  • This is a tutorial video for both new, and experienced Total War players alike, in which you can learn how to win land battles in A Total War Saga Troy against the AI even on veteran difficulty level. It shows basics such as: how to command, group, move and order units in a battle as well as army battle tactics like ambushes, flanking, range combat and more. It's a guide on how to use units properly and how to fight an enemy AI army, but all tactics and moves can be used in multiplayer. I am using a balanced army, led by Hector, composed of infantry sword, club, shield and spear units along with javelins, bow(archer) units and chariots against a similar army led by Achilles.

    In this legendary age, heroes walk the earth. Yet it takes only a single impulsive act to spark a conflict that will shake the world. Audacious Paris, prince of Troy, takes beautiful Helen from her palace in Sparta. As they sail away, Helen’s husband, king Menelaus, curses her name. He will bring his errant wife home - whatever the cost!
    King Agamemnon, wide-ruling lord of finely-walled Mycenae, hears his brother’s call. He summons Achaean heroes from far and wide, among them swift-footed Achilles and Odysseus of the silver tongue. The Greeks set course for Troy, towards inevitable war and slaughter. For there, on the battlefield before the great city, legends will be born…
    TROY is the latest Total War Saga title; inspired by Homer’s Iliad, it focuses on the historical flashpoint of the Trojan War, evolving the series with new period-inspired features.
    Through Total War’s unique blend of grand, turn-based empire management and spectacular real-time battles, Troy explores this epic conflict from both the Greek and Trojan perspectives - peeling back the layers of myth and legend to reveal the realities that may have inspired them.
    Experience the events surrounding the era-defining Trojan War, brought to life as never before. Realize your legend as one of eight iconic heroes. Dive into a character-led narrative drama and overcome your antagonists. Build your empire through strategy, statecraft, diplomacy and all-out war, as you conquer this vast and striking recreation of the Bronze Age

    Yes I gave thumbs up. Because it teaches helpful information. Even though it is for users who are somewhat familiar with the game already.
    But there needs to be a video explaining what the hell is Total War Saga Troy. Since nobody knows anything about any Total War game. Everybody is more familiar with Civilization and Age of Empires, but not Total War. So they might not know if they should even bother getting it free for 24hrs.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад +1

      Hello Shattered Knight. Thank you for your feedback and comment! My videos are aimed at new players, but I do expect them to know basic controls like right click to move, left to select and such as it is quite standard gameplay setup. This game also includes two tutorial battles which explain those things to players who might be playing an RTS game for the first time in their life. This is why I didn't go down to that level.
      As for the videos about explaining the Total War from the beginning that would take quite a lot of time to make. Since each game is based on the same principals and core gameplay a player could watch any one such video for any previews Total War game and he would be able to play this one. My videos are usually aimed at what makes each game new and different.

    • @shatteredknight1129
      @shatteredknight1129 4 года назад +2

      @@perafilozof Correct about controls. Incorrect about users being familiar with what this game is.
      User who are unfamiliar with this game will not know anything about it. Or any Total War game in general. Therefore, this is what needs explanation. Any claim of users being familiar is incorrect/false. These are users who have never played the game, and have no information/recommendations about it.
      For beginners who have already started to play the game, they will learn basic controls in the tutorial. So that doesn't really need much explanation. This is correct/true. So it's fine to explain more about how to win fights without going into too much detail about basic controls.

    What advancement in ai programming? The ai in this is very good in this game. Where is information on it? Where is the rest of the combat videos? There's only like a few more. But nothing about the different things mentioned here. How to use Aneas rabble and mob? What strategy is that?

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад +1

      Hello Shattered Knight, thank you for the comment and feedback. I don't know how many TW games have you played in past, but I have followed the franchise for 20 years, so my talk about the AI is directed at the changes that have been made to it during the years and each game in the franchise. This is subjective observation from my own experience and experience of other TW content creators and players I talk to. The reason why I haven't made any videos for TWS Troy and it's combat systems is because there is a lot of patching and changes implemented by the developers. I don't want to make a video and for it to become obsolete in a week. As for "How to use Aneas rabble and mob" please be more specific so I can write you an answer about that.

