DUBAI - I'm not a fan. Everything is brash and over the top. Burj Khalifa, huge shopping malls...

- Dubai was chosen as a natural Emirates stopover on the way to Australia, but the city would never be my first choice of stopover location.

feel like i missed an episode where you fly for 60hours with 4 airlines to get to Dubai on split fares
And no sleep!
It’s because he took Flix bus. 17 buses and 4 ferries.
@@JurgenADV😂😂 You stole my thunder I was just about to say that!

You must be very proud of Blair. A fine young man who doesn't mind being with his dad!
Going up that Tower would make up for everything else for me, incredible views. Thanks for sharing.
When you were up the Burj, the view was like you were looking over a model village! And was that the Forth Bridge I saw at 9:06 !!! Funnily enough, the last place I saw QE2. You made your Dad proud by staying there :) Great video, but must admit, after a couple of days there I think I'd be hankering for the fresh air of a deserted Scottish island!
I just got back to Canada from a work trip to Dubai. I can confirm that the air quality was awful!
How lovely to be able to stay in that hotel. It's an ocean liner rather than a cruise ship I think? The old city is so much nicer than the wretched new stuff.
I'll bet old city will still be there in 100 years, and the new stuff will have crumbled to toxic dust.
The old city is what all of Dubai was like right up until the mid 80's.
I look forward to following your and Blair's adventures in Australia!
Your content gets better, I’ve really warmed to this channel

Bingo
100% Agree
Great video, must be very satisfying knowing you're stayed in a hotel your fater helped to build.
Dubai and the UAE is still on my bucket list of travel destinations as I love modern architecture..
But totally understand and respect that it isn't everyone's proverbial cup of tea.
Scott the QE2 is in my opinion the most iconic ship in the world. I watched her being built and launched as a child and I finally fulfilled my dream and sailed in her before she left for Dubai, it breaks my heart seeing the way the inside of her has been ripped apart as she was as beautiful inside and she is outside.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.
I'm from Southampton and grew up watching her sail. I now live across the bay from Cádiz and see all the liners there
I never liked Dubai , it’s way over the top for me, it has a lot of nice buildings sure and things to do, but I love exploring old buildings and castles , see old architecture. Example Spain has a lot of old moorish design and architecture, old churches, but still has some new architecture as well . A good blend , I would travel to Spain any day over Dubai ,and it’s probably cheaper as well, great work Scott, on your way to 100 k . Well done mate
I describe Dubai as a 10 year old playing Sim City. It's great for a holiday, but I wouldn't live there, certainly not retire there.
As a fan of human rights, this isn't somewhere that's ever appealed to me, ever.
Criminal that the QE2 is in Dubai. Should be in the UK, if not still sailing the high seas.
Thanks for a real trip report on Dubai.
Thank Scott,
Another great video. I was scheduled to pass through Dubai a few years back but Covid cancelled the trip. Thank goodness. Watching the video I felt the same way I did my one day passing through Las Vegas. Keep up the good work. I appreciate your honest but balanced critiques. As well, I like how you include trip mistakes and snafus. Cheers.
Nice to see scott not stuck on a flixbus for a change
Stayed in Dubai in 92 when it wasn't really on the tourist map and was much more interesting. I couldn't live in those temperatures - just been through Hamad International in Doha and it was 32C outside at midnight! Many thanks for your vlogs - have watched and continue to watch them all. V much looking forward to Sydney where I've also visited. 🏴👍
First Scott, I am reading my newly purchased "End to End" which I am thoroughly enjoying. I also watched this vlog with considerable interest as the UAE [Abu Dhabi & Dubai] was my home between 1994 and 2013. I originally lived and worked as a teacher, deputy Head in Abu Dhabi before all the transformation occurred and back when the road between Abu Dhabi and Dubai was a normal road, one lane in each direction and speed humps [for camel protection] every 400metres. Journey time was around 2 hours. A transfer of schools to Dubai in 1997 took me to various apartments across the city so I instantly recognised your tour. Thanks for bringing back the memories although I too have no plans to revisit as by 2013 I had had my fill.
Bah! Friends of mine lived in the emirates when the only way between Dubai and Abu Dhabi was to wait for the tide to go out and drive a Land Rover down the beach.
take the bus next time Scott
Step 1: Glasgow to London (Bus)
Take a long-distance bus (e.g., National Express or Megabus) from Glasgow to London.
Duration: ~8-10 hours
Cost: £20-£50
Step 2: London to Paris (Bus/Ferry Combo)
Use a bus service like FlixBus or BlaBlaBus to get from London to Paris via the English Channel (ferry or Eurotunnel for the bus).
