- Union Pacific's Coast Line is a rail line in the State of California connecting the San Francisco Bay Area to the Los Angeles Basin. Despite a robust history of train traffic, the Coast Line sees relatively light traffic in modern times, and this is reflected by relatively little fanfare compared to busier railroad lines.
This feature length film is a contemporary tour of a section of the Coast Line between the Salinas River Valley and Gaviota. Follow along as we go location by location with maps, historic photographs, lineside footage, and onboard footage. Filmed over a period of seven months in late 2016 and early 2017, this video is the most comprehensive film of the Coast Line ever produced!
You'll thrill to exciting scenes as trains tackle the steep grades and sharp curvature of Cuesta Pass, skirt along the farm fields of the Santa Maria Valley, and wind along the coast through Vandenberg Air Force Base. Along the way, you'll see train meets and special movements by both Amtrak and Union Pacific.
Join me as we tour this scenic and diverse rail line. This is a Railfanning Tour of Union Pacific's Coast Line!

In about 1977 I was coming back on 101. I saw the Amtrak at a station and wanted to get ahead of it to watch it. I caught it at carpinteria on a slight s curve about blew me out of my shoes!
Awesome work as always Stephen ! I thoroughly enjoyed the video and watched it in its entirety. This video's insightful information was of great benefit in aiding me for my recent railfanning trip out to the coast line. I would say the attention to details and well structured format made for one, if not the few best videos exhibiting this part of California's rail history and its components. This is definitely worth a like and I applaud you in your hard work and effort.
The main reason the Coast Line doesn't get much traffic these days is because of how curvy the line is. UP prefers to route north-south freights over the Fresno Sub because it's straighter, hence why the Central Valley is the prime area for railfanning in California.
Its actually also more of money cuz Coast sub for bridges and the overall location for tracks itself costs more than the fresno sub. If it goes thru the Valley, good luck going thru the Tehachapi pass on the Mohave sub.
Awesome job!
This is a great video. I never knew that Cuesta was so long . Must be fun to ride Amtrak thru here.
Nice Video I love all the S&HC!!!
Thanks for this video I love it I have the book Southern Pacific Coast route. It was written by John signor. The places you show I match up to his book
Awesome video!!!
Nice cinematography but should have called UP in California's central coast, as it only focuses on the middle of the route, with barely lip service to the rest.
4:44 sadly all of those trains except for a VERY occasional Baretable no longer Run on the coast, thankfully, what I heard UP is fixing all the tracks so we should see more action in the coming including possibly double stacks since stackers can fit in the chatsworth tunnels so the only need to do the tunnels north of Santa Barbara!
I was thinking that a lot of the frieght information could be described as "lol not anymore"
Let’s hope we do I’m getting tired of driving to LA just to see a stack train
Nice video
Trains are the must coolest
How familiar are you with the Shortline Santa Maria Valley Railroad?
I had a chance to meet the owner and watch some of their operations, but I never got in-depth into their history.
Excellent video
Do you see Parker 14:19?
Did you see lily in 8:55?
Men What You Use to Record Your Videos With ?
I use a Panasonic HC-VX870 4K Camcorder for video and a RØDE VideoMic for audio.
wow
Salam railfans INDONESIA
Hi
i got sound but no pic lol YT strikes again I gave up lol 2 hrs is too long I'm sore from trying too watch it lol
The first few seconds have no video. If you want to watch it in small chunks, you can always pause and come back to it later. Certain browsers like chrome will even remember where you left off if you close out.
Very good video, living on the coast (the Santa Barbara sub) I wish we could see more freight action
Very good video!
I used to live and work in Avila Beach and King City. Recall SP sugar beet trains and occasional military freights going to Camp Roberts carrying tanks and related equipment. Those were the days!
Great video! Cuesta Pass reminds me a lot of Franklin canyon. Would love to see trains on the coast sub!
Aww, home sweet home to me, great video
Loooooooove your video.
Great job on this video! Any plans to do a part 2 from Gaviota to LA?
Unfortunately, probably not. This video took me seven months to film and I have even less free time now than I did then. Glad you enjoyed it!
Would be cool to see a modern version of the coastline tour except from Gaviota to LA