    • @shatteredknight1129
      @shatteredknight1129 4 года назад +2

      @@perafilozof I'll give thumbs up to your reply. It's very obvious you know this game well. Your battle video has some really good information on how to battle in this game. But that was not the question. The question was - "What advancement in ai programming?" There is no explanation. You never answered. It definitely seems smarter and craftier.
      But yes, it does make sense to wait for a bit of improvement on the game. Since the game is still undergoing much development until multiplayer. Even the recent patch was enormous. Even after the patch, I still find chariots to be OP. The battles are actually very well done and excellent. But really, if neither side is using chariots.
      The ai is not just more advanced in combat. The campaign ai is also amazing. Even some long time users are completely unaware of this aspect of the game. Here is the article on how this campaign design functions: www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/iqo5zq/you_are_playing_twtroy_wrong_advancements_in
      An important thing to note is that the information there focuses on normal mode as that article mentions. Since higher difficulty changes the game so that your faction becomes more of a target. Factions are all more inclined to try to kill you. Even for really experienced users, I don't think it's a good idea to boost the campaign setting beyond normal. If you really want to get an idea of how great this ai functions. So it's almost like you're playing a chess game in diplomacies. You want to always be aware of your interactions with other factions. As well as their interactions with each other. And constantly making diplomatic decisions based on what you want for your relationships.
      This is also important to know about the pillars. Since being a pillar faction doesn't necessarily mean you start off as besties. It just means you get a bonus in diplomacy when interacting with pillars. It's still your job to build all of these relationships from the ground up. So some will be easier than others. For example, Sparta (Menalaus) and Lycia (Sarpadoon) tend to be much easier and more friendly than others. Amazons tend to be quite rude and more difficult. But I managed to get a NAP with one of them within the first 10 turns by joining some of their wars that were far away. In order to improve attitude rating with them.
      In RPG games for a long time since D&D, there is a very standard method of progression that has been carried over to all of games. Which is that gaining each level is easier in early stages than it is in later stages. Since progression isn't linear. It's exponential. So as you progress, progression gets more and more difficult. So going from level 1-8 might require a certain amount of gameplay. Whereas, you might need that same amount of gameplay later on to go just one level from 15-16. This is not just exemplified in how additional pop points will progressively require more and more growth points. This is also exemplified in how supply lines function. Each hero you buy will create a larger and larger upkeep cost over your previous hero.
      Not only is this effective so it limits the user army to prevent them from just fighting everybody. So they actually need to use diplomatic strategies and work with allies to progress through the game. It also plays into the unique design of the factions.
      Hector is an example of a faction that has very strong and expensive units. He will be less inclined to field additional armies due to supply lines, in favor of quality over quantity.
      Other factions have a sort of middle ground of either economic boost to be able to afford more upkeep or economic discount so that upkeep is more cost effective. Odysseus is a good example of economic boost. He can use ports much more efficiently than other factions to boost food production tremendously. So his units, while very nice, aren't necessarily as strong or expensive as Hector. But he will have more capital to work with to afford additional hero for another army. For sort of a balance of quality and quantity.
      Aneas is the other end of Hector. He is all about quantity over quality. He has an inherent discount to light unit upkeep. This means the upkeep/salary he has to pay to his soldiers is so low, he can afford progressively higher supply line costs of adding more hero generals. As long as these additional armies are using these cheaper/lighter units. He has excellent tier 1 special units called, mob and rabble. These are very nice units for their price. Including a spear/shield that moves as fast as any typical speedy light unit. I suggest you study how these special units function to understand what I mean.
      The combat of Aneas that I had mentioned earlier is based on a rush and swarm style. His special starting bonus allows him to afford upkeep of many cheap units. Which is where his special swarm units come into play. The strategy behind this combat is to use your swarm units to absorb enemy engagement bonuses. As well as tire the enemy out. Typically, as armies get closer and closer, there will come a point where you will want to engage by rushing in those swarm units first. This means the enemy will start wasting their bonuses on them. You can then pull the swarm units back, and engage with your stronger units. Since these swarm units have pretty bad morale, they might just run away anyway before you even pull them out. Which is perfectly fine since they did their job. And they have expendable quality that won't affect the morale of your other units. The design of these swarm units also gives them some functionality in charge cycling to repeatedly pull them out and send them back in. Also, since they move at top speed, they also offer other functions. Like buffering enemy chargers as well as flankers very well.

