Pshhh homie called it Mayne-Ga 😂😂😂. I’ve literally never heard heard the term pulp until you had mentioned it in a different video prior. Pretty hard not to love those covers!
As a contrarian it behooves me to point out that collectors were not talking about pulps until auction houses, grading companies, and youtubers 'nudged' them in the right direction. In other words, these items that have existed for over 100 years are suddenly being spotlighted because auction houses and grading companies need additional revenue and where does that revenue come from? Collectors of course, who like a choir will sing in tune how they have always loved pulps (just never mentioned them) and will be buying, compiling, and sending them in for grading...of their own volition of course!
I don't collect Pulps but I do know they used to be relatively cheaper than comics from roughly the same period. Used to be.But I imagine now that the demand has increased, why not the market? I'm just hoping there won't be a demand for vintage paper backs!
The whole convention of "book length novels" comic books featuring just one character for directly back to this pulp concept. Early comic books were just animated pulp stories told in sequential art.
Once I saw the blue painter's tape I knew it was a book from CC. I landed 2 Bobby Blue books in that auction. I also bought my 1st 3 Pulps. I spent a grand total if $30, $25 and $14 bucks on them. I still think they are damn affordable. Will CGC bump their prices? A bit, but until a comprehensive on-line guide is released they'll still fly under the radar of the average collector. Now if that happens...
There is a progression of collectors. We all start out in the dollar bins. Then we pick up keys. Next thing you know you’re buying silver and bronze. This to many in the hobby a mature collector. The sophisticated collectors then move into golden age. Once you have experience that you progress to the scholarly phase of collecting and move into the unknown. Pulps! However, some of the elite move into OA. I’m not sure how truly accurate this is, but it is fun to think about.
Pulps are a bad idea, the pieces flake off the edges, you will end up with a sealed case with a bunch of little pieces floating around inside. Fortunately we now all know how to open slabs with a heat gun so we can clean out the little pieces, and then re-seal the slab. 🤣
I think is comic readers start respecting some of the things like the importance of first published works. etc... It could catch on - So many famous characters got their start in pulps, and so many authors were first published, or published important works in pulps. Not to mention the covers are generally just stunning - Time will tell. Pulps already have a base so itll be interesting to see if their grading ability will make them better sellers or expand the appeal!
I still think the “next frontier” is going to be video game first appearances. Just like how today we have all these superhero films, in the decades ahead video game characters will be effectively realized.
@@dustinandrews7409 We’ve had literally one video game movie be released and be successful. lol What I’m communicating is that what superhero films are today will be video game epic shared universes in the future.
@@dustinandrews7409 That's not accurate. The market did crash just like comics and other collectibles did, but is now going along just fine. And his point is that he's talking about years from now.
I am very interested in manga grading but alot of the books are already highly priced raw, I would just wait until graded copies start flooding the market
Pulps are neat to collect. I have a few nice ones. Been looking for a wierd tales feb 28( 1st call of Cthulhu….on another note, Is cgc gonna count pulp pages? Seems like a lot of work.
I'm really looking forward to Pulp grading and happy these treasures are getting the notoriety and being preserved. I was there at the Collector's Summit (met you, Swagg) and not only saw the pulp action, but my only buy at the show was a copy of Marvel Science Stories #1, which pre-dates Marvel Comics #1 by a year. Excited to see where this goes.
Beckett by passing CBCS (a company they own) to slab these in Beckett cases demonstrates how little they value CBCS. The fact is CBCS shouldn’t even exist, that company should have been rebranded as Beckett Comic Grading the moment they were acquired
Already been collecting viz floppies for awhile. Prices have gone up a lot. Sold a couple DBZ #1 first print 9.6s (kept the 9.8) for $400. They go for around $100 raw.
*You have to consider the mindset of English and Japanese collectors -- the Japanese manga and magazines are often the first editions of their English counterparts and require encapsulation due to the condition they're usually obtained in ~ Not to mention much are rarer than even Golden Age comics due to the Japanese perspective - of old, mind you - to throw away their manga once read due to the dimensions and space-pollution of the books ~*
Glad to hear someone in the community talking about pulps. There is so much artistic history there to appreciate. I started collecting pulps 2 years ago and I proudly display them with my comics. I'm also looking into some of the weekly/monthly manga mags from japan. Sadly the paper they are printed on is not the best.
Pulps are great but I very rarely ever find them outside of conventions or online. In the years of hunting for comics and finding a grail here or there. It has not been my delight to come across a pulp. Especially one that is better than a 4.0. Trimmed Pulps will automatically be capped a 3.0 from what cgc has said. either a 3.0 or 4.0 one of the two max grades.
I had just seen a Robert E. Howard story Queen of the black coast 1934 and I'm going to regret not purchasing it. Incidentally Tarzana CA. is named for Edgar Rice Burroughs old ranch that took up the entire area near San Fernando Valley.
A lot of GA books, especially PCH, are valuable because of cool covers; there are a bunch of pulps with cool covers that aren't worth anything 🤷♂️ I would need to do more research before spending money on them
I used to have a copy of that fantastic book! Wonderful pickup. Saunders painted covers and pulp painted covers (in my opinion) are superior to comic book covers from the same time.
Personally im disappointed that cgc decided to enter the pulp market. The prices of pulps, especially shudder and spicy books, has skyrocketed over the last couple of years due in part to cgc announcing their eventual pulp grading efforts. Runs i was collecting a few years ago have seen a up to a 10x increase in price due to speculators flooding into the market. The only effect cgc pulp grading has on a collector like me, who doesnt buy slabs, is now the books i buy have gotten a lot more expensive. Also, i belive the highest graded all story tarzan sold by HA was a F- copy, with resto. The record sale with the vg copy was the highest grade non restorsd complete book theyve offered.
I see graded manga services going away real quick. Manga people mostly just want to read and if they do collect probably dont think slabs are aesthetic to display. Collectors probably dont see much monetary gain in manga when they're so abundant. It will be DOA if CGC goes into it
That's a pretty good price for your book. It will be fun to hunt down pulps. It will make them more collectable and open up the market for more cool and rare covers.
Very good video. Pulp and Manga are both great markets to get into early for big profits. With pulps those Shadow covers are off the chart, while with manga I look for OA art.
Looking forward to sending all my Pulps to CGC for 9.9 Pre-Screen.
You know that stuff will only work out for influencers. CGC is gonna make bank off of so many people....
I like u I can't stop laughin'!