Duration: ~8-10 hours
Cost: €30-€60
Step 3: Paris to Istanbul (Buses)
Cross Europe using long-distance buses (FlixBus, Eurolines) or a mix of local operators. Suggested route:
Paris → Munich (~12 hours)
Munich → Belgrade (~12 hours)
Belgrade → Istanbul (~12 hours)
This leg will involve transfers but can mostly be completed by bus.
Duration (total): ~36-40 hours (excluding layovers)
Cost: €120-€200
Step 4: Istanbul to Dubai (Bus and Local Transport)
This section is tricky due to limited overland connections, political barriers, and visa requirements. A suggested route:
Istanbul → Tehran (Bus): Several long-distance buses operate between these cities.
Duration: ~30 hours
Cost: ~$50-$100
Tehran → Bandar Abbas (Bus): Take another bus to this port city in southern Iran.
Duration: ~18 hours
Cost: ~$20-$50
Bandar Abbas → Dubai (Ferry): Ferries operate across the Persian Gulf to Dubai.
Duration: ~6-8 hours
Cost: ~$50
Time: The total journey could take 8-12 days, depending on schedules and layovers.
You'd absolutely love the plave when you got there ..
:)
Thanks Scott for sharing your fantastic video with us
Riding the Abra is always a favourite of mine when at Dubai. One part of it that has some ounce of authenticity.
A place that holds no appeal whatsoever. I’m pretty judgemental about the type of person who’d choose to make that their main destination. Safe travels boys!
Yeah everyone in the video looked a bit bored to me.
Many who haven't ever been there rave about what a great place it is to live !
It's a dust bowl sh**hole, amd completely artificial and expensive. Avoid it.
yes, unnecessarily judgemental.
There’s an old video that actually about the building of the Erskine bridge but it features the old QEII on its maiden voyage down the Clyde. Dubai has changed a lot since Michael Palin got the Dhow from there on Around the World in 80 Days
Oh! Such fond memories of that show. I must re-watch my DVDs! The commentary on the DVDs stated the Dhow episode was slated to be a few minutes - but quickly turned into and entire episode when they realized what magic they'd recorded.
Anyone, particularly watching this channel, who hasn't seen that show needs to find the time! Buying it on the BBC, if still available, is worth the price.
@@R.DaneelI also loved his "Pole To Pole" series just a couple of years later when he was travelling through the Soviet Union as it was literally collapsing, and what resulted was a travel documentary witnessing history as it happened. As for Dubai, a friend from school lived there in the 1980s and it sounds a LONG way from what is there now....don't know what I would think of it.
Dubai is awesome. Brilliant place. Hope to see you filming in Sydney somewhere. Enjoy the trip.
Blair is such a great boy. He reminds us of our son Elliott. He’s a credit to himself and to you.
I enjoy your videos Scott, this one kicked in my fear of heights and I was only watching a video.
Wow, what a coup to say that your dad helped to build it. Enjoying your programmes, thank you.
Passing through the airport on my way to Thailand is about as much of Dubai I want to see.
We lived there for 3 years! Nothing like it is today though. Did not like it then and I don’t think it has improved.
Don’t blame you Scott! Been around that area years ago in the MN. It wasn’t like this then of course! Cheers from Oz.
Mmmm
All the charm of Cainryan it would appear from port, with the joy and excitement of Gatwick Duty free shopping centre thrown in !
Why anyone goes there or stays there is beyond me, and at least you can get a pint in Cairnryan
It’s what I had expected to be honest and when you do ask somebody that’s been there it seems all they can say is shopping centre is big ! Like being trapped in Gatwick departures for a week 😨
Brilliant stream, entertaining and informative as always! Nicely done Scott and Blair
I used to transit throught there when I worked in Saudi Arabia back in the 90's; it's certainly changed!
My one and only visit was 25 years ago. It wasn't for me then, it certainly wouldn't be now.
I would not choose to go either . Water for the hundreds of golf courses that serve the rich at the expense of the wonderful mangrove swamps and its unique biodiversity amongst other things . . Thoroughly enjoyed the video as always . Safe travels Scott & Blair
Dubai looks so austere. Just a lot of modern buildings so it is not high on my bucket list. Scott, you are getting close to 100k subscribers. I hope that all who view these videos will hit that subscribe button and help you get there.
Totally agree,i worked out there for several years, very expensive and I called it a wannabe New York
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It’s great to see young Blair again - 👍👍
My late uncle also worked building the QE2. He was a joiner.
Also quick tip for the Metro in Dubai . Upgrade to the VIP carriage. There’s also a woman only carriage.
