If his trainer hadn't been such a freaking wuss, I really think they could have been an amazing team. Granted, I'm glad Charmander made him wild again, but hey, I'D want him on my team.
I would have swooped in and saved that Flareon. Any trainer would need 8 gym badges to get me to listen to their commands, being level 81, but at least I have a heart. I am assuming this Flareon is around level 33, so I know I must be really careful; but I would have to service that Charmander.
Thank god it’s not one of those moments where a character with a small role suffers and I feel bad while someone else straight up doesn’t give a shit but now I’m glad it’s not like that

When you think about it, this is probably one of the best Pokemon animations ever. It's so developed, and it actually has some sense of emotion and tension. All of the characters have some sort of personality, and it fits the series so well.

Flareon is one of my favourite pokémon, so it was nice for him to be spared.

not really lol... I remember in omega ruby one of the mega charizards have drought ability, meaning he can use solar beam right away! and not to mention sunny day weakens water attacks. he can easily outclass a water pokemon. plus can easily kill rock/ground with solar beam. lol
I think no one was talking about 1v1 between the starters. And stats worth nothing ingame since every starter can do the job. It's not a fighting game.
The three are just 3 different playstyles, and in Kanto Charmander is offensive but it's the least useful because it requires more grinding and has no effectiveness except at the grass gym, the rest of the game counter it (rock tunnels, water areas, e4, etc.) unless you like to overlevel it.
Squirtle is more defensive. It has 2 weaknesses and can cover them with 2 moves. Making the game a child's play.
Bulbasaur is support/tank that excels in special stats and medium in difficulty, it's also more useful because its versatile, it can acts as a sweeper, wall, support and a pokemon catcher with its status moves.
Unless you want competitive, it's a different story, where it's easily Venusaur/Charizard > Blastoise.
Tl:dr The best starter is what suits your playstyle.

True though the reason that flarion is a flarion is because of the trainer evolving him using a fire stone
