Initially, Camila was meant to sing Closer, but she ended up ghosting The Chainsmokers so the song ended up going to Halsey. Which version do you prefer?

I really don't think this is the full story, don't forget that these collabs are not* made by artists only, two whole ass companies are involved. A big chunk of this story is missing for sure.
Closer is one of those songs you listen to on repeat for a month, forget about it for a year and listen to it on repeat again

the song actually fits halsey's raspy voice more, it added dyanmics and i think its one of the reasons why it's not easily forgotten and is really a Hit. No tea w camilla, luv her. But her version made it sound more of a typical popsong , so yep
They’re so different 🤯 Hasley’s voice is sadder meanwhile Camila’s is full of passion, they both show completely different emotions

The thing about Halsey is that she doesn't feel like she's singing, it's like she's talking to us. Which I personally really like.

Deffo the song made for Halsey. Halsey always sounds depressed when she sings somehow and it works so well for this song.
It’s a sad song, lyrically at least. The characters have both hurt each other before and are going to keep hurting when they part ways again. They can’t get over each other but can’t or won’t let themselves be together. Camilla’s voice and lyrics are too hopeful

i enjoy camila's lyrics much more, they're definitely more interesting than halsey's. but i do think that halsey's voice suits this song/genre better

Halsey's lyrics are superior. Four years, no calls, now you looking pretty in a hotel bar is better stringed together than old flame young star, now you're looking pretty in a hotel bar. Not to mention timeless. Anybody can sing four years, no calls relatably and wholeheartedly while feeling it with their whole chest practically forever, no matter what age you are or whether you've been some kind of star or not. How long will you be able to sing "old flame young star" without feeling like the lyric has passed you? If you were 34, 22 during the song's release you're 42, 30 now, definitely not a young star anymore. It's a recipe for a song to age badly. Halsey's lyric completely eliminates that. You look as good as the day I met you, I forget just why I left you is also a far more cohesive and structurally sensible lyric than You remind me of a sunset, color my sky so I forget. On top of that, it complements the Chainsmokers' first verse, "Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you", and the meeting storyline is kept alive. Halsey's lyrics tell a flowing story about longing for a past fling. Camilla's lyrics are attempting to use cliche things that are commonplace in most songs to describe a long-lost romance. "Pull the sheet off the corner of the mattress that you stole from your roommate back in Boulder" seals it all, and is a lot more original than trying to describe sunsets and coloring. If she wanted to the sky to describe the romance, she could've taken a leaf out of Taylor Swift's book. She's sang a lot about painting skies and she actually does it well every single time.

Yeah and I feel like that's what makes it so out of place in the song. Closer feels a lot more about reminiscing about the good times you had with someone you've fallen out with and her version just kinda makes it sound like someone in love thinking back on the early days in their current relationship.
