      With all due respect - Here in South Louisiana, we recently put our kids into a Baptist Academy. It's a private Baptist Christian school but NOT Catholic. Such a better move for our family. I know they are learning about God (in school and in our Baptist Church. We also LOVE to listen to First Baptist Atlanta on RUclips. Y'all would love it! They show their 10:30 Sunday Service on their RUclips channel) in the correct way. They are receiving a real and solid education, but none of the hoorah in SO many schools these days. We tried homeschooling, but it wasn't feasible with both of us working 12-18 + hours in our Law Enforcement jobs (My fiancé is a Law Enforcement Officer, and I am a 911 Dispatcher in New Orleans/South Louisiana). Also, Louisiana stands with the people of California during this horrid fire bit. God had E-NOUGH.

    So I have been watching you since I was a kid and I am not a mother and not near to being one but I have to admit something. I didn’t know anyone growing up who was homeschooled and always has had a negative opinion on it. And while I do think there are people who homeschool for the wrong reasons, you opened my eyes a lot and I do have less of a biased towards it now because of your video.

    I am almost at the end of the homeschooling years, my kids are teens and one is soon to graduate. There is a "side effect" of homeschooling I don't often see talked about, at least in my sphere of the internet. We have befriended many homeschool families over the years, witnessed it first hand, but I was still shocked to find how much my husband and I relish time with our teens and more shockingly, they feel the same way about us. We love nothing more than time together as a family. Now that my kids are older, their sense of humor has matured, our conversations have deepened and our sense of connection to each other is even stronger. We just generally love each other's company and always have. Having spent time with other homeschool families and their older/grown kids, it's now easy for me see that homeschooling can bond families like no other experience. I was not homeschooled, had no plans to homeschool and up until I was one myself, had never met a homeschool family. I had no idea families could interact like this, be this close and certainly as a teen myself never envision this kind of relationship with my parents. All this to say, at the very minimum, you are placing your family on a course of action that comes with a high probability of strong family bonds. And that ain't nothin to sneeze at.

      @@DierdreV that’s so beautiful! 🥹 I love that! We found the quiet time while they were at school kinda nice for focused time to work, but at the same time, we found ourselves missing them and wanting more time together. I think that’s the biggest blessing to have your children grow up and want to come spend time with you. That’s so sweet.

      My fiancé and I recently stopped homeschooling b/c of our demanding Law Enforcement careers (He is a police officer/SWAT COMMANDER, and a K9 Officer, and I am a 911 Dispatcher/Swimming/CPR Instructor/Gun Range Instructor - first responders), and because our kids were NOT thriving in the homeschooling world. We recently enrolled our 2 in a Baptist Christian Academy here in our area. They are doing so much better. So, on the whole, homeschooling has its pros and cons. As long as the children are getting the proper education, and their faith is also guaranteed, it's better.

    Hey Rachel, I have been following you for over a decade now, and you've been my biggest inpiration growing up be it self-care, lifestyle, relationship, homemaking, etc. I admire you so so much.
    I'm an Indian, I was a software engineer who turned to homemaker recently to build and raise my family. I have been thinking a lot about homeschooling lately (although I dont have any kids yet, I'm expecting one rn) and I'm so glad to see you embarking this journey,, again I have you as an inspiration in this area too... Thank you for sharing it with us 💖💖
    You are a wholesome person, love you always...... ❤💐
    Edit: Also, I have been a home tutor for Science, maths and computer for 7 years, I have a pretty good understanding of children's psychology and I strongly believe homeschooling, if done with the right resources, quality social interactions and activities, would be enough for overall development of the kids.

  • @blah6809
    @blah6809 23 дня назад +16

    Don't be intimidated by the negative comments, you are doing the right thing for your kids! And the fact that you are willing to take on what many people see as a huge burden or inconvenience (homeschooling) in order to protect your kids and set them up for a better future, makes both of you amazing parents in my opinion! My husband was public schooled his whole life, I was homeschooled my whole life, and so we both see the pros and cons to both. Years ago I think homeschooling was one option among many, but now, it feels like every day there are more and more reasons that homeschooling is becoming the only option! (Also, my parents constantly got asked about how their kids were going to get socialized and I 100% agree with you! Growing up, my interactions with peers in sports, scouts, homeschool groups, etc. was WAY more positive and healthy then what a lot of my friends were dealing with in public school. I was able to have friends and do fun things, but avoided a lot of the peer pressure, drama, bad habits, and bullying that sadly my friends were dragged into. I also did not have all that drama and peer pressure associated with learning, because my learning environment was at home - safe, calm, and drama free. Where as a lot of my friends were so stressed about the drama going on at their school, they were not doing well in their studies and to this day have a lot of stressful associations with learning. And for those that say "you can't protect your kids forever, some day they will have to deal with certain types of people". I agree, BUT, I think we SHOULD protect our kids while they are KIDS, and are developing, and learning, and figuring out who they are. So that they can grow strong roots and be able to stand against anything once they are older!)
    Also, for those wondering how I fared being homeschooled my whole life. When I turned 18 years old I joined my local rescue squad, obtained my EMT and started my first job working as a technician in an Emergency Department. Went to college and obtained 3 degrees in 4 years (Associates in Occupational Therapy, Bachelors in Health Sciences and Occupational Therapy). Graduated with 4.0 GPA/high honors, was part of two honor societies, was asked to give a speech at a future honor society induction ceremony, and was selected to attend a prestigious International Delegation on Science & Medicine in Australia. My teachers loved me, I made lots of friends wherever I went, worked part time at the college bookstore (to help pay my tuition), was made a CPR instructor & trainer at my rescue squad, and asked to be a preceptor to new hires in the Emergency Department. At 19 I used the money I was earning from working and saved up to begin traveling. I traveled all over Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Indonesia, to name a few. Moral of the story, homeschooling is not a disadvantage, in fact I found it to be a huge advantage not only in the "real world" but also in college. I had not yet experienced the stress of what "learning" was in public school systems. I also loved to read and had not lost my curiosity or enthusiasm for learning. I honestly thrived going to college (a place I had chosen to go in order to learn about a topic that interested me). Also, neither of my parents were college educated, but they cared about their kids and their education and so they self taught and relied on good curriculum and homeschooling resources. Sorry, for the long comment, but I hope this encourages you!

      @@blah6809 This comment was seriously so encouraging, and I completely agree with your entire sentiment. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your story here! In the beginning, I saw public school as an opportunity to teach and encourage resilience through some tough situations with peers, but honestly, it became too much, and just overwhelmingly distracting and upsetting.. such a shame!

    As I mentioned before under the previous video, homeschooling is not very popular in Poland where I live. The school system is getting worse each year, but mostly because of the government, and not teachers (thank God!). In general both schools and studies are free in Poland, and you can find really good ones without spending a penny. But if one decides on pushing homeschool, they receive a financial support from the state. I wonder if that’s the case as well in the USA? Or in Tennessee at least?

    • @racheltalbott
      @racheltalbott  23 дня назад +7

      Yes, I hear you, and I totally agree. I was homeschooled too. I needed a tutor for some high school classes, and had to take some remedial courses before college, but I ended up excelling in college and had a high GPA. For now, I'm taking it one year at a time. Public school scares me nowadays, as it seems more dangerous. It's concerning that many parents aren't taking responsibility not only for their child's education but also for their mental health and well-being.
      It was truly disturbing to hear some of the things my kids would report to me about what was said and done at school, and unfortunately schools can only do so much about it. 😔

      Homeschooling isn't possible in Sweden as you have "mandatory school", skolplikt.
