Never really considered having your key crew all read the script but it makes so much sense. I've been to quite a few shoots where the camera guys were all asking 'silly' questions because they had not read the script.
This is probably one of the most helpful videos I have watched from you guys in a while. Film Riot is always entertaining, but I feel like pre-production is always one of the hardest humps to get over when making films and having a frame of reference to go off of makes life so much easier. Thank you guys!
Tbh the uploads these past months that include these insights from other creators have been what kept me with Film Riot. They give such great and dynamic advice, and they really put you into the situations that filmmakers should be putting themselves into.
“Filmmaking at its core is such a collaborative art form. I have learned if you know your story well you can embrace the collaboration every step of your production and come out with a film that is better than you imagined. “
Writing a real manual or a sacred text, is the kind of detail that properly builds a post-apocalyptic or scif-fi film. I have seen many sci-fi short films, and the ones that intrigue me the most are those with detail and/or multiple story lines that all build on each other.
Love hearing other filmmakers processes. Great looking project. You can really see how working in commercials influenced his organization and pre-production process.
I have the same background and am now working more and more as a director and I’ve been doubting myself as a filmmaker. So great to hear we can make it through this. (“Because my background is professionally in post-production, I’ve had to discipline myself into getting coverage beyond the edit I have in my mind.”)
Dude, this is perfect! I'm in pre-production of my 40 minute short after doing a few shorts so this is a big jump for me. There's so much to do, it's nice to have a breakdown video like this!
At around 6:20 seeing all that after affects work that the director did almost made me want to cry. Those masks are so much work.Good job on busting goes all out yourself Mr. director.
Outstanding video on the making of an independent film by the writer/director. Fascinating, beautifully presented and edited. Thanks so much for posting!
Love these types of updates, please keep doing more! Always good to get insight into how others approach things, and to also find new filmmakers to follow
thanks for reminding us we have reasons to get excited about collaborative filmmaking , and thx for illustrating some of the production steps / structure for making it happen!
I had the privilege of seeing this film at the 2017 Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival and it was awesome! It won almost every category it was nominated in. I highly recommend seeing this film!
I'm so glad that i came across this. I've watched " The Manual", & i totally enjoyed it. So i was even more interested in the explanation from Will, about how this was done. U have come a long way, & i actually thought u did a magnificent job. Well done. 👏👏 Good luck to u in all ur endeavours..!! 👌
This is actually really great, needed to watch this today. We've got two days left on a short film we're making and there's a part of me slowly going a little crazy.
Hey Ryan, absolutely love your show, been watching it for quiet some time. I love this episode Big Time! You just know how to infuse practical tips and hands on experience. And I love what Wil achieved. Keep going! I'll keep watching! Respect!
This guy is serious... I'm working at a cartoon right now. And I feel like I don't know what I'm doing and then I watch the stuff and It 90% amazing. And it motivates me to frustrait myself further. With shooting a movie it's usually lot easier.
The Manuel? So the robot is a Mexican? Kidding aside, I love the look of the film. And I love the concept. Thanks for taking the time to share some of the production details with us, Wil. Can't wait to see it!
really cool to see insight on how to make a film like this. I made a Post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi some of this I did some of this I wish I knew before getting into it
I liked the way the movie was broken down into smaller parts and the process although complex seemed logical/simple. great result made me want to have a go at doing something at a smaller scale.
Great job!! Robot looked awesome. Ignore the jealous trolls with no talent and no guts. The naysayers are unwilling to do their own project because they are scared to take risks. Keep pushing forward with your dreams...
at 6:29 how did he do that? id really like to know that would be super helpful for something im making, but i dont know the right technique for it. what is this technique? how do you do it?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compositing Most film editing software is capable of it allowing you to add or remove things from a video, obviously it takes practice to become good at it but there's thousands of tutorials online.
The post apocalyptic short film I made was literally about a year ago from today, I did it too soon 😆 Great knowledge in this though, I love seeing Film Riot reach out to filmmakers Ive been watching on Vimeo. DEFINITELY agree with letting someone else do vfx, it takes a lot out of you when you’re a one man band.
Dude you are literally doing everything I'm learning and teaching myself the hard way. I wish I knew what you knew. I'm also Limited in software. As I only have HitFilm And Wondershare Filmora which I am most familiar with. Rotoscoping and motion tracking is My biggest issue.
I really enjoy and look forward to Film Rioters (?) in the videos. However, this was absolutely fantastic and don't mind if there's more like it in the future
I don't care how busy I am. When Film Riot uploads. I stop what I'm doing.
Yes
Even homework
The same!!!
inglesamericano101 ¡Hola! Estoy apriendo español ahora. Tips?
What if he upload when you are watching a Film Riot video? Will you stop watching it?
Never really considered having your key crew all read the script but it makes so much sense. I've been to quite a few shoots where the camera guys were all asking 'silly' questions because they had not read the script.
Apocalyptic production design always seems like it would be so much fun to work on!
Damn my friend was planning a post-apocalyptic action short film for December, this timing was impeccable
Kevin Schanbacher i was just thinking of one as well lol , almost perfect timing for inspiration
Dude same me and my friends are planning a post apocalyptic short movie this month. Great timing
@yeeeeeeeeeth chill
This is like I AM MOTHER on Netflix lol they should pay this guy royalties.
But this one is probably good
@@OBryanAguiar true! I am Mother was visually decent but that's it!
that was genuinely a great show
True

Z makes me think of a skeleton

very Tolkien esque, it's the invisible and minuscule details that make the authenticity come alive.
That storyline seems so interesting. I wonder if the film will be available on RUclips?
it is
dust

The idea of the guy speaking with the mannerism of the robot is great! Looking foward to see the full short film.
Looks like a terrific short. Thought it was interesting that he said he took on too much in post. Being a one-man show can be hard on your family.

Great episode! Thanks for putting it together. Always love hearing from other people and giving them the chance to be heard through your platform.
Reverse Chappie... I like it
The title's a bit misleading
How...?
The title is "Creating an Apocalyptic World", but it's not discussed.
at least here in brazil, this isn't a low budget movie :o
It does a perfectly fine job explaining how to make any environment that includes post apocalyptic scenes
Same it doesn't explain how they do it so well. Green screen? Vfx? Did they blow up a city for real?
No joke this actually goes perfect for a project I️ was working on!
TheGingerAvenger was?

Great tips. I love the thought of closing your eyes while reading the script.
4:01 War.. War never changes

This guy is awesome! I'm new to this scene but was something I always wanted to do.
This is actually really great, needed to watch this today. We've got two days left on a short film we're making and there's a part of me slowly going a little crazy.
The story seems so interesting, I was never a fan of post apocalyptic films untill I saw this sneek peek
Fantastic episode! I grabbed a copy of The Manual. Very well done!
Quality stuff Ryan, Quality stuff.
What a great idea for an episode. I've thought about this before.
Exelent!!! It is super important, to see these steps, they are the right ones for a great cinematographic work
Movie quote reference at end has to be Leviathan. Love me some Peter Weller.

If there was one soundtrack I wouldn't use for an apocalypse movie... This is the one.

The Manuel? So the robot is a Mexican?

Where are you guys based at?
this movie seems like a great one, the idea is superb. I would love to see it!
Useful reminders.Thank you.
This helps so much! It'll add to the production of our Post Apocalyptic web series!
Masterclass' film making pre-roll seems to suit here good =-)
Nice video! That was very insightful. I'm going to use several of these methods when I'll get to make a short.

Really great video! Lots of things I want to try out!!
It's 2020 and "Raised by Wolves" is killing it
