Wow looked like everything was going so well and then Sods law decided to play its nasty hand.
Thing is with sailing is what does not kill you makes you stronger and wiser, when you get into port find out from who you use to get the boom fixed why it was most likely to happen and what you can do to prevent it in the future.
Your angst was obvious but don't let a disappointment set you back or dampen your enthusiasm.
Your episodes are going from strength to strength.
take care and fair winds guys, now that you got that out of the way hopefully you will have some plain sailing coming your way.

Bring on sailing round the Canary Islands! We are ready!

    Anatomy of a Disaster:
9:21 "The wind is coming DIRECTLY behind us".
And so, another episode of Discovery's Channel starts :-)
9:33 (looking up) "You can expect the boom to come flying over any second". Premonition? :-) Still doing nothing? Lack of experience?
    9:38 "All good" :-D
9:41 "Ta-naa! Great!" :-D You gotta love these reactions. My heart skipped some beats all the three times we had an uncontrolled gybe.
10:05 "[a number of times] ...we've unexpectedly gybed. Which I'm sure is not good for the boom". Hm... you think? Still doing nothing. ;-) Worried about the dog's bowel movements more than the crashing boom. Ok...
11:14 "I just put a safety line on the boom" How about properly(!) rigging a preventer -as in yesterday?
12:38 "We just had a bit of a boom incident" Who would have thought?? Still content with a line tied to a stanchion, I see.
19:44 "How was that even possible?"
Love your candid videos and your humor!
Enjoy your adventures and keep us posted of your enterprise. Thank you for the channel.
    Fair winds and smooth seas!

Alexandru! You can't imagine the grins on our faces! You are totally right! We would love to say we are sea gypsies with a crystal ball but we can not tell a lie! Inexperience was the key. We look back at our crossing with a lot of fond memories now though...surprisingly! We'd also love to say we're not as dopey these days...But again... we can not tell a lie 😅 Thanks for watching! Love Amy, Martin and Bam Bam

Yowch, good to see the spoiler alert. As to why the boom snapped, probably the earlier unexpected gybes put some serious stress on that point (looks like it's the point that would slam into a stay), and the combination of preventer on the boom tip plus that gust of wind just was the last drop in the bucket.

Yep. There should also be a strong point at the end of the boom often marked "Preventer" for attaching a line to the boom. The boom can be subject to significant forces (especially during an accidental gybe) and a preventer line attached just anywhere can snap it. Glad to hear that you're ok and that the damage wasn't any worse.

Sorry to hear about the boom guys but great that you made it and are back on a positive path!
As others have said, it is quite likely that the way you rigged the boom preventer caused the boom to break there. We have have heard of booms breaking in cases like this many times.
There can be a huge amount of force in an accidental gybe, especially with a lot of mainsail up, which is why some care is needed in rigging a preventer. One of the most important points being to attach the preventer at the end of the boom and then go forward to a strong point on the bow of the boat to provide the most strength. Here is an article which goes through the details and has some good ideas:
