Mel Brooks Details The Secrets Of "Blazing Saddles" | CONAN on TBS
/ teamcoco - Развлечения
Then there was the scene in Mel Brooks' "Robin Hood, Men In Tights" when Dave Chappelle was chosen to replace the Sheriff of Nottingham and folks gasped "A black sheriff?" and the response was "Why not? It worked in Blazing Saddles."
Blazing saddles is funny.
Whaaaaaaaaaat they cut that scene I’m watching it now I will be seriously pissed if they cut that well I noticed when the lady’s jumped onto their horses one of the horses was supposed to say she’s got to be kidding I was like wth
@@elanmimoun3898
Who-the-hell said "that scene was cut", idiot??
@@elanmimoun3898 it wasn't cut I think the original commenter just worded it strangely.
Don’t forget the part where King Richard kissed Maid Marion and Rabbi Tuckman looked into the camera and said “It’s good to be the king.”
"It's not Hedy, it's Hedley, Hedley Lamarr."
"What are you worried about? It's 1874. You'll be able to sue her."
She did sue. But Brooks said to pay her something, and that apparently satisfied her.
By the way, she also co-invented a radio transmission technique called Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum.
saw this live. after being introduced, Brooks came out with a folding chair and placed it on the opposite side of the Conan's desk. He said every interview is done the same way, and he just wanted to change things up a bit.
Thanks, I was wondering why Brooks was on the wrong side.
Wow, thanks. I'm sure every viewer of this clip was wondering about that.
Mel Brooks is such a legend.
Where the white woman at?
"talent?"
" cattle Stampeding."
"Stampeding? that's not a talent."
"Through the Vatican!?!"
"...kinky."
I'd love to have seen that.
Through the Vatican?
GildaLee27 ...Kinky!
Oh, why Rex, how many times do I have to tell ya to wash up after weekly cross burning?
Mel Brooks is 96 years old and I’m so glad he’s still with us.
It's sad that he's the only cast member of Blazing Saddles still alive today. Protect this man at all costs.
@@taracarroll4218 History of the World Part 2 is coming out.
@@zekelucente9702 Yeah, I heard. I know sequels struggle to live up to their predecessors, but I hope it's more a Wayne's World 2 than a Zoolander 2. I'm sure it will still have classic Brook's cheekiness.
@@taracarroll4218 I’ve seen some clips and there very good with numerous great cameos.
@@taracarroll4218 I was wrong History of the World Part 2 is going to be a limited TV series.
I think the random guy who wandered back in actually helps make the scene. It's funny as hell just having someone 'normal' standing there while chaos appears, it falls in with the whole 'breaking-the-fourth-wall' feeling of the entire movie.
Except that 99% of the viewers didn't notice him, or if they did, never assumed the guy was not part of the cast.
@@deanronson6331you don't need to know he's not an actor for it to be funny, but it's definitely funnier if you do
He should have done the arm sucking bit. That was killer.
Right?
Yeah, but 1974.
Absolutely.
It would’ve been one of the most quoted parts of the film
The story Is heard it was "Excuse me, mam... but you're sucking on my elbow!" And I think elbow has been the funnier word to use. But indeed they should've left it in the film.
To me Lily chanting over and over "it's twue" is a very quotable moment, I would hate to see it go.
R.I.P Gene Wilder. One of the very few GREAT funny men!
and his sister died also 2016, Corinne.
And the clip makes me want to sing along -

Stick out your tush
Hands on your hips

John Williams
"You vulgar shit!" (Followed by, "I'm parked over by the commissary.")
RIP Dom Deluise
I’M WORKING FOR MEL BROOKS!!!!!!!!!!!
Mel Brooks is 87 and is younger and more full alive then me. I think that's the key to a long and happy live.
So if I'm younger and more full of life than you I'm golden!
Yes!
No better comedic genius, than Mel Brooks.
Ever seen any Jacques Tati movies? They are pretty good!
"The Sheriff is a..." BONG!!!!!
"What did he say?"
"He said the Sheriff is near."
"That's not what I said! I said..the Sheriff is a..." BOONGGGG!!!!
IMO THAT scene was the absolute best comical genius of Mel Brooks in any film.
This is what the future prints will sound like.
@@cratedog64 But wasn't it written by Richard Pryor?
Pryor co-wrote, and was supposed to star as the sheriff. But given his, um, substance-abuse proclivities, he was considered uninsurable by the completion guarantors.
I have watched Blazing Saddles 46 times now and it is still funny
if you can guess at how many times youve seen it, you havent seen it enough.
