Not really. All you need to do for a straight top stitch is to line up the presser foot against the seam.

I did my first DIY sofa cover.. I saw him and i said ohh that was easy.. So i tried..thought it was easy for a woman. the hard thing for me was the gun tacker lol..but so satified and proud i covered my sofa.