I love the vintage Sci-Fi pulp covers!!!
😂 Rare and demand are two different things...The slab everything craze is getting out of hand..lol

I don’t disagree…it’s why I say to be a little cautious with them. They are niche but I can “feel” everyone getting excited and seeing dollar signs
The Collectibles-Industrial Complex needs even more marks to grift.
Comics are old hat and comic collectors have lost their sexiness.
Love the All-story first Tarzan.

Pulp magazines are amazing. Alex Schomberg did a lot of pulp covers.

I don't think you're wrong. The ancient holds a mystique, and for comics fans, pulps are the ancient.

Pulps are my favorite books and always have been. I really like the 1940's-50's Nazi and Sci-Fi covers.
Norm Sanders is also very well known in the non-sports cards community. By far the set he is best known for is 1962 Mars Attacks.

I picked up a few Pulps a couple of years ago. It amused me to have some L Ron Hubbard sci-fi stories.
Ps. Humphrey Bogart the man. His movies rule! 👍
If the comic book price guides have them (Go Collect, GPA), then I'm all for it
Okay that might be the Action Comics #1 pulp equivalent, but the real question is what is the pulp equivalent to Darkhawk #1?

Don't forget to mention that those Shonen weekly magazines are the size of telephone books.

Manga is over mass produced. There won’t be a market for it in the future. Video games are second to comics.
