It was refreshing that Mr & Mrs Smith aren't elite spies like James Bond or Ethan Hunt. John is naturally charming and loving but can't be cold when he has to be. Jane is very logical but socially incompetent. An elite spy knows when to use their heart or head, which John and Jane lack. Lastly, they failed their missions thrice because their toxic love for each other overcame their professionalism

My wife and I totally agree with you. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this episode. We also LOVED the entire season, but this episode was perfect.
Thank you for showcasing it. We've been talking about a rewatch...it is THAT good.
We are hoping to hear that they are going to be doing a Season Two. Not sure what would happen, but we WANT to see it.
We've also watched numerous interviews and heard that Donald Glover, Maya Erskine and the Showrunner, Francesca Sloane brought a LOT of their own experiences to the arguments (for all three are in marriages with others) and that is how the realism was integrated into the dialogue. Donald and Maya talked about starting the scenes from the script, but both of them come from Improv backgrounds...and they then allowed the arguments to be real and reactive. One would say one thing, then the other would pop off and say this, then it escalates, and so on.
Thank you for this video. We really appreciated your thoughts and exposing how AMAZING this episode was...again, thank you.

I finished the whole series over the weekend and watched the movie right after. The series was a compelling reimagining of the original while keeping a lot of what made the movie so memorable. The showrunners paid homage in big and small ways to the original so it was beautiful to see.
The series is a perfect reimaging because the portrayal of their marriage feels grounded and relevant to our times.
If they do make a season two, I hope they go the anthology route and have a whole new cast of characters.

Not sure on the anthology idea. Erskine and Glover’s chemistry is what made this series, and I think they would be what drove people to watch a season 2 if it’s greenlit the shows co creator already said they had an idea of what Season 2 would look like.

I could do an anthology after a few seasons. But not now. There’s still so much more to come from this one. The chemistry is the most important element and you don’t always find that. Donald and Maya are amazing character actors.

  • @lookitsann
    @lookitsann 3 месяца назад +37

This show was amazing! The depth of the characters, the balance between action scenes and emotional ones wer well done. The struggles that the couple faced were so hard to watch because of REAL it can be for people in real life, all of it stemming from insecurity, fear, and jealousy. When they opened their mouths, you could just feel their words and how human they were. And definitely, the CHEMISTRY between the leads, because omg, when it was light they were basically floating but once it got dark, it could be felt how heavy everything got. Anyways, I really like this show. Thanks for this extra detailed essay 🫶🏼

i think them tricking you into thinking this is gonna be some action spy thriller, which yea it does have a small scale spy stuff going on, but its actually a romcom at its core its genius in how they set up both the characters and the audience. I get why people are mixed on this show because its not action packed like the movie and believe me i avoid rom coms myself but they tricked me into watching and i love it.
The writing, cinematography, actors, its funny as hell, it gets serious as hell. I love it. i hope people dont care about the "mixed reviews" just give it a shot and be pleasantly surprised.

This episode is one of my favorites and I noticed the same thing you did with the color/tone and physical spacing of the characters it was absolutely brilliant. The argument scene between Jane and John in the woods was one my favorites of the season, especially because I knew Glover had said it was largely improvised. I also thought in a way that the feelings John had about being there for his mother and the conflict it caused the couple was art imitating real life since Glover actually lost his father in 2018 and I’m sure it touched some emotions for him. @BrainPilot I hope you breakdown the other episodes, I’m really enjoying these videos, well done.

The show is really amazing and would love to see another season come out of it since there are still a lot of unanswered questions left on the table and would really be interested on how Donald Glover would execute it. Some say it is slow but that is why its such a good show, to show real life marriage problems and also add in dark humor and fight scenes. They've obviously been doing quite a few more missions over time, & it isn't clear that it's been a few weeks. It could have been months. The body language & clothing choices definitely show the status of their relationship well. That said, while the marriage therapist had some insightful observations & redirections for them to communicate better, overall she really went off the rails with them. Really wish we saw better therapists in media; this kind of incompetence does happen, but showing it all the time keeps a lot of people who need it from considering it.

I think in general the action scenes are not the best in this series (choreographies, chameras, narrative, etc...) but the rest is perfect. And this episode works so well probably because is directed by Glover itself.

I dunno I get it but the end seems cheap. If it gets renewed they aren’t dead. If it gets canceled they are dead. It’s forcing a sequel just so people can know.

I just couldn't get into it. I don't hate the actors but the characters get on my nerves. This show is not for everyone and some may hate it for other reasons but for myself, I don't like shows when the characters you're supposed to like irritate you.

Enjoyed the original movie but highly disliked this series. For me, the relationship drama was excruciatingly painful, drawn out, long and boring. The bickering had me totally annoyed, and the counseling sessions took over a few episodes. Would love to have seen more action sequences, and more redeeming qualities from the main characters that made me want to root for them. At the end of the day I wanted them to break up and was rooting for them to just go away. I was totally uninvested and the only person I was really rooting for was Jon’s mom.

I don't like Mrs Smith at all. Makes the series really hard. She controlling, belittling and disrespectful. And a Black woman would not be deemed as worthy of love with that mess going on
