Hi there, Liron here! In today's lesson we'll learn how to paint realistic people in a loose alla-prima process.
This combination of approaches is something I've been asked about a lot recently, and I want to show you how it works.
Realism comes from the fundamentals, while the looseness comes from the planning & process.

I’ve been working on a painting of my cat in bright sunlight for weeks…just couldn’t get it right. Watched this demo this morning and, using your techniques, boom I got it!! Thanks Liron!
That's AWESOME 😁😁
So happy it helped!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
It's a stunning little painting, Liron...you have captured their conversation forever! Love watching your process and I'm so grateful that you are capable of talking us through it.
Thank you so much 😊🙏🏼 Painting this was the most fun I've had in a while!
I like how you shaded the skin color in dark colors so smoothly
Thank you! The colors here are surprisingly dark when you actually analyze them 😁
Many fear going that dark - but it's the way to go for!
We want "Liron brush sets"! Thick, dark, moppy!!
My wife agrees too.
I don’t know how all your paints and mixes look like black to me, your final painting has so much subtlety and color in them!
There’s a lot of nuance in the mixes (:
But it could also be the camera’s fault 😛
My first thought was "What a mess!". But obviously it's a functional mess... ;-)
I love the light and shadow contrast. It really draws your attention into the areas. Thank you.
Thank you 😊🙏🏼 Will try and do more scenes of that style
Amazing how such abstract shapes connect to a subject
Thank you 🙏😊
Just what I aspire to Liron, loose but believable and recognizable. Magic.
Thank you Barbara, you can do it! 😊🎨
The highlights and values are excellent. The figures are so genuine, lifelike, you can almost hear them talking. This is the first time I realized by not meeting the edges, you are creating highlights. It is inspiring to watch you paint and explain the process. Thanks for another great video.
Mind blown! Actual magic when yuo first realise what you are looking at!
Haha the magic of watercolor 😉🎨
This is the style I love. Simple and expressive.
You're a wizard!! 🤩 thanks for this helpful video!
Omg going in with darks that dark is brave. I about had a heart attack
Haha 😁 It’s the easiest thing once you get a feel for wet in wet, and the water:paint ratio!
The more challenging part is mixing the dark paint fast enough while everything is constantly drying 😂
you make it look like the paint does all the work like the brush is a magic wand
The paint indeed does all the work (:
With experience and time - I mostly learned to get out of the way 😉
Wow. Like magic
😁
I really enjoyed watching you paint this, thank you so much.
Thank you for watching 😊🙏🏼 Much appreciated
Awesome, man
Love it!
WOW, Liron, I watched you regularly over the past few years (and commented occasionally), but I moved to a farm last year and I've been busy every minute. I haven't gotten to paint or had time to watch painting videos. Animal husbandry videos took precedence for sure. I enjoyed watching you from your early days and seeing your progress from picture to picture. But this big jump I see with a year's absence, seeing your confidence in painting quickly and loosely, and your ability to interpret and paint the scene into such a realistic painting so quickly and adroitly has practically blown my mind this morning. Hopefully next winter I'll be able to make time to follow your teachings and move forward the way you have. Thank you for all you do to share and encourage the rest of us!
Thank you so much Cindy! 😁🙏🏼 I hope things are going well on the farm, must be hard yet rewarding work 💪💪 Keep it up and the vids will always be here for you to paint from when you got the time 🎨
same here! tuning in after a year and wow. he has upped his game for sure!
Love this
😊🙏🏼
It's magical, watching you paint. You make it looks so easy - which just shows how very skilled you are!
Thank you Rita 😊🙏🏼 I have lots of fun so it looks easy!
This was extremely well done and explained. Thank you!
Great work! Thank you so much for sharing.
You are a real joy to watch and to learn from...What a phenomenal teacher you are (and artist, of course). THANK YOU!!!
Oh thank you so so much 😊🙏🏼
Beautiful Liron
Thank you Mark 😊🙏🏼
I'm always so impressed by the Alla-Prima and loose style in watercolor. I do weird surrealistic art so I tend to make everything very detailed and hyper realistic. I feel that if I am painting a man with his elbow stretched out really long and rolled up into a wheelbarrow that if I do it loose no one will know what the heck is going on, LOL!! I love how it came out Liron, VERY well done!!!
