGM thanks for the info. In the end for some items I found alternative brands and it works perfectly!
Sounds like a good pickup line: "Hey, I have this awesome male to female connector, want to check it out?" :P lol
Gucci awesome vid
Glad to hear!
For some reason my friend said that the valve index is bad and it exploded on someone blah blah blah
I now have 3k dollars worth of index set up material
male cable ends > female cable ends
