But he wrote a book. The Book of the Five Rings. With even a managed ego, he must have felt writing a book would carry forward his thoughts, beliefs and therefore a bit of himself, his biography. Which it did.
He wrote a couple of books, so he had to have some thoughts of posterity. And fighting was how young samurai made a name for themselves. And all the dojo storming he did indicates he was trying to build up his reputation.
Ive watched this series more than a dozen times now... still love it and the production thank you so much for this

I first learned of Musashi Miyamoto from Inagaki's "Samurai" trilogy with Toshiro Mifune as Musashi. RUclips's algorithms have discovered that I pay attention to Musashi stuff, so this video came up in my recommendations. BTW, if you've never seen Inagaki's trilogy, give it a watch. The three films are a real tear-jerker/soap opera, but they feature memorable fight scenes, characters and cinematography.

I wonder how Musashi reconciled the dharma with his past killings. If you have any knowledge of Buddhism, one of the precepts is to not kill or take life. This is not a commandment, but instead a tool to help avoid generating unnecessary karma. It is obvious (and he mentions it in his writings) that he practiced buddhism even from a young age. At the point when he was developing his talent he would have been in opposition with the dharma. Not because he was breaking a precept but instead because he felt the need to conquer others. As the zen quote goes, it is meaningless if a man can defeat a thousand men but heaven bows to a man who conquers himself. Only later in life did he discover the way and in this discovery he realized there was no need. It was like sword fighting and violence was the road towards realization that sword fighting and violence was unnecessary. I just wonder if this ever impacted him or was the culture an over-riding force or did the realization make the entire experience clear?

Although he is universally well-known in the martial arts world and to students of Eastern cultures and religion, in terms of being a truly fascinating historical figure who is relatively unknown to the average Westerner Musashi ranks very high. And in my opinion - for the reason you stated in your post - he is also one of history's more complex and enigmatic figures.
Krumple Themal Miyamoto Musashi recorded the moment he achieved sattori after killing an opponent by the name of Sasaki Kojiro. After that Musashi never used a real sword in any duels again only using a bokken which he then still inflicted fatal wounds on his opponents.

Perhaps Musashi's father treated him badly because his mother died in childbirth. And his father blamed it on Miyamoto.

No one knows for sure if Musashi's mother died in childbirth. There's considerable confusion over his parentage, with one of the scenarios involving his mother dying in childbirth.