Dubai is all you say Scott but take it for what it is and it’s brilliant for a few days, I used to go regularly for business and I grew to thoroughly enjoy my Dubai trips - looking fwd to the Aussie content 👍
You know, i felt the exact same way about Dubai, i use it for the Airport mostly when flying long haul, i find it, like you, brash and fake with a little seedy underbelly. But last time (March), you know i started to get it, it's still brash and over the top, it's still built using...questionable labour practices; but coming from the UK, everything is broken, everything is depressing, it was like a breath of fresh air, i could wonder round the clean streets and nobody was scamming me, nobody was mugging me at knife point, everyone was polite, the metro worked and was clean and cheap.
I am still not sure i'd want to live there, but i can't help but admire them for trying something different, whilst Europe appears to be failing.
so amazing to stay in a hotel that used to be ship, my dream hotel for sure and thanks for amazing tour of dubai.
A really amazing video , enjoyed this ,that was a tall building, brilliant, 😊
Really enjoyed this video really looking forward to Sydney video
I had the same reaction when I was there. How many luxury shopping venues do they need. They do have some great architecture but, generally I thought it was one of the least interesting places I've ever seen.
Aye, good one Scott. I actually quite liked Dubai, been twice. That wee loch at the shopping centre that looks on to the Burh Khalifa, at night time there is a lit up water display, its amazing. Enjoed the video, looking forward to the Australia trip video.
Hey Scott,
Are you doing like a meet and greet in Australia?
I'm sure you're having lots of fans here you wanna say "G'day".
Greetings from Adelaide.
We were in Dubi 2013, and most of what you videod brings back many happy memories, looking forward to seeing you in Sydney, my Son lives their now and we're going out next November, so we have a intrest in seeing what you both do next ......😊
My late Dad also worked on the building of the QE2, he was a joiner at the time and helped with the wood panelling in the cabins amongst other things. I wonder if they knew each other. His name was Robert Robertson (not that one!) and he came from Greenock.
The geezer playing the interminable flute 🎶 seems to only know one tune.
Love you channel . Keep up the travelling,
Was your dad looking down and saying, 'Good choice of hotel, son'?
I suspect he was probably looking down and saying, 'You never made your bed when you were 19 either!'
A great video, thanks. 👍🏻
I've lived in the Emirates for 20 years now, I try to avoid Dubai now too busy for me, was lovely back in the day, too many "influencers" around now.
Souq madinat is still worth a visit though.
I did a mini cruise on the QE@ in the mid 90s too! What a stately lady she is.
i heard your dad shouting, 'no its not a good choice of hotel son!!! a pint back in scotland is only £2.50' hopefully no Tsunami
Scott the old town looked like a film set.
Blimey, Scott, when you went to the window up there and looked down I suddenly felt a bit dizzy.
I don’t think Dubai is for us so I’m glad you went and showed us around a bit. Good plan to stay on your Dad’s ship. 😊
This is another great trip with you have an awesome week
thank you.🧋👋🇬🇧
Dubai looks truly grim judging by this video... Absolutely woeful. Loved the reference to your father building the QE2! Great video as always Scott and Blair
Istanbul over Dubai every day of the week and twice on Sunday
Nah Istanbul has no character just like Dubai
You drunk?
Hi Scott we spent 2 days in Dubai on our way to Sydney I cruised on the QE2 3 times superb ship could take all weather all over.By the way wouldn’t go back to Dubai….no character,no atmosphere,no nice street cafes..if you like malls then maybe your thing just not for us.Noticed the model of I think the Iberia the P&O ship which I was on when I was 6 !!! Not yesterday
A wee stay over in DXB is class. I did a 24 hour stopover recently returning to Glasgow from Bangalore. The downside was it was 109F that day. You showed stuff I hadn’t seen from previous visits so will look out for on future stopovers.
You couldn't pay me to go to Dubai 😂😂😂
Old city of dubai looks nice 😊.
Dubai doesn’t do much for me. We’re flying out to Perth in February via Dubai and got a quick transfer, couple of hours or so, have no interest in the place - unlike Singapore this year which was great.
Great travelog, agree with your assesment, It comes across as a bit soulless, a giant shopping centre in the desert, I know from a firm I used to work with who had offices out there, 30 years ago it was a very different place, but then isn't everything.
