A note on the nipple rings and tassels. Together the rings are called Ryochi no Kan. The right is saihai no kan, and the left is tenugui no kan. I read that a tassel attatched to the right indicates rank and a hand towel or banner may be attached to the left. However on the example in the Brisbane gallery, both have tassels attached. An interesting design element considering these could be placed anywhere on the armour. It makes sense aesthetically to mimic the body but then it’s also adjacent to kink or fetish design elements. What do you think about the mostly all male squads and their nipple ring body armour design?
