Only Mme Delacroix gets it. As a woman to have achieved something on your own in those times it's exceptional. Eloise hasn't built anything for herself from her own wits or talents, that's why she's telling her to drop it like it's nothing. I think it's not only jealousy, but inability to put herself in Pen's shoes. Eloise doesn't need the money and hasn't had the balls to pursue her passion for writing. Her and Benedict are too bent on perfection and their fear of failure that's why they've been procrastinating. Hard and constant work makes you better, but they're not doing it. That has made them bitter or depressed, wandering around directionless. I think once they find their purpose they might become less annoying to watch.

I don't understand why you feel for Cressida, who has done far worse, than for Penelope lol
Penelope was always cornered. She was forced to debut a year early, she had an abusive family, her father was disgracing their name than dies leaving them in debt AND she had no prospects of marriage bc society was cruel to her, they never even saw her.
Cressida is pretty, she comes from a rich family. Yes, her father is cruel, but that was mostly the norm. She had three years to make a match of her own. The only reason she didn't was bc she was more focused bringing others down than pursuing a match. She went after Penelope even, who wasn't competition. Just being cruel for fun. To feel better about herself. And society saw it. The reason no one married her so far is because no one likes her. Not even the men. She's pretty only on the outside. A classless cruel girl is no good either, but she chose to be cruel out in the open. Not even being discreet.
Penelope wrote about the cruelty of society because they all pretend and no one perceived her and then she found she had a voice. Cressida is using this to flee, and yes, I do feel for her, but she is reaping what she sowed. If she had been kind to Penelope, who was in a worse situation than her, perhaps now she would have an ally to aid her an escape. Cressida is ruthless in the same way, but with people who don't deserve it, who did nothing to her. Penelope used her pen to expose people but the gossip she gathered was because society gossiped in the first place, in front of her, because they never saw her. Yes, she went too far sometimes, but never without a reason, however misguised. She was also 17.
Eloise always enjoyed the gossip, so she was always hypocritical. So would be anyone else that bought the issues until it was about them. They all mocked Penelope when the secret with Colin got out. They do it out in the open. Penelope herself mocked her, because she had no self-love. And she only "went after" the Bridgertons to aid them. Even if there was a scandal, it was never something they couldn't handle. With Marina, she ruined more her family than theirs. With Eloise, she saved her before something worse could happen.

Yes, sometimes there are painful truths to tell. But she isn't needless cruelty

  •  3 месяца назад +21

Again, Penelope does not write just to be mean. She writes the truth. She has complimented many people in her issues since season 1 starting with Daphne, naming her the "Diamond of the Season", for the first time ever, up until this very season complimenting the young women who were in search of a husband... And you two fail to see that, which is a pity.
Penelope has always operated as LW to have a voice when everyone else ignored her and also give voice to others.
Yes, truth can hurt at times and she has also exposed what others say, however, the most "ruinous" things she's written has been out of protecting the very people she wrote about (remember when she didn't even mention Theo the printer boy and only said she was getting out unchaperoned with 'political radicals', which was considered to be the truth because of the meetings she was going to as well). She did NOT ruin Eloise because she did not want to. That's why everyone forgot about Eloise with time.
Cressida's situation is not good, to be sure. However, she always been a bully to people for no reason, so it is understandable for Pen to feel aggravated watching Cressida take credit for her work while being mean in her(?) writing.
So I don't defend Cressida. Love the drama, though. 🤣

Pen took the leap BEING the writer and putting in that work, and taking that risk, even when her mom never had her back and you weren’t impressed by that but when Cressida does it WITHOUT putting in the years of work, it’s impressive? Lady Danbury’s issue with her brother could be resolved by a conversation, you’re so right lol. But I actually liked that they showed her being vulnerable/petty when it came to her own brother. I feel like that’s very true to real life. We can be very good at giving others advice, but not so good at taking it when it comes to our personal lives. She’s such a powerful character, I think it’s a good balance to see that she can still be really human. It seems like Marcus was favored by their father because he was a boy which was probably something that built up resentment between them. They probably weren’t very close to begin with, but then when he told their father about her plan to run away that soured their relationship and it sounds like after she married she hasn’t seen a lot of him. So I can understand how the grudge lingered for so long; but yeah. Time to end it. Just talk to the man.