Ralph Allen Beach I've watched it at least 50 times on my old vhs copy. I've owned the DVD and I have the bli Ray now, lol. Now try to guess how many times I've seen it, I know I can't. Lol
I didn’t get a hurumph outta that guy!
Best comedy of all time. Hands down!!! Harvey Korman, Cleavon Little, Madeline Kahn, and Gene Wilder all deserved Oscars. The scene where Cleavon Little is speaking in front of the townspeople introducing himself as Sheriff is priceless. When he pretends to choke himself with a gun to his head is hysterical.
I’ve only seen it once
I hope Conan extended a laurel and hardy hand shake to Mr. Brooks after the interview
This movie was the bar of comedy during my childhood. I didn't completely understand everything going on at the time and it just got better as I got older.
Actually the scene WAS in Blazing Saddles. What Mel cut out was Cleavon Little's line about "sucking on my arm". The scene ended with Madeline Kahn saying "It's twue, it's twue!". A few years later, George Harrison used that line "it's twue, it's twue!" in his song Crackerbox Palace. He loved Blazing Saddles.
Ken Henderson they say they cut it for rating reasons, but i actually feel it's more gratuitous without the arm comment, and nowhere near as funny
The scene was different. He comes in her dressing room and she changes into something more comfortable. Blows out the candles, sits next to him, you hear his pants unzip and does the line. The sausages are the next morning.
I love when the hangman is hanging the criminal on the horse and there is a noose on the horse and the guy. Comedy gold.
@Oona Craig it was already a cliche in 1974? Ok mate 🤣
Imagine the backlash that scene would cause if it was made in today’s over sensitive world. Lol
Love Mel Brooks, wish he was still making those wonderful movies.
As far as I've heard, he's currently working on one :)
There’s been recent talks bout a looooong over due Space Balls 2
Dom DeLuise in Blazing Saddles. "This is a closed set!". I love it.
"You're suckin on my arm!" M.B. is a GOD.
A few years back I watched Blazing Saddles with my 16 year old son who had never seen it before. We were dying laughing.
A man drink like that and he don't eat he gonna die!
"...when!?!"
When?
My thirteen year old loves Mel brooks, he’s got an eye for talent-I didn’t even tell him how famous he is and his rep.-😎💐🤩
I don’t know the context but I love how he’s just to the right of the table and sitting on a folding chair! 😂
I could just see him bringing out the chair and switching it up on Conan for the hell of it?!?
I have seen the scene he took out, and its almost funnier than what he describes! !
That's version is the one I saw first
Mel Brooks: Comedy Genius. National Treasure
A few perfect movies exist. Movies that are so fine tuned nothing could make them any better. The Godfather 1 & 2, Goodfellas, and Blazing Saddles are among perfection.
Say what you will about Blazing Saddles and its impact, IMHO it put the send up genre into a new direction. When you have the good guys go riding into the sunset in a chauffeur driven, 1973 Cadillac limousine, the Hollywood western just got spun on its ear.
"Pirandello-ish!"
There's what people don't get about Mel - everyone assumes he and his humor are just lowbrow and vulgar. But Mel is really an intellectual.
@Oona Craig I know I'm right.
mel brooks. comedy genius
Hedey Lamar was my favorite movie villain, I love Blazing Saddles.
HEDLEY!
@ 1:49. A star is born. That guy went on to win the 1974 Academy Award for "Best Unhired Movie Extra"!!
"Let me just whip this out." (Everybody screams) Haha
You forgot the disappoint "Ohhh..." when it was just a speech on paper, lol.
Blazing Saddles is my favourite movie and I'm only fourteen
Most of my mates haven't even heard of it
"sounds like steam escaping...."
i always marvel at mel brook's brilliant and sharp mind ,, even in his 90s
Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency in the west. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Mel Brooks..the greatest.
"Political correctness is the death of comedy"- Mel Brooks
Now, who can argue with that! We should be grateful to Gabby Johnson for that speech.
@@robertmrmark1205 we need a brave visionary like mel brooks to come in now and spoof political correctness so hard it becomes impossible to take seriously again. Matt Stone and Trey Parker can only do so much
It was less about being against political correctness and more about placing a minority as a lead in a common idealist trope. In Blazing Saddles it was the western. When a black man was a the lead sheriff, things like racism could no longer be swept under the rug. If Blazing Saddles were made today it wouldn't juust say edgy jokes. It would point out the overlooked flaws in society and further bring to light the treatment of minorities. I would imagine most people who cry against political correctness for the sole purpose of wanting to say offensive things would hate blazing saddles if it were remade for a modern audience
@@ericjames6501 Exactly!!! They confuse saying racist, hateful things with someone who is inserting racist characters or subject matter to then demolish it with a comic response. I hear this said of Don Rickles also, but he was acting a character on stage who was offensive to every one equally, but he was clearly exaggerating it and in reality he was a lovely man. Same with Mel Brooks. He showed the stupidity of bigotry by mocking racist characters. People who just want to be offensive will look for a lifeline to excuse their attitudes.
