The aunt in this video is actually my mom. Ten years ago, Maangchi visited my mom, who was living alone in Yeosu, Korea, and made abalone porridge and other delicious dishes for her. Watching this video makes it feel as if my mom is still alive and that she’ll welcome me when I visit Yeosu, which brought me to tears. I want to thank Maangchi once again for preparing such wonderful meals. This video will remain precious to me, and I’ll watch it whenever I miss my mom. Thank you again, Maangchi.
These are my favorite Maangchi videos of when she shows her homeland and I love that the Korean people she cooks for LOVE her cooking and are very impressed! Maanchi is a GRAND MASTER COOK and I love that her Aunt gives her advice example when she says "add sesame oil" or "cut that thinner"
Thank you for sharing this. I’m watching and thinking about my 88 year old mom and appreciating the times I have to cook for her and the joy it brings to us.
Maangchi, thank you for this video. How wonderful it is that you visited your "aunt" and cooked for her and now you have these memories to come back to any time you want. Thank you for showing us the not so familiar ingredients and the ways you prepare and cook them. The porridge looks delicious!
This was such a lovely gift that you’ve shared. I learned so much, and your aunt was a lovely and fun lady. Really, really great video, might be my favorite so far. I learned so much!!
Hello Maangchi, I've been a follower for many years now. Last time I commented (I believe), I was dating a Korean man and your videos helped me cook some dishes from home that he hadn't had in a long time as his parents still live in Korea. We dated for three years, and we've been broken up for even longer but your videos still inspire me and bring me comfort. I have lost a lot of the Korean that I learned but I think I'll try to learn again so I can connect with more wonderful people. Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, for all people. 항상 감사합니다 ❤❤ 건강하세요!!
So sweet and significant. We can always find time to return the gifts that are given to us before we had the means to do so. A meal and cooking should come from the heart and is ultimately about giving and sharing together.
As a cook myself from a country that maybe sells 3 different fish types in their restaurants, i'm so happy to see how some stuff is prepared and cooked! Was so interesting to see what you can use from the seafood - i should really visit korea one day and taste-test some things!
Coming home ang cooking to all closest to our hearts is time well spent and will be part of the history of our life. Tomorrow is not promised, cherish these times while we have a chance.
2:15 So satisfying watching the shopkeeper stack the shells... 6:33 This was a really warm conversation 😭 Maangchi asking all about 이모's usual eating habits. One of the best ways to show you care for a person is by cooking for them and making sure they eat well, but sometimes you can't always be there.
What a coincidence. I visited my mother in law during Christmas in Yeosu. She is doing the best Miyeokguk I ever tried. I got up early in the morning climbed the mountain and came back to eat the seaweed soup. So relaxing
I'm so glad you got to cook & spend time with her. This episode is extra special to me. On one of my last conversations with my grandma, she said she missed my cooking. It was so meaningful to hear her say that as she had taught me at around 8 years old about her way of cooking & going to the wet market to get ingredients from her regular vendors. She passed not even 2 months later. As I had gotten older, I've written down recipes I watched her, my Mom, & various Aunties & Uncles make. I remember one particular steamed rice dessert that was made by my grandma's brother. Not too sweet,, but it was fluffy with a slight chewiness. Buttery & coconut-vanilla flavor that I looked forward to, made once a year at Christmas/new year time. Sadly, that family recipe is gone. It's very hard to do when our elders measured with their eyeballs & by taste😂😂😂
i really really enjoy these personal videos. They are heartwarming and it is fun to "get to know you" better. Please make and publish more of these. The food looks divine. I never had the desire to eat porridge before..but this one looks so delicious. I think i will prepare some. Can i use salmon to make porridge?
that was very sweet of you to visit an old friend/aunt. at her age we never know what will be tomorow for her, and sharing a meal while she is still alive im sure meant so much to her
Deepest condolences for the loss of a loved one. It's good you have videos to look back to. Cherish every moment cause no one knows when or the time our loved ones will be ttaaaken from us. We have nnow. Let's make it memorable. Happy u did this video. ❤❤
Fantastic video…from you talking with the seafood market lady to you and Auntie in the kitchen preparing the special food and enjoying each other’s company, laughing and eating fresh (natural) seafood dishes and locally grown spinach. Thank you for sharing some very special personal memories. Your Auntie may no longer be with us in this world, but I think she must be someplace fantastic, near an ocean with the most wonderful seafood and she is busy cooking up the most fabulous dishes and hosting the angels.
This was so touching . I like cook too . Making a meal for someone so special means a lot . Do you ever regret being so far from family ? You know , they’re all we really have . The older my relatives get I think about that . I’m glad I found your channel !
This is beautiful Maangchi, seeing the OG influence and we can thank your lovely aunt who inspired all your wonderful memories and recipes. What a cherished memory to have. I too cried a bit when you sat down together to eat. ❤❤
Memories are precious, and the time spent is invaluable. In 2010, I visited my aunt in Nebraska. It was the summer after my parents died. We spent three days together talking and eating. I didn't get the chance to see her again before she passed away. She told me stories about my dad and his brother that I had never heard before. Why some things come up at the times they do are a mystery. I hope your time with your aunt was as valuable as mine was to me.
Your aunt was such a good sport, following your directions for your video! I’m crying, yet, feeling happy for the “first and last time” you cooked for her. You made wonderful memories for the both of you. Thank you for sharing some of those memories with us.❤

Thank you for sharing this special time with your Aunt. Such a loving way to honor her by offing to cook & share together. Your honest, thoughtful ways of explaining is very helpful.
