When I was in 3rd grade, we had an end of the year party where everyone had to bring some type of food or drink. My Mom made Lumpia which to me was super common at our house. I was embarrassed and asked my Mom “Please , Mom can I just bring a bag of Doritos and a 2 litre of Pepsi?” Of course she said no so I went to school with a tray of Lumpia and to my surprise no one laughed at me, the just ate all of it. Then my teacher pulled me aside and asked me to ask my Mom for the recipe.

I grew up in a large Filipino community in California & was neglected so, my lunchbox was filled with lumpia or siopao from pur landlady Corey or my Filipino neighbors. Filipinos won't let a kid go hungary no matter who's kid.
As a Filipino, I can confirm that. Not only that, everyone must be in the dining table before we start the meal. The family must be whole in the dining table no matter the situation even if you're in a fight.
I remember during my elementary days i have a pink lunch box. Usually my baon is rice and sunny side up egg, sometimes rice and salted egg While others have fried chicken or purefoods hotdog for lunch 😘❤️ But i am proud of my mother, she's a tough mom. I was just 6 yrs.old when my father died and my mom raised us all by herself. #lunchbox #happythoughts #childhoodmemories
In the province, during 1980's to early 90's we don't used lunch box. We used banana leaves to wrapped our lunch. The banana leaves gave a pleasant aroma to the food. Miss those days😍😄
My mom told me her parents were very busy when she was younger. They had no time to pack her lunch for her often times because they had to leave very early for work. She can't cook dishes at that time and only knew how to cook rice. What she did, she spread the very hot steaming rice on the clean banana leaf, put 1 or 2 eggs (uncooked, shell cleaned) in the middle and wrapped it all up. By lunch time at school, the egg will become like soft boiled. If she doesn't like soft boiled, she will crack the egg (for it to cook better by lunch time) still in the middle of the very very hot rice, put some salt, sometimes she will add bagoong.
Boiled cassava with sugar for dipping😳 when my seatmates tasted it, i was surprised they want to bought it☺ i realized there's nothing to be ashamed of as long as your mom prepared your food with love and care ❤
Oh memories. When I moved to the U.S. I remember bringing mongo to school. Yup kids made fun. So never did it again. Until Senior year when I realized my Mom's left overs were much better than school cafeteria crap. Started bringing in Corn Beef, Apritada, Adobong manok, Kaldereta, Menudo. I just stopped caring what the other kids would say. That's when I made friends with other Asian kids, and we just started sharing stuff. Learned to eat Korean food, Bulgogi, Bi Bim Bap, Japchae. And mind you this is back in the early nineties. So culinary awareness was not a thing yet. These days though when ever I'm in town my 12 year old nephew begs me to make pinoy food to take to school cause his friends get jealous when they see home cooking. How times change.
i used to make my own lunch back in highschool (2009-2011), met my bestfriends Pilipino who grew up here in Toronto coz of that. i bring bulalo and rice in a thermos or other Pilipino stew. Then we all gather in one table in the cafeteria we share and exchange food. And now its the same in my work this just brings memories back
I usually put my lunch box in my bag. Once I experience in school that after I put out my tupperware with lots of rice, I reach out for my ulam within my bag, then I realize, I just left it at home. :( What I did was, in the canteen we usually have a free soup, so its a good thing you're friends with them, filipino generosity as always. So that's the first time I realize I could have a daily soup that is out of my baon from my nanay. Funny but real story of mine that gets me thinking out of the box really... :)
Nelly related and reacted genuinely with jokoys jokes! She seems in tune with the filipino culture, having some similarities with Bosnia! Thats why sometimes you feel at home here !
Just to let you know that it is NOT embarrassing bringing your lunch inside an ice cream box thing in Public Schools. In fact almost 60% kids in the ph use it. No one is gonna judge you about your lunchbox. They're only gonna judge you on what is inside your lunchbox
In Primary school, My best friend's grandmother aways provided my lunch along with her granddaughter and we would always share lunches together. And all of my foreign friends would trade their lunches as well, it made me appreciate world cuisines at such a young age. When I reached High School I had to prepare my own "baon" meaning having to wake up at 5:30 every morning, get the rice cooker on and start cooking some Tocino or Hotdog. It certainly was a big adjustment 😂😂😂
Not to brag but being raised by a single dad, I had a variety of food in my lunchbox. From Goldilocks cinnamon rolls, cheesy ensaymada, puto, Hi-C Orange, suman, or homemade chicken sandwich. But my favorite was the sweet pan de sal with sugar and margarine or condensed milk as filling. I didn't care much for Star rice 😂
I love Jokoy's infamous "Vicks" series. I also trade my "baon" or pack lunch with my classmates way back elementary. Mom sometimes just give me money so I would buy food in canteen or will trade my money to my classmate. But mostly pack lunch was a good trade. Usually, tocino, fried chickens and other fried food. Loveyou both and peanut.