Great video as always Scott
Blaire, I wish my dad was as cool as yours. Keep up with him.
fantastic video i would live to go to Dubai
Great video guys, looking forward to the next part. Maybe Blair can start a bit of recording and work to the camera. Next step his own channel for us to subscribe to! All the best for a great trip :)
Hoi, Scott, an real interesting story, well done. Been there several times, also my opinion, money counts first and above everything!. Used DXB as a transfer station, lot´s of destinations available, for example Oz!. Done a couple of the smaller and mostly more local places like AlAin/Fujairah. Greetings, Markus
Icehockey in dubai mall is hilarious
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the NHL had an exhibition series there at some point
@ianpilkington2037 don't think they will as there isn't much room for spectators. But if they do I will ve going back there
Last time I was this early, those buildings weren’t built yet.
So there's nothing non touristy to see or do. I live in non touristy Spain and love it
Wow, What a great trip Scott, I'll never think of you as cheap again !😂😂. QE2 hotel seemed deserted, it's not going to pay for it's self like that. Have a great trip, I look forward to the videos, stay safe, all the best.👍
Like the inside of the Overlook Hotel from the film ‘The Shining’
Saw the QEII being launched many, many years ago with my father❤
Been a few times on stop overs and did 2 weeks, Overall very expensive for what you get, Best place is Carrefour for food shopping and other stuff. The Shopping centres with all the brands are dearer the then UK - Yep you can find everything cheaper in the UK. Carrefour is best.
Just be warned- people have literally been arrested for posting criticism of Dubai (or businesses in Dubai) on the internet.
I wish I’d known you were here, I would’ve bought you a beer or a coffee to get you to cruising altitude 😂
Never been, but i'd have to agree with you. I expected your floating hotel to be very busy, not many staying there i guess !
Thanks for using the nautical words, Stern and Bow, so many ignorant people on ships now unlike when as a teenager I sailed from Southampton to Sydney on a P&O liner (not a cruise ship) with knowledgable and sophisticated passengers, journey of a lifetime.❤😊
At 0:04 is that: "No you cant ?" 🤣
Glasgow, Scotland says "hi"!!!
wow what an amazing view but i dont think i have for those heights
Travelled on QE2 in 1983 from Southampton to New York! Wonder why the Brits can’t hold on to their heritage? Lived in Dubai for 5 years, enjoyed it tremendously. Did I miss an episode Scott, or is Paisely a bus ride from Dubai? 😊
I had an eight hour stopover in Dubai , worst eight hours of my life
The QE2 hotel could really do with some loss-leader pricing to fill it up a bit. Even crazily so - $50/night or something. The Mary Celeste feel was, as you said, strong. They aren't doing themselves any favors. They'd probably make the money back on a few beers.
Cool vlog
You chose the 2 most touristy malls and book the Burj online to save money.
Unfortunately, this is what most people want or expect when visiting Dubai, but it does not reflect the real Dubai many call home.
The workers, I imagine.
@@davidcritchley3509 Yes, us workers and retirees, with real lives who live here. We can avoid the tourist areas and know how to get discounts/offers at shops and restaurants or buy at a lower price.
It is like most major tourist cities, there are 2 sides
I’m not a fan of heights but I think the trip up the tower is a must 😬
I was in Dubai in 1974 for the first time, it was then a small fishing village. It had one 'posh' hotel where we spent the night before flying to Beirut and then onto London then onward to Fife for leave from the MN.
Hardly a small fishing village ! My first visit was in October 1975 not long after the Intercontinental had opened (Dubai's first international standard hotel). Of course Dubai was totally different then but it was a vibrant trading port with plenty of activity in what would now be called the 'old town.'
@alexmcwhirter6611 it was when I was there in early 1974.
@@Bruce-1956I know. But it was only one year later...things don't change that quickly.
Hello Scott, another great and interesting video, thank you!
Just out of interest, did you name your son after Tony?
It's doesn't surprise me you don't like it! 😂
Scott doesn’t like anything bless him! 😊
@SimonLiddo definitely would not like the prices in Doobs! 😂
Nor does Blair by the look of it 😂@@SimonLiddo
Victor Meldrew strikes again
I think you’d have preferred the Premier Inn at DXB 😂 Nice to see the QE2 being preserved as a hotel though. Would have been better if she was preserved in the UK, but at least the climate there will keep her in good condition for many more years. Surprised you didn’t say you’re “at cruising altitude” up the Burj thingy. Definitely more interesting looking at it than from it. Like Blackpool tower.
I reckon you were kind to give 2 out of 10 I would give maybe a 1, I know the chicken was ok but the chefs should do better, and...and I have to ask Gary, how many goes did it take to get the review right? 😀, it was light one minute then it went dark and then light again, I'm thinking it took quite some time...I hope we'll see this in the outtakes sometime lol.
Good Morning everyone, thank-you for the video, Alister Ian Hoult, Carrying Place, Ontario, Canada.
