this is why i like fort minor, i'm happy that there are still rappers out there who really have something to say, hip-hop with a meaning is very rare these days.
Theres plenty of deep hiphop riddled with meaning around. You just have to go looking for it and stay the fuck away from this mainstream mumbling bullshit that everyone seems to love
the fact is mike not only writes the lyrics but he also composes the tunes too he plays the piano .. 'get me gone' is another goodie.. he is a talented artist.. his music is art.. people should check out the making of fort minor rising tide.
The truth in this song gives me the chills. This society feeds on the negative things we claim to hate so much. We eat it up. We ask for the truth, but do we really wanna hear it for what it really is? No, we'd rather feel better.

Mike is a brilliant lyricist. I'm not into hip hop at all, but this kind of music and lyrics has a theme so universal and durable, it is difficult not to like and respect it.
***** Dude macklemore started rapping in 1997, so technically he's been around way longer than fort minor (2004). Give his album Language of My World a listen, it's more old school than this, and the lyrics are much more real. No reason to hate macklemore just because his new shit has got mainstream.
This reminds me of some interview with Tupac. The part I'm talking about goes like this: "Listen to what they sayin', don't just bob your head to the beat"
Mike is one of those rappers who alot of people sleep on. In polls on social media i never see him ever get put up there like ever. Let one of your friends who are into rap give high voltage a chance, the lyrics on that song are wildly out there his play on words are way out there.
This is the only hip hop music I really like that was released in this Millennium. I hope that some day in the ashes of all the stoic party lyrics, and endless resampling of the same beats, that a new saviour comes and brings back originality.
i remember when i heard this on my walkman way back in the days .. then when everything was so smooth.. things were so smooth if you know what i mean. music felt like music
The funny thing is I've been listening to this album ever since it came out ever single fucking day. These songs simply never get old. The sound, the lyric, you can relate to it all so damn well. This is a lesson for song writers, if people can't relate to it then don't even bother making it.
I remember hearing this for the first time on a road trip to Bangalore and thinking to myself that hip hop will never be the same for me again.. FM was so underrated. Just pure genius.
Roxanne Ringler Yeah, I heard somewhere that there's going to be a 2015 album........ I hope it's true. But we'll see. I'm ODST Tygre III by the way, I'm just too lazy to change accounts again right now, lol
He's saying that it's something that people do for coolness. When Mike is one of those good rappers who actually talk about important things, not just about being cool
Jay-Z produced this song. Jay-Z should have listened to this song. This is the ultimate mockery of the rap establishment and the culture surrounding it that has led to the self-deception of millions of insecure African Americans who look for belonging. The genius of Shinoda is that he did it from inside the industry, and had its biggest name produce it.
+Phoenix Urban He probably listened to it but he didn't care because his meaningless songs maid him rich and when you have money you still want more. More money and working the least ... (sorry if my english isn't perfect I speak french)
Had the pleasure of hearing this live on Mike's Vienna show a couple of days ago. Man, I will never understand where all this comes from in you, but am I fucking grateful for the opportunity to actually enjoy what you do. Thank you SO MUCH.
"Give your whole neighborhood some second-hand rap". Love that line, I wish someone would bump THIS in their car when they drive by instead of...other stuff. -_- Also, I love the choral arrangement. Really gives it a dramatic feel.
Fort Minor may rap for Linkin Park, but he is his own artist. And honestly, "right now", he is doing so much better than them, "believe me", "remember the name" because he is better than most rapper, maybe on par with eminem, but i mean, whatever people feels like the songs "feel like home". just don't become "petrified" because you are too biased, "be somebody" and "slip out the back" and don't miss the opportunities given. cuz "there they go:, and you'll end up asking... "Where'd you go?"
"Cigarettes say they're safe, rappers claim they really bang" Sadly this issue have not changed for the better since 2005, I would say it is actually even worse now with the things many rappers claim about themselves
Okay, for one, I don't compare because different people make music about different things, with different styles. I listen to different groups for diversity. That said: How can you even compare Mike to Em? Two separate universes. Em is the smartest raper in the "Game". Mike doesn't even make a pretense of playing the game. He is one of the truest emcees out there. Notice I did not say rapper or hip-hop artist. He wraps empathy, philosophy, and heart. Depth of character, no falsehood found.
This is definitely one of my top 10 tracks I relate to in my life. Mike Shinoda is such a beast, No offense he is GREAT in Linkin Park But When he is Doing Fort Minor.... I mean DAMN!!! This is what Real Rasp is. Mike And S.O.B. Is still keeping it alive with they flow!!!! MACHINE SHOP!!!
Dream №? - drive next to Shinoda's place, turn on this track in the middle of the night and wake Mike up with his own lyrics «If you're in the car, turn up the track, man, Give your whole neighborhood some second hand rap»
God you people, this song isn't about smoking. Its comparing mainstream rap about money, sex, violence, ect to smoking- you know the songs aren't true/real, but you listen to it anyway , just to feel good.
Usually I have this theory , that no matter how good an Artist is , he can't have an Album 100% full of good songs.. at least there's one song you wouldn't like. I got this album a few days ago and made an exception for Mike. :)
whats up with the non-smoking comments, this isn't a song about how smoking is bad or uncool. its a metaphor comparing smoking cigarettes to listening to gangster rap. that's not even hard to figure out.

I don't get the comments that say "still listening to this in 2016?" Like yea we are dumbass bc we like it like what are we not suppose to listen to it if it's like more than 2 years old
"Everyone exaggerates a tiny little bit To make that shit sound more gangster than it really is" - "I dont want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool" The truth about mainstream.

It's just like a cigarette, Addictive.

Once in a while, but between me and you

I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool
[Verse 2]
Let me tell you something that I realized tonight
My hip-hop radio's like Marlboro light
They both selling stories and they sound about the same
Cigarettes say they safe, rappers claim they really bang
We don't care if it's true when we just lay the money down
We don't believe the words, we just love the way they sound

And everything they say's got the truth twisted up
And twisted up's what I want, man, I can't get enough
'Cause even though we know it's all just a big bluff
We just light another up, what, we don't give a fuck!
[Chorus]
It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do
Once in a while, but between me and you
It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled
I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool
It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do
Over and over, but between me and you
It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled
I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool
[Bridge]
Man, listen to my words, listen for a while
Lip service radio, don't touch the dial

Happy about third year anniversary on this random comment
Where is he underrated? This guy is SOOO famous. Me n dudes in Russia always play his discs on home parties

I was just thinking they should release a new fort minor album but ....

This song is so relevant in today’s rap culture
It just gold 🏆🏆🏆🏆. And him his Writings.
"We don't believe the words, we just love the way they sound."
That's modern life in one sentence right there.
Dudes lyrics have been keepin me alive since Linkin park. Had his raps on repeat for a year straight
Mike is a brilliant lyricist. I'm not into hip hop at all, but this kind of music and lyrics has a theme so universal and durable, it is difficult not to like and respect it.
The more I listen to today's rap tracks the more I cringe and the more I respect Mike Shinoda more and more, getting closer to call him a legend
Shinoda is a legend for sure.
A real artist and a down to earth guy.
He is a legend
Yes he is . it's 16 years later and people still coming back over a cigarette song lol. Legend!!!
Mike Shinoda, Macklemore, Slug (atmosphere) , BoB, Man.. All these "real talk" rappers are rising up. I love it. It brought me back to rap.
Macklemore is a douche though.
B.o.B. sucks
rising up? this song is almost 10 years old
What about eminem (not shady).
