  • www.familiesaga... In turmoil following the break-up of a longtime relationship, David (Nick Mancuso) seeks something to give him a new direction and falls in with a religious cult. Before long, David has been completely brainwashed by the group and has receded from his old life. When his dedicated buddy, Larry (Saul Rubinek), tracks him down and discovers the reality of his situation, he proceeds to rally David's family and other friends to remove him from the cult and shake its influence.
From the NY Times: ''TICKET TO HEAVEN'' is an absorbing, frightening, entirely believable movie, which is particularly amazing in view of its subject matter. This is the story of a young man who is seduced into joining a religious cult, and it presents the group's indoctrination process in terms that are graphic, terrifyingly plausible and all too easy to understand. It is also the story of his friends and relatives' efforts to get him back, after he has become a near-zombie with close-cropped hair and a fierce but automatic dedication to the cult's leader. A credit at the end of the movie says this is fiction. That credit is the one thing about ''Ticket to Heaven'' that is genuinely funny.

This is Exactly my life in the Unification Church. From labor trafficking, gaslighting, sleep deprivation, coercive control, marriage trafficking and I'm sorry but the sexual, physical mental and emotional abuses are all real. Down to the songs we sang. Amazing movie. Thank you for this

I’ve read that David’s final glance (before the credits rolled) was either A) David was free from the cult on his recovery to freedom or B) David was just buying time to fool his loved ones until he could escape and get back into the cult. One of those INCEPTION type endings to let the audience decide. My opinion is that David’s final glance at Meg Foster, Kim Cattrall and company was an angry glance that said ‘YOU LIED TO ME and YOU LOST ME.” Anyway…that’s my take. What’s yours? Thoughts?

I read the book upon which this movie was based. It was called "Moonwebs" by Josh Freed. (Freed makes a cameo as one of the guys in the sharing group with Davey and Ruthie (Nick Mancuso and Kim Cattrall) In the book, the young man taken into the cult--his name in the book was "Benji"--did remain permanently out of the cult so we can hope that that was what the producers were saying but, who knows? Its a great question to reflect on and I wondered the same thing. Incidentally, t he subject of the book, the real "David", does make a cameo in the movie. He is never identified in the credits but my hunch is that he is the taller guy wearing an apron whom 'David' almost runs into as he fled Dr Dyer's (played by the always excellent Patrick Brymer) last lecture. I have no evidence to back that up but he fits the description given by Mr Freed in the book. There are a number of significant differences between the book and the movie. Ingrid and Carl arent referenced in the book but there is a character that is clearly Ruthie. Also 'Larry' is undoubtedly the author of the book despite a number of significant differences between the two characters. Its a good read to back watching the movie if you get a chance. Its available on Amazon

I took it as a real look of contempt. Almost like he was "I'm gonna get you back for what you tried to do to me." So probably the first step in starting an advocacy group to stop the cult.

I interpret the ending with the stare he went back to being evil or he thought about going back.

I have to admit that I can't keep my eyes away from Ruthie when she appears. I don't mean objectively. You can see how sensual she is -not in a sexual or comedic way as she does in SATC, and that's the terrifying about the manipulative character she's playing here. She uses her temper for manipulation keeping at each point her evilness back but still not hiding it. I believe that Kim Cattrall is one of the greatest actresses of her generation.

I don't see Ruthie as evil per se. Just as someone who has a misguided sense of loyalty to a very manipulative group that she probably does not have fully detailed information on. Remember, she has been part of that cult for five years and has probably reached the point where she cannot turn back and start anew.

    • @ruekie

@@williamadebonojo3061 Hm. I understand. Kim Cattrall herself mentions her as a kind of "siren" and that she really would believe that she's doing a favour for the others by recruiting them. That musn't mean that she's "evil" in a literal way.

Good luck brother but be careful. A bad deprogrammer can cause almost as much harm as the brainwashing itself. A very few key points to remember: if the person has been in the cult for more than a year at the very most, there is nothing you can do. By that point the conditioned personality that the victim shows to the world has become that person. The old person you knew is gone and virtually unrecoverable. What you see is what they have become forever. Once in a great while a person like this will 'deprogram his or her self. Its rare but it may be your only bet. You dont need a deprogrammer for that. You just find a way to confront the person with the facts about their chosen group. In truth, you have about 2-3 months after a person enters a cult to get them back. You must find them when their native personality --the person you knew--is wrestling for control of the mind with the new personality the cult is trying to imprint on the 'victim'. Just be very careful if you try to do this. The scenes of the parents being arrested for trying to kidnap their daughter are real. That really happens. Check your deprogrammer's credentials and choose carefully. There are deprogrammer groups in the SFO Bay area, Montreal Canada and a plethora in the South. God Bless