I won’t be morality police on Penelope or cressida in this situation. For pen the column was the only way she could have a voice or some control in her fate when she was overlooked by society & mocked by a ton full of hypocrites who also constantly gossip. Cressida is in a situation with zero power. Yes she could have been nicer & that may have changed her fate but it’s not her fault she has no say over being sold off to a man 3 times her age. Of course she is scared and looking for a way to protect herself. Her and Pen are similar in that women of that time who were unmarried had zero say in their lives and were controlled by the expectation of others. The difference is Penelope doesn’t set out to hurt ppl (she has never written anything in whistledown that was a lie) while Cressida does.
Childhood trauma is still valid regardless of the time that has past. There are things that happen ppl suppress or think they have moved past until something triggers them. Agatha has been living a happy life and the arrival of her brother after years, maybe decades, has brought up old wounds. That is completely valid, and if she feels she can’t trust her own brother then obviously she wouldn’t want him involved with one of her best friends, the daughter of the man she loved.
Portia is absolutely a product of her circumstances. She raises her children the way she was raised & teaches them what she was taught. While yes with the solicitor coming after them I definitely think she wants the bridgerton connect as some kind of protection. I do believe she is genuinely happy for Penelope. She never had a love match so to see that her daughter has one has definitely warmed her. And having Colin call her out for overlooking how special pen is has made her realize that while she was doing her best, she fell short and I think she actually wants to make up for that.
Honestly, Eloise has always been a bit of a hypocrite and self serving. That isn’t new. In s2 pen found out from the maid Eloise was sneaking off to see Theo & go to “political rallies.” Eloise didn’t tell her until she was confronted yet she judged pen for keeping secrets. She is also now keeping the secret of whistledown from Colin and asking Pen to lie to him. This episode is the first time we see Eloise take any accountability for the fact that pen warned her not to see Theo or search for whistledown and she ignored it, putting herself, Theo and her family at risk. And Cressida was right bc some of Eloise issue IS jealousy bc Pen created something for herself that affects the masses while Eloise only talks about changing the world.

Constantly making Penelope into the villain no matter what happens, when you’re literally watching her season was crazy. She’s not evil. She’s a 20 year old girl who writes what she hears. There would be no whistledown if the Ton was not such a mean spirited group who spreads gossip, and Penelope hears it because she’s so invisible. There was no grace given once to her, yet you rooted for Cressida when she was literally a mean bully the entire 2 seasons and this beginning of the season?? And then y’all agreeing with lady featherington’s speech!! Agreeing that “women don’t have dreams they have husbands” and not having ANY sympathy for what Penelope was feeling because y’all hate her so much was CRAZY. The thing about Penelope and Cressida is that they are both very different products of a very similar environment. Penelope reflects the cruelty she experiences in her home life & by the hands of the ton by being Lady Whistledown, and Cressida reflects the cruelty in her household by being a bully. Both characters are starved for any semblance of power, and lash out as a response to the powerlessness they experience on the daily. An underlying theme in the show is the lack of power women experience in their everyday lives, and how that can lead them to make decisions that, without proper context, are seen as bad or less than agreeable. Cressida takes credit to save herself from that hell of a marriage, and i do not blame her one bit. Pen is rightfully angry that someone who has spent the better part of the last 3 years bullying her is trying to take credit for her legacy. Even then, after Eloise talks to her, she DOES stop writing. The only reason she picks up the pen again is to make sure the same mistakes she made when she first started writing, aren't repeated in Cressida taking over the column. She says so herself in her conversation with Eloise, when she states that she should have been using LW to empower others. She is learning from her mistakes, and ultimately is growing from them.
    (episode 7 discussion)
In the beginning of ep 7, it is demonstrated how the power that LW has, in the wrong hands, can be ruinous. If Pen chose to write the same way Cressida's mom did, all empty speculation and lies, it would be disastrous. Ultimately, the whole starting scene of ep7 serves as a reminder that A. Pen is very good at what she does, as people can immediately tell which one is the real WD B. People can tell who the real Whistledown is because she reflects the truth, rather than speculation, and C. LW is very powerful, and whether we like it or not, that is a LEGACY that Pen built no matter how anyone feels about it. Even if it is pride she is feeling, is she not entitled to it? Women of the time in high society could not become authors or writers, or do anything they desired other than become mothers and wives for that matter. She has built something from the ground up, and while she has made mistakes, she has demonstrated a lot of growth this season. I feel very deeply for Penelope. I also feel very deeply for Cressida. The big difference between the two is one happened to get a lucky break and the other didn't.

The only difference between Pen and Cressida in my opinion is Pen seeing and being around a positive example of a supportive family like the Bridgetons. Cressida is a product of her environment. She has said cruel things, but I do believe she can learn to be different. When her back is against the wall she goes back to doing whatever she needs to do to save herself like she was taught. Imagine if she really knew how she had to make those babies with that man. She would've done worse if needed. 🤷🏽‍♀️
The seamstress just wanted her to keep doing what she loved.
Also Lady Danbury has always meddled. It's what she does.

Loving the reactions this season. Am so glad y'all finally see Eloise's self righteousness....
I get Pen not wanting to give up Whistledown...she is a working woman of the ton who has created something for herself. Plus she always writes the truth, its just her delivery that is not okay...but she should continue writing...gossip sells...Lady Whistledown shapes opnions of the ton even the queen's actions are sometimes influenced by her...that is power.

