Even though BMS itself isn't actually a game, there are many clients used to play BMS (lunatic rave 2, beatoraja, qwilight, bm98, etc.), so the "game" is commonly referred to as BMS to keep things simple. (And also now it evolved to the point where the game genre has separated itself from beatmania since every song is community made)
