Yes it is sad that many of these men were lost to aids.they were the trailblazers.their courage brought the gay community to where it is today.sadly and unfairly they did not live to see gay marriage legalized.they helped to bring that about.may they all rest in peace.
I was there for 2 nd time. Was in Senior year of College and I just moved to West Village where everything was happening. I met Harry Berry, of the Islander's Club who invited me out for the weekend. I remember being told to be careful because Hepatitis B was circulating there. I remember great pot and taking midnight water taxi with Harry to Ice Palace in Cherry Grove for a really trippy night of dancing. I would take my 1st house 2,3,& 4 years later in Cherry Grove. Magical Nights, Years, & Memories. First time in Pines was 1974. I met a Designer at Continental Baths returning from my Sophmore College Summer abroad. He invited me to Carmen Miranda Party hosted by George Paul Rossell, who later became event planner at Studio 54. Lots of Stunningly Handsome Guys, everywhere. If you were not on Fire Island, you missed the greatest parties, music, fashion, & sex. It was the '70's don't forget.
So the Pines was always a wealthy area - I'm amazed at how empty it was at that time. My parents used to bring us to Cherry Grove - my mom loved how that gay men made up their houses and she loved the quaintness of the community. Here we were, hetero parents and us six kids, walking around Cherry Grove. I was 5-10 years old....little did I know......!!!!
was it 76 or 77 I was at some party some drunk was bothering the bartender and I told him "hey knock it off jerk" and later a friend said "oh I didn't know you know calvin klein" and my goodness I gasped. then, next time I was in new york I was introduced to him at the saint (or was it flamingo) and told him that story and we laughed and he apologized. how's that for cool. hope he still is
same party I met grace jones at. now THAT was cool. she loved it when it when I told her a few months earlier I'd been one of the guys who'd gotten up and danced with her in a jockstrap onstage at cabaret after dark in san francisco
Sadly, no one knew what was just a few years away. RIP to so many that didn’t make it🙏. We’ve never forgotten you.

If I was of adult age in the 70's, oh how I would've loved hanging out at Fire Island!
The freedom of the 70s and Barry Manilow too 😍😛
Yes and pat ast.i have heard of her.
Yes, the 70s were a good time. But as for Barry Manilow and also the fashions...., well, every decade has its mistakes.
A fabulous moment in time. Youth and innocence.
Hope all these beautiful men are still alive and thriving ❤️

I was a junior in high school. Moved to San Francisco in 1980
If they only knew what was already silently circulating amongst them by this time. So sad.
