A " Sniper " is either a Infantry Soldier or Marine or Special Operator , as an Expert Rifleman, sent to Sniper School, Who learns Marksmanship, Reconnaissance, Stalking , and Intelligence Collection , while a " Designated Marksman" , is more likely , an Infantry Soldier or Marine , an Expert Rifleman that posts Overwatch upon high ground or a rooftop , while Grunts make the assault on the objective. That .50 Caliber Rifle , more than likely , will not be used on those Missions , as the Weapon System ( WPNSYS) is heavy and cumbersome, and can be used instead, by a 7.62mm x 51 NATO Rifle , specifically , for DM( Designated Marksman) Duties.
I believe that the .50 BMG was originally a machinegun cartridge and only much later adopted as an anti-materiel precision rifle role.
