I'm a Canadian Navy vet and I was there a few months before and a few months after the military bus attack.
I spent 4 months in '79 (Feb-to Jun), and 4 mons. in '80 (Feb to Jun) in Puerto Rico. I knew many people from Cieba to San Juan ...Americans and locals . I heard stories from both sides and no-one at the grassroots level, even the military types I knew from "Roossevelt Roads Naval Base", believed that the US Gov't was right to do what they were doing.. And that the bus attack was basically, the US govt.s fault.

The matching of the fingerprint was like "Christmas come early." Considering what we know about law enforcement and government corruption from this era I am not sure what to believe here.
Descriptions of the island's politics are a little one sided

Well....this is awkward....Puerto Rico is not a foreign country. It is a U.S. territory since 1898 and it's people are U.S. citizens since 1917. So.......there's that.

Hi. It is bitter sweet what has happened in Puerto Rico. The U.S. invaded P.R. in 1898 wich was at the time colonized by Spain. Spain surrendered P.R. the following year. The idea of the U.S. making this move was because of the strategic location of the island (this came into play durring the Cuban missle crisis). Allthough the reasoning was for territory it made P.R. U.S.. citizens in 1917 just in time for it to draft and deploy puertoricans to help end the first world war as a part of the U.S. army. Puerto Rico later became a "commonwealth state" and has lopsided benefits such as being ruled under federal jurisdiction or citizens in armored forces going to war but not being able to vote for it's president nor have voting representation in congress. P.R. has risen in modernization and is the envy of other islands around it cuz of the U.S. citizenship but is also mocked by others for it's colonial status. It is one of the oldest colonies in the world today. Truth is there is a large part of islanders that would like it to become a state but as the years pass by (especialy in recent years since hurricane Maria devastated the island and the U.S. response was hesitant and full of promises but little action to repair the electric grid) the number of statehood seekers has dwindeled. The problem is that durring all the years of colonialisim P.R.'s options of functioning as an independent country looks unstable. All of these things usualy get swept under the rug cuz it would be a bad look if it happened. I was born and partialy raised in New York but later moved here to P.R. and it's getting tougher each year.
Update on the doc. In 2005 the Fbi located Filiberto Ojeda In the town of Hormigueros P.R. there was a shootout and Ojeda was struck and fell at his doorstep. He lay bleeding for nearly two hours until he died. No medical attention was given. The operation took place on a celebrated aniversary of the indepependent movement in P.R. (Sept. 23). The Fbi stated that they did not want to put agents at risk while Ojeda was still alive but civil rights movements condem the killing because medical attention could of had been provided and Ojeda might of been taken alive.

@@jacabi19 I’m sort of guessing you’re of Puerto Rican descent, I agree on all you said, except for one part, being a citizen of the most powerful and influential country in our era surely has its share of benefits which is mainly the reason why most Puerto Ricans don’t want independence after all, they don’t want to let go of such a benefit and be stuck in the island, but saying that others feel envy of you guys is something that I’ve only heard from Puerto Ricans, you guys have the illusion that others envy you because of your status as US citizens lol.

Located in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, these islands are defined as "insular areas," which is a generic term used to describe a jurisdiction that is neither a part of one of the several States nor a Federal district. (Washington DC is not a state, it's full name is actually the "Commonwealth of Washington, District of Columbia". Unlike the 50 states, U.S. territories also do not have the same representation in Congress and do not have the same rights as states. What baffles me is USA holds onto Peurto Rico, but is not trying to annex Canada. Canada is much more valuable & similar to USA than Puerto Rico. 1st USA Constitution had an open invitation for Canada to join & USA tried to conquer Canada in War of 1812. Without US Spainish War, Puerto Rico would probably be an part of Spain & EU.
