    I homeschooled 6 children and used this book for each of them. I found another great book to help them learn to sit for the lessons and also to build the skills needed to begin reading. It’s called Getting Ready to Read by Julie Shaffer. It works hand in hand with this book.

Right now, she is now able to read a few textbooks. Not just that, she is a superb speller also. What’s even more exciting is she can writes sentences today. I have been a reading teacher in public schools for 32 years. I have taught this program for years and actually worked for SRA as a trainer training public school teachers to use it. I noticed that the child was giving the unvoiced th sound as in thank instead of the voiced sound as in this. The unvoiced sound has not been introduced at that point.

    How did you get her to focus so well? My 4 year old has been wanting to learn to read for over a year but has a lot of trouble focusing on these lessons. We're on lesson 9 now. I've tried making it more fun and engaging but that seems to be more distracting than anything. At least we are finally getting somewhere but we're still almost as frustrated as before we had this fabulous book.

    • @herbanhomestead
      @herbanhomestead  4 года назад +1

      I went very slow with her, and she was the one who insisted on doing “reading lessons”. She was the child who told me she didn’t want to do kindergarten unless she was learning to read. I think it was a mixture of these easy lessons and her drive to read that made it work so well. She is a voracious reader now. I appreciated the short lesson style because it still made these early school years gentle. Good luck! If she has the drive to read it will happen. (As a comparison, my other daughter didn’t start reading well until almost second grade, and she still doesn’t enjoy reading as much. Everyone is different!) 💛

    • @AmyMcLean
      @AmyMcLean 4 года назад

      @@herbanhomestead Thank you! That helps.
      Mine is usually excited about it, and happily tells people she "has to do her reading lesson" until it actually comes time to do it... Then she bounces around, crawls under the table, stares off in other directions, pretty much anything except look at the sounds I'm pointing at. I told her to spin around between sections but then the spinning turned into dancing and wandering. You get the picture.
      I actually showed her this video of you and your daughter and she asked to do another lesson (2nd in one day) just like how you guys did it. We cuddled on the sofa and she focused for a while. We didn't finish the whole thing and I didn't ask her to finish, but she said she'd "behave" and for the most part she did. We'll see now if this new behavior is lasting or fickle. I think she was excited seeing that other kids were enjoying the lessons and that more challenging stuff is coming, the early stuff is almost too easy for her.
      Thank you for posting this and for sharing your experience!

  • @JulianeBella
    @JulianeBella Год назад

    Yikes! For those tasks the child is not supposed to read the words the fast way. They are supposed to sound it out saying the sounds without stopping. Practice blending is important as the skill transfers over to many other readings in the future and you don’t want to encourage memorization of words.
    I highly recommend covering the pictures and following the comprehension questions. It really spurs great conversations with my students and it gets them thinking. You are basically modeling how they should ask themselves questions to analyze texts and comprehend it. Though they don’t realize that’s what’s happening 😊
    She’s doing great by the way. She’s very smart. I comment only because I work with struggling readers and with them you really can’t get away from the recommended steps as described because it’s harder for them to pick it up otherwise.
    Congrats on your progress with your student!