Haha great way of describing it 😂
It's all about the big shapes for me (check out the posterized image in the description box)!
As long as I don't lose sight of that - I'll do fine ^_^
I just love how messy your palette is…just like mine.
Haha thanks 😁
Fantastic thanks!
It would never have occurred time to go that grey, especially with watercolor, I really love it. I mostly paint florals but I can still apply principals that you talk about to that subject as well. You are a great teacher! My previous experience is with oil painting so I am finding your instruction so helpful.
I love your art work sir
Really nice!
😍😍😍 Great! Thank you for sharing!
Surpreendente como você obtem este efeito tão realista com tanta leveza e simplicidade. Um mestre.
Just tried it and I'm surprised and happy with the results. Really love that technique, thank you for sharing 😊
I keep watching this video. It blows my mind!
Thank you so much 😊🙏🏼 I enjoy watching it once in a while too 😅 And I usually get bored from my vids (I already know everything he’s talking about!)
Always love your people paintings!
Thank you Zen Man! I should do MORE 😁 I don't paint nearly enough people haha
Really, really nice. I liked this tutorial a lot. Thanks.
wow, amazing work . like it .
Thank you very much for this! I have a habit of drawing going full realistic, but I want to bring some looseness to my style and learn techniques that can speed up my workflow at the same time. Your video was super straight to the point and informative, love how you explain the logic behind color choices and values. You just gained a new suscriber!
Wow thank you so much! And welcome aboard 🙏😊
Amazing
With every brushstroke I say “no, he ruined it, it's too dark” but in the end… :)
Thank you
Very helpful Liron, I love the clarity of these unfussy figures that capture the effect of light so beautifully. Great to watch the process of you achieving it.
Thank you Alison! 😊🙏🏼
This "one go" approach really does improve the freshness and prevents fussiness. I've been enjoying it a lot!
I just found you!! I’m loving following you along painting it really makes me move fast and not get bogged down with details please make more flower follow alongs and trees scenes!! Thank you
Damn that's great!!
Nice, I teach art and this is helpful to teachers as well as students
Very very nice 👏👏👏👏👏🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯
It's like watching a magic trick :)
A really great job on this one Liron, enjoyed it a lot, cheers Paul
Thanks Paul! 😊🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for another sharing! God bless you!
Thank you for watching 😊🙏🏼 Happy I can help!
This makes me want to do the new course even more! Awesome video as always.
Very happy to hear! 😁 I'm sure you'll gain a lot from it 😊🙏🏼
fantastic!
Thank you my friend 😊🙏🏼
This is so unique and beautiful! Really enjoyed watching it! Thanks for sharing. Big thumbs up👍
Thank you so much Nika! 😊😊
I had no idea watercolour could be...this! Thank you.
מהמם!!!!
Woow this thing came out so good😊
Thank you! 😊
LIRON, GREETINGS FROM MINNESOTA - THE LAND OF 10,000 LAKES! Thanks for ALL your EXCELLENT CONTENT, my brother! ALWAYS APPRECIATE YOU!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Amazing how you work , it’s magic xoxo
Thank you Monica 😊🙏🏼 The magic of watercolor!
You are so good - and teach so well - thank you 🙏
Thank you so much Linda! 😊🙏🏼
Happy I could channel the skills into teaching
you are doing amazing !!! love so much your "page" ! a real pleasure everytime and learning so much all the time :)
Love the painting and the process. Nice drawing as well.. The result is some kind of nostalgic to me in some way, I can't express it perfectly. Let's say magic
Thank you my friend 😊🙏🏼 That's a great thing to hear actually!
As long as I can elicit some kind of an emotion - I'm extremely satisfied!
सर्वोत्तम वीडियो.... Mean best video 👌👌👌👌
Thank you my friend 😊🙏🏼
Great lesson Liron! I would have spoiled it by putting background lines in….but this has so much light! Thanks for the tip re jeans colour!
Haha happy to help 😁 A more detailed background can be added gently, there are many ways to make it work. Just gotta keep it graceful 😉
Another great demo, very interesting finished piece. I usually watch all your vids as soon as they come out but I forget to comment on them, so I'm commenting on all of them today 😅
Love the muted colours.
