Bravo. It warms my heart to see them perform again. I doubt Kim will ever join Thurston on stage again, and I completely understand. However, to see these three together, or any combination of the Youth, is a blessing.
Either just an one time event or rebirth of Sonic Youth, thank you! That is f-ing beautiful! You have no idea how much you mean to me growing up. And what a privilege to seen you live in 90`s. Hope to see more of it.
There's a special place for you in heaven, my friend❤. Thanks so so so much. I saw them back in 2004 and it changed my life. To see them playing together again in 2024 is a blessing.
Everything about this is masterful. The subtly is deafening! It's not so much language than it is architecture. The most beautiful engineering done with strange paint brushes. Even the steady camera shot and it falling at the end! PERFECT! Btw... thanks for picking up the camera again and making a different upload after that point. It adds to the magic being performed. Fuckin great! All good! Saludos from Upland CA!
Jesus the haters. Mind you there’s 3 other people who contributed to the band. Their personal relationship isn’t our life. But you will never have sy without Kim.
To the haters: This is not a sonic youth reunion, this is a trio of experimental musicians free improvising for a set at an experimental music venue. They were never going to play Sonic youth songs. Stop complaining, and stop commenting about your favorite sonic youth years. These three have played together with one another over the last twenty years, and thurston and Lee play at the stone often enough. If you are a sonic youth fan by now you’d have come to expect this kind of thing, they’ve been playing live noise improv and avant garde for 20 some years (obviously longer within SY). enjoy it or go back to old albums
Are you one of those people who prefers the Sonic Youth album "The Spinhead Sessions" over their albums "Evol", "Bad Moon Rising", and the "Made in USA" soundtrack? Do you prefer the long ending of S.Y.'s "The Diamond Sea" over the first five minutes, or so, of "The Diamond Sea"? Do you prefer their SYR albums over the majority of what Sonic Youth released from 1983-1994? If your answer is yes to any of those aforementioned questions, then I'm saying to you: that is your choice, and that is what you choose to be like. However, you shouldn't insist that criticism of this recent performance by Lee, Thurston, and Steve can't be done by most Sonic Youth fans. Do you truly expect Sonic Youth fans to not discover this new performance by Lee, Thurston, and Steve? Sonic Youth fans don't have to like everything Sonic Youth made, and that would include this new collaboration too, even though it's not being performed under the name Sonic Youth. If a Sonic Youth fan prefers work that Thurston, Lee, etc. had made in a previous era over what they've been doing in the latter part of their career, then you shouldn't criticize those types of fans for having that kind of taste/sensibility/instinct. If you were an actual Sonic Youth fan, then you would, at least instinctively, know that a lot of the work they made from, at least, 1983-1994 is objectively of a very high-ranking nature in regards to a certain profound, esoteric understanding of things concerning art and divine revelation. The work they're doing these days, and for a long time now, is very much without a lot of what made Sonic Youth's "main era"-music what it was. In my previous comment on this video, I said "Sonic Youth's main era was 1983-1994, with 1986-1988 being their peak, and their album Daydream Nation being their magnum opus. Their album Washing Machine was the beginning of the end for them. They've gone through a gradual decline starting in about 1995, and their music has become more and more uninspired since then. Bob Dylan went through something like that himself after his main era." When I was talking about their gradual decline, and their work becoming more and more uninspired, I was talking about a large portion of the latter part of their career/collected works, including a lot of things they made under the name Sonic Youth, e.g. I don't really want to listen to most of what Sonic Youth made after their album "A Thousand Leaves" nor do I want to listen to any of their SYR-style work (i.e. whether it's under the name Sonic Youth or solo) because a lot of their works since their gradual decline began are indicative that members of Sonic Youth don't really have it any more. Also, I never said this performance is a Sonic Youth reunion, nor did I say Lee, Thurston, and Steve have to perform music which is of the style of Sonic Youth's "main era" music. However, can you honestly say that you discovered the trio of Lee, Thurston, and Steve outside of their work with Sonic Youth, and can you honestly say that Sonic Youth's "main era" has no significance?
@@regismonktonno man I’m not saying any of that, certainly not that their “main era” has no significance, or that you can’t be more of a fan of one phase over another. I’m also not replying specifically or only to you, or referring to any comments in particular. I’m simply saying this is what it is, and it’s not what it’s not. This IS in the vein of experimental free form live collaboration they’ve done before, and it is NOT, strictly speaking, sonic youth. so if your response to this performance is that you prefer the best work of sonic youth to this then that’s fine but it doesn’t have much to do with what this is.
@@GordanClipboard Thanks for the reply. I agree with you in regards to what style of music people should expect Lee, Thurston, and Steve to perform, especially at this kind of a venue.
Hey, i think washing machine is a noisy masterpiece and not many people enjoy that kind of thing, then the sonic youth series "perpectives musicales" is also awesome experimental/noise stuff in my opinion.
Kim brought sooooooooooooooooooooo much to this band, but this is still incredibly beautiful and I hope they play together all the time and do shows. 🤞
Reminds me of very early Sonic Youth, circa Evol, Confusion Is Sex, or maybe Thurston's, I think, first solo lp, Psychic Hearts. Very enjoyable, anyway. Would be even better with Kim! ❤
Whoever filmed this thank you loads. Great sound and footage quality. Have to wonder why you didn't pan left for a short while towards the end to see the instrument Lee's playing a bit more clearly?
Please guys, keep going on on a brand new project, the 3 of you plus, maybe Mark Ibold or Rourke or other playing bass. You have so much music to create as a band yet. You don't need to call yourselves SY, you don't even need to play SY tunes live. But, please, make new songs and records together. Pleeeeaaaassse ....
If they wanted to they would have. They don't need to do or force anything. SY already has a deep catalogue and they have done everything. By separating, they did much more different things than they would have done together.
During the times in my life when I listen to music, Sonic Youth is my favorite musical artist. Sonic Seniors. Very nice transition.
Sonic Seniors or Sonic Boomers. these seniors are avantgarde experimental artists. very cool indeed.
Thanks for posting this... I was lucky enough to see Thurston and Steve last week!
For those unfamiliar with Sonic Youth: this is basically an Unplugged
This is SY normally; without Kim, obviously.

Amazing- we have waited so many years for this!
Three quarters of the band is better than no band. Please come back Kim.
Please come back Mark Ibold. They’re better without trap beats grandma singing out of tune and fumbling simple basslines.