When you guys do your analysis, you really need to take the time period into consideration. You have to think she was sold off to her husband at a very young age and went to be with him and live with him, which once she was of age, which was still relatively young. Also, she's much older than her brother as well. So she would have been long gone and had her own home and children. It's not the same as like how it is now, where the woman can come and go as they please. In our day and age, that could have been a simple conversation, but it hers, not quite as such.
Also, I know you keep saying that Penelope can just write other stuff like books and novels etcetera but that is also not the case. Even women like Jane Austen had to publish under pseudonyms. It was scandalous and could be ruinous to a lady of high standing. Even Jane Austen didn't get the level of fame she has today until after her death.

Nuance is a constant theme in Bridgerton. It’d be great to see you all try to lean into that more when forming beliefs and opinions on the show, it seems very black and white. Makes sense in some situations but less when you consider the time period and the decisions women had to make (or quite literally couldn’t) in order to survive. Penelope likely wouldn’t have found an outlet or a voice in Lady Whistledown growing up in the Bridgerton household - they were privileged in a way most people could not possibly relate to.

10:30 It's terribly sad that just because of society Penelope isn't allowed to keep the business she built for herself. I would be devastated too if I had to give up my passion and hard-earned work. I would also be furious if my bully took credit for my hard work. Pretty interesting how Cressida and Eloise gets sympathy when they both got themselves into trouble, but Penelope who's tried to just build something of her own, by telling the truth - not petty lies like Cressida - gets made fun of.

I feel for Cressida on some level because she is a spoiled, pampered only child who has never been given the reason or the motivation to be kind to other people, and she is suddenly reaping the consequences of her parents’ poor choices in her upbringing. However she is a also a grown woman with very little agency of her own, desperate for any amount of it. The saddest part is that had she been kind to Penelope, it is very possible that Penelope would have used Whistledown to boost Cressida or at least to call out Mr. Cowper for being so cruel as to revoke his daughter’s dowry just because she isn’t married by 21.

People hating on Pen/LW or acting like it isn't a HUGE accomplishment to have published (and found customers for) your writing as a woman back then blows my mind!
The word "gossip" was demonized by people (men) who didn't want women knowing what was going on in the world, or working together.
Pen as a bullied, invisible child, forced into society early, took information that oftentimes only men, leaders, or the help world know and opened it up for everyone.
Viewing "gossip" negatively was always a way to keep women in the dark.
She made missteps along the way, but the 2 biggest, most ruinous things she wrote about anyone other than herself were from a place of trying to save the 2 people she loves most from far worse fates than temporary embarrassment.
Eloise (and viewers) not 100% understanding that LW fully saved her from the queen's ire is ridiculous imo... that and her not knowing her lifelong bestie loved Colin since forever are my biggest gripes about the character, maybe any Bridgerton character actually...

I’m with you on Cressida. She was terrible but I think she’s also a product of a society that pits women against each other to vie for men’s attention. She was a corned animal and lashed out in a way she thought best. I don’t have a “team” in this fight either tbh. I’m a girl’s girl so I wanted them all to win and be happy 😂 I love Penelope and want her to have it all, I want Eloise to grow more and reflect (I think she’s like me and is often so entrenched in her own views that she comes off judgmental and condescending), and I want Cressida to have her freedom and the love of true friendship and pure relationships that she’d been robbed of for so long and obviously craves.

It's sad, they used Cressida to only bring Eloise back to Pen. Cressida lost the only "friend" she had. Eloise hasn't become a better friend to anyone really, she's still self-absorbed and jealous. She now wants LW to write again to save her after she wanted her to retire? Make up your mind. Violet had trouble connecting with Francesca because she's different than the rest of the family, I think she just doesn't get her. I remember her being hurt saying that she just got back from her auntie and she wants to leave again. I get Francesca wanting her own home, peace and quiet after growing up with 7 siblings, that has to be chaotic.

We caught a glimpse of her home life , her parents are questionable and she’s ambitious, and young and she knows what she wants and there’s nothing wrong with that. I gave her plus points this series for befriending Elouise when she needed someone, that was big for me. She’s not completely bad, not good either. One of my favourite antagonists ☺️

It’s not necessarily the fact that you dislike Pen/LW. It’s more to do with your disproportionate harshness towards complex female characters. (More towards Mikel-Claire) You give them little to no grace. We saw this towards Kate in S2 and now Pen. The only female characters you liked were quite one dimensional and to some extent flat. Whilst in comparison the male characters have more space to be controversial. You always use cruelty as your reason but cruelty has been exhibited by both genders.
However, I am not surprised as a lot of your criticism reflect your traditional mindset and how view the different genders. I hope more nuance and an open mind approach is adopted but either way you two seem to be enjoying the show.