@Bill New York Yep, but he might doesn't get the reprecusions of that, maybe it's just political thing.
"What a nice guy"
The line he refers to at the end was written by Richard Pryor. And it was 'elbow".
+Brooklyn Avenue richard pryor also came up with Mongo
bears fan1983 awesome!
Drive me off this picture.
If this movie was made today the pc people would be goose stepping around his house for months.
True.
The real irony is that a lot people, including the extremely pc and their nemeses, ignore that Blazing Saddles wasn't just satirizing segregation, racism, and white flight for laughs, but to make people think about those things as well. And I think it would be harder to make it today though not impossible, but it wouldn't be harder just because of pc censorship. There is also the conservative movement and especially the alt-right that are deep in bed with white supremacist groups that attempt to censor or shut down any discussion of racism, whether it be individual or institutional. If a movie like Blazing Saddles came out today, they would attack it as reverse racism or propaganda supporting white genocide.
i've seen quite a few people who i consider to be progressive enjoy that movie, because they know it's satirical. Is it possible for Edgelords to enjoy something without convincing themselves "The PC People" probably hate it?
if they made Blazing Saddles today? It'd suck. because most comedies made today are a product of the studio, cold and deprived of personality. how about instead of whining about The PC People, just enjoy the fact that Blazing Saddles was made in a time when Mel Brooks had creative control over his project
Sorry, but not many "progressive" people have any sense of humor. It's tough to have one when you worry about any little thing potentially offending one person. Unless you can offend all white people, all men, all Christians, or all Southerners. Then it's ok and hilarious!
Why is Brooks sitting on a folding chair?
Because he's Mel Brooks.
+alex tworkowski Cuz he wanted to be different and sit on the side no one sits.
nomakym Is that true? I believe he would do that. Good answer. Thanks.
MOST LIKELY HIS BACK IS LIKE MINE.....IT CANT sit on a soft couch or chair AT ALL.
READ MY COMMENT ABOVE THIS
Mel Brooks: Genius !
I was in the audience of one of Conan's NBC test shows (unbroadcast) in studio 6A in September 1993 - Al Lewis and Madeline Khan were the guests. I remember it fondly, these test shows must have been trying to get Conan fit and fresh for the challenge of replacing Dave Letterman, and maybe that's why NBC delayed the start of the show way back then. During the show, Conan came out into the audience and interviewed a few people and bleeped them, accusing them of foul language - it was very funny! Lovely to have seen Madeline Khan too, Rest in Peace.
Are we not going to talk about how Conan has the great comedy writer of all time sitting in a folding chair?
I still can’t believe that Mel Brooks has outlived almost everyone else who was in this movie. I’m glad he’s still here, of course, but I would have lost money betting on it.
There is no one like Mel wish he would do another movie I love this man pure genius
Unfortunately, very few of his best movies would get green-lighted today.....certainly not Blazing Saddles.
He made a flop with Leslie Nielsen called Dracula: Dead and Loving It
If none of Mel's movies were spoofs, his filmography would be quite diverse, genre wise. I mean, you have western (Blazing Saddles), horror (Young Frankenstein and Dracula: Dead and Loving it), science fiction (Spaceballs), silent (Silent Movie) and suspense (High Anxiety).
And a movie about history (History of the world)
Plus a musical (The Producers) and medieval adventure (Robin Hood: Men In Tights). Not sure how to classify The Twelve Chairs.
Chewing gum in line? I hope you brought enough for everyone
ALF CARJACKS THE CLOWN I didn't know there was gonna be so many!!!

I paused the video when he was talking about the guy that walked into the scene by mistake. I then spent 15 minutes searching youtube for the clip, gave up, came back to this video, and the next thing Conan says is "We have the clip." Figures, lol
i never seen it til just a few days ago,it was pure comedy genius,Mel Brooks is the GOAT for making these amazing movies
Love the good old classic comedies, where it actually made you laugh.
Not many of today's comedy films make me laugh.
Genius. Thanks for this.
Mel Brooks reminds me of my Grand Father he looks just like him and sounds just like him so Everytime I want to here his voice again I watch Mel Brooks
Happy 95th Birthday to the great Mel Brooks.