      @shatteredknight1129 4 года назад +1

      @@perafilozof Also, as I mentioned about checking out Aneas. It might be a good idea to do a nice video on his style. despite the patches because of so many users having no clue at all how to use him.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад +1

      Hello Peter, and welcome to my channel! Thanks, I am glad to be of help! When you advance your army in lockstep and the enemy is far away it's safe to keep range units infront. Also, because of their range they have to be infront so they can fire for the entire the the infantry units are running into each other. If they are back then they will have less time to fire as inf gets closer. Also, its better they take the first enemy volleys rather than the infantry units as they will win the battle for you.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад

      Hello Chee, and welcome to my channel! For the weapons you have to look at the unit card, press I, and check the green description on the top. That will give you a rundown of the most important stats of a unit. If you see armor piercing then use that unit to attack enemy units with high armor. If you see fast flanker then use the unit as a flank or rear attacker. At the moment there is no real rock-paper-scissors between the units and their various weapons. It's more about unit armor and speed. So, axes against heavy infantry(high armor slow, speed), clubs against light infantry(low armor), swords works against all, spears against cavalry or for flanking. I will go more in dept about this in one of my next videos.

      Just keep in mind the unit with the lowest man count/health, gets merged into a unit with higher men count/health.
      So if you have a Rank 9 spearmen with 19 units left and say a Rank 2 spearmen with 40 units left, all the merge units are now Rank 2 with 59 total units. So be careful and smart about it! It's often easier to wait the few turns if you can.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад +2

      Hello Martin, and welcome to my channel. When it comes to soldier morale in battles you need to keep their flanks secure, friendly units at their flanks and back, general near by and chase off enemy range units because all of these factors can damage your unit morale. When on the campaign map, there are different stances for armies, bottom left corner, next to the portrait of the character leading that army. If you are inside enemy borders you can use the raid stance to feed of the land and prevent attrition. When you are moving across water there is also a special stance to speed up the army and spend less time in open water which takes away army morale and unit numbers. I hope this answers your question, feel free to ask about anything else.

      Hello "user with inappropriate nickname", and welcome to my channel. Indeed it does, and for me that is a huge bonus because I really didn't enjoy the static gameplay in Empire. I always found army maneuvers much more interesting when range units are not kings.

      Hello Mimi, and welcome to my channel. If you are asking about the mythological "creatures" you unlock them by conquering specific settlements where they can be trained after building the necessary buildings. Others you unlock by reaching the maximum cult tier with one of the gods. You can see which god unlocks which unit when you hover your mouse of that gods icon in the worship menu.

      perafilozof no like champion of phthia armies or champions of Troy?.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад

      Just like in each total war game, by training them at the highest tire army buildings. I have to be in front of the game to name it specifically. At work right now.

      @perafilozof  4 года назад

      Hello Adam, and welcome to my channel! What was the situation you were in when the AI didn't reinforce with an extra army in range?

      @@perafilozof yes when I'm attacking a fort the reinforcements are no longer ai optional is that right

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  4 года назад

      @@captainohcaptain9588 If I understand correctly what you are asking, you would like to give command of your own reinforcing army to a friendly AI? So your AI would be in charge of your second army? No, in Troy you get to command both the attacking army and all of it's reinforcements.
