With regard to the dead-ness of doornails: It was quite common in history for metal components to be re-used, and the Middle Ages are no exception. Iron nails were often pulled out when a building was destroyed, and applied elsewhere. But the artisanry of doors at the time meant that the nails needed to be pounded until flush with the surface. This bend meant the nail had no other usage from that point on, and had to be melted down. The doornail was dead.