“I didn’t get a harumph out of that guy”
Mel Brooks is the Shakespeare of comedy. None better.
Mel is a little dishonest with the dressing room scene. Richard Pryor wrote the scene and Clevon little originally said ," Baby, you're sucking on my foot."
Even though test audiences were laughing at it, Brooks didn't like it and argued with Pryor about that line and had the line changed from foot to arm.
In the 80's, the arm line was in the movie when it was played on cable pay channels such as HBO, Cinimax, etc., but the line was cut from the movie when it went to VHS to where Madeline Kahn just repeats" It's true, It's true."
It's good to be da king!
Met Mel Brooks a few times over the years, a pure, 100% gentleman, a great guy. A giant of a man !!
Genius. Pure genius.
Actually, the cut bit is "baby, you're suckin' on my knee!" They filmed it but it didn't make the cut
So I guess Mel Brooks doesn't know what he's talking about
Christopher Taylor ...my knee my arm my elbow...Mel said my arm so am goin with what he said...
Blazing Saddles, one of my all time favorites.
Thank you Mel Brooks for Blazing Saddles Movie.
They sat Mel Brooks on a $12 folding chair?
+hoilst -what was w/ that?
+hoilst No, Mel came out with the chair, unfolded and sat in it on his own. He said that he always sat on that side (where the couch is) in every talk show and didn't feel like sitting there. Mel Brooks. Legend. That is all.
You can picture Clevon's deliver of that line
The first time I saw blazing saddles, I was a little kid. My cousin had a projector and screen and I watched it with my family in my uncles yard. I absolutely loved it but my cousin still can’t believe he showed it to me that young
Would of love to see Mel and Robin Williams work together
My favourite movie of all time is spaceballs I rarely laugh after watching a movie but spaceballs makes me laugh anytime I watch it
It's because the right side is dominate. Its a sign of respect from Conan.
Movie played here in Fort Worth on retro night . Every race was there . Great movie.
With or without the farts?
He told that story on Bob Costas' _Later_ 20+ years ago, but then he said the line was, "...you're sucking my elbow".
He's old, the scene is long lost, a guy can forget right?
the movie that made Gig Young crazy
Such a great line! wish it wasn't cut
They should have kept that scene. Classic!
deleted scene.
There are other scenes that I've seen on TV that were funny but deleted and I wish Brooks had kept them in, like the baptism scene.
+sha11235 what baptism scene!?!
If anybody deserved to live forever, it would be Mel Brooks. He is so hysterically funny!
Mel Brooks did Get Smart to. Yeah Buddy.
Mel served in the Army in WW2. I believe he was captured in the Battle of the Bulge.
There’s a large amount of people who never seen this movie which indicates they are too sensitive. I’m 22 Hispanic and I saw this movie when I was 17 and I still find it hilarious.
Could you imagine if Blazing Saddles was made today?! Think of all the sjws who would call for a boycott because of racial insensitivity!
Turbo9987
You guys really like to complain about nothing
Blazing saddles is satire
People can realize that
It's satire done right
It's not just jokes being offensive for the sake of being offensive
why the folding chair?
Right! Mel Brooks walks in.....give up your seat!
MY IDEA FOR A SHOW SERIES, I WANT (MR. MEL BROOKS) TO THINK ABOUT:
My suggestion idea, is to make (BLAZING SADDLES) into a show series, and I imagine it being based on the classic movie of (BLAZING SADDLES).
That random guy got to work with Hedy Lamarr. What a privilege.
PC Principal would not like this movie...
+Daniel Silveira - too bad...
De camptown races, brilliant.
Simple secret : " Work !, work !, work !. Immediately !, immediately !, immediately !....".
youtube ads are screwed up, conanne - It's NOT PLAYING the bleeping video
What a flick what a nostalgic flick it is
Does an unedited version of Blazing Saddles with all the deleted scenes exist?
Mel brooks. You made it ok to make fun of anybody. God bless you for making so many great movies!
Kocham tego Polaka z Białegostoku
My gods..... Solid gold.
I guess I haven't watched Conan in a while... But why is Mel Brooks sitting on a folding chair?
Conan did an extended interview with Mel Brooks for his internet show/series. In that interview, they talk about that. Mel just decided to come out with a folding chair and put it to Conan's left instead of sitting on the usual chairs.
Mel is a genius
one of my favorite movie
I liked the scene where they are eating beans and farting.
now that i think about it. all sounds lol
"Beanfest" was the chapter. Iconic. People who saw the movie in theatres say the laughter was so great that they couldn't hear the effects at all.