All I can say is “Amazing “
😊🙏🏼
Just amazing. You make it look so easy but it starts with a great drawing, followed by an unbelievable mastery of how the colors dry. Thanks for sharing. Shavuot Tov
Thank you David 😁🙏🏼 Much appreciated!
👍🏻👍🏻
Badass thanks for sharing bro 😎
You got it my friend! 😁🙏🏼 Thank you for all the support
Nice
Very nice 👌
Thank you! 😊🙏🏼
Almost hard to comment when these videos have become sort of a teacher-student situation. But I smashed the like button for ya!
Haha 😁 Thank you so so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Really appreciate your style.. which brush and size did you use for this particular painting
'Slike a scene from that Better Call Saul episode... heh heh!
😁
amazing videos. I have to subscribe to the channel. I want to learn a lot from this channel. you are a very blessed artist
Thank you so much! 😊🙏🏼 Welcome aboard
Thank you for sharing. Are these synthetic brushes you're using for painting people? Thanks.
Great video Liron, is Saunders cold press your favorite paper to paint on?
Yes! However this one is the BaoHong Academy cold press (:
Liron, a question aboout the course realis you offer. I'm probably in the intermediate level of watercolor, could the course be of use to me? Or should i go for another one you offer? Thank you in advance!
How do you get your drawing so perfect?
I love your videos.
I am a new watercolor artist.
I need to know what good quality of brush you use?
Thank you 🙏😊
My go to for these types of details and accuracy is the Escoda Barroco brush, size 16 (:
@@LironYan thank you, I will check these out.
at 1:40 do u see dog in 3rd pallete down?
How can I learn to do this en plain air, without a reference photo?
Gotta practice (:
It’s not easy, but possible!

I've watched several of your videos - thanks! I'm wondering why your entire palette looks black.
Thank you! Haha the wells or mixing areas? 😂
Wells - probably due to bad lighting when filming this specific vid.
Mixing areas - in this particular vid it's all so gray, so my mixes look very gray / black.
Natural colors tend to be very muted, and it's rare to find strong individual colors.
Hope that answers the question 😉🙏🏼
Thanks! Yes, everything looks black except one of the wells has a little bit of red. Do you have a video on the colors you like in your palette?@@LironYan
@@templekeepernd I have a few, but it's very simple - I mostly use 3 primary colors - blue, red and yellow. And I like having a cooler and a warmer version of each. So the gist of it is the Daniel Smith Essentials Introductory set (: amzn.to/37R2ZI5
@@LironYan Thanks so much Liron and thanks for sharing your work with all of us!!!
What is a FFW? How would I know if I own one or not?
It's my Frustration-Free Watercolor course (:
Feel free to email me at Liron @ LironYan . com and I can check for you and let you know🙏🏼
What kind of sorcery is this!?
Old watercolor wizardry!
came here to ask what paints you used and DAAAANG daniel smith?? really? how in the crepe-lovin' hell do you get them to cooperate so well?? mine flow all over the place and obliterate the borders of the sections. misbehaving badly.
Haha interesting! What paper are you using?
I find paint in general is more unruly with hot press smooth paper. Same with pulp paper.
Cold press 100 cotton is way more forgiving. Let me know! (:
@@LironYan strathmore coldpress actually! also a strathmore vision journal both smooth and toothed. they are just wild and wiley. maybe i'm using too much water :)
yeah i don't think i've been using anything that is cotton.... a little spendy, when i'm already over-broke from buying a million DS SCH and WN tubes.... ha
Why didn't you show yourself drawing the picture?
After all, the drawing is the most important part. If the drawing is off so to every thing else.
Because I traced it to save time 😂 I usually do that for videos, but if you want to see a good drawing + painting process, this is a good one if you haven’t watched already:
ruclips.net/video/JwVp41Jz7ho/видео.html
And this one too:
ruclips.net/video/Zmmk6M7qgYQ/видео.html
And then finally this one (:

@@LironYan yes thank you. The drawing is the most important part. So thank you. Please show me drawing videos. Thank you.
@@phillipstroll7385 Will do more! (:
