🇲🇽Ecatepec in Estado de Mexico is often described as one of, if not the MOST DANGEROUS places in Mexico. In an effort to improve accesibility to Mexico City for the locals and to improve their safety, the TELEFERICO MEXICABLE ECATEPEC was introduced in 2016, a Cable Car system travelling for 3 miles through 7 stations from Santa Clara to La Canada.
If you're looking for Things to Do in Mexico City that is very much off the beaten track, you can head to Santa Clara Mexicable Station by catching the subway to Indios Verdes and getting a bus from there. Alternatively, as I did, you can walk from Ciudad Azteca, but be warned, this can be known as a dangerous area.

Congrats, you are the only one blogger had show other side from México. Yes, Ecatepec is not a touristic area, but you found a new place to enjoy and discover. The Ecatepec locals as in others metropolitan areas are good people who just want to live in peace, work hard for their families and try to be better day after day, but the salary don't help too much, that situation is one of the reason the scenary is not like Polanco. You are great, get more fun in México. Abrazo.

gracias Gustavo! you're absolutely right about the people. I found them to be very pleasant, particularly older women, just like everywhere in Mexico. The people in Medellin were similar, they work hard and just want things to be better. Hopefully this will encourage more people to visit and spend their money there. The donuts in La Canada were amazing ;-)

It's a really nice video... I lived in Ciudad Neza as a child, it is also categorized as a dangerous place, but I've seen images of how much it's changed since I lived there... I get your point, even though there is a higher risk of bad things happening in these places, I believe that fear only makes everything worse, and good people like you, are the ones who little by little, make things change for the better. Hopefully this video is a seed for that change.

Holy crap, man. You are really venturing into the “hood!” First of all, respect! Few people ever do that. And as you saw, not only is it generally safe, but there is a certain beauty to a place like that-including the helter-skelter, “poorer” but otherwise unique infrastructure. And what’s great is that the Mexicans there are just as warm and welcoming as those elsewhere. But people don’t know because they never go there. Even the sketchy guy who followed you was probably just interested in what you were doing since he has probably never seen a tourist in his town. Thanks for pioneering outside cdmx proper, I hope more people do that in the future. Great video!

Exciting journey to the cable cars and back. I liked seeing both the abandonment and graffiti at street level and the awesome and colorful views. Yes, I did know there were cable cars somewhere in Mexico City. When I visited I asked a several people about them and they either didn't know about them or told me it was a too dangerous area. I didn't go to the cable cars but now I wish I had. And now I remember how I knew about the cable cars, it wasn't from a blogger or travel video but a documentary about water problem there.

So I know the dangers, the lack of resources but also the beauty in culture. It’s hard to explain people who can’t imagine how those streets look where I come from and how the place is. It’s grown so much since I last visited.

If any blogger wishes to visit Ecatepec. I would just recommend you wear you oldest most worn out set of clothes you don’t want to bring too much attention to yourself from petty thief’s.
I would also recommend not to take your best equipment, carry the lease amount of things possible, no jewelry or fancy accessories. And if your robbed at a restaurant or in Public see what the locals do and just give up your possessions. Police is basically useless In Ecatepec your safest bet is getting help from local shop owners. They despite petty thief’s.

Thank you. I am an American, and have visited my friends in Santa Clara many times, the first time in 1985. I have some very dear, close friends there. I appreciate the realistic view of Ecatepec. Of course, I am not naive about the risk and crime there. But I appreciate the nuanced view, and realistic first person, instead of the typical "alarmista" gringo view of a place most tourist don't go. Br the way, I have walked the streets in Santa Clara, and other places in Ecatepec, and have not yet had any problem, besides my pocket being picked on the Metro Subway (in CDMX). The only thing that irritated me, was your British pronunciation of Spanish. ha ha.

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  5 лет назад

Haha thanks Richard, my Spanish is hit and miss, sometimes it's great, sometimes it's awful. I think in the US there's much more exposure to Spanish, not so much in the UK (I learnt German for 7 years), so it has never come naturally. Fortunately, this was about 9 months ago and over Christmas I purposely learnt how to pronounce the letter R in Spanish much better. It just doesn't exist in London English.I know what you mean about alarmista gringos! Again, in the UK, there isn't the same view of Mexico as in the US (probably due to the US proximity to Mexico), so it always makes me laugh how some Americans have been influenced by mainstream media. Thanks for watching!

Some Mexicans may thankyou for making a video on the Mexicable. However, please remember that when the locals suggest you not to visit or do certain stuff, it may be better to listen to them. First, because of your safety; most mexicans would not like to know that something bad happened to you. Second, because the "good" a video of the Mexicable may do, cannot be compared to the harm a video on "I got robbed, carjacked, etc in Mexico" would translate to. Mexicans are working hard on trying to solve many of the country's security problems and have achieved certain success with loads of places worth visiting and that will give you a good example on what living in Mexico is like, culture, tradition, etc. Please don't risk yourself... it's not worthy.

Well for be honest, actually if it was a reckless decision, I will not lie to you, Ecatepec de Morelos in Estado de Mexico (metropolitan area of Mexico City) is one of the dangerous of Mexico, but gladly you are ok, and so good if you enjoyed the trip by the cableway.
The coolest places in Ecatepec are moved around the cycle path of eje central, the comercial area of Las Americas and the Ehecatl park.
But the coolest and safest places in the metropolitan area of Mexico City (if you want to visit) are: ciudad satelite in naucalpan de juarez, interlomas in huixquilucan de degollado (close of santa fe) cosmopol in coacalco de berriozabal, some places in atizapan de zaragoza or cuautitlan izcalli (take the tren suburbano in estacion buena vista) and Tepotzotlan; also the metropolitan area have the mexibus brt system (just like metrobus)...however take account the recommendations of the locals...be safe.

Thank you David for showing us that part of CdMx... I think that you pass very well your message. You're a London-boy and commonly they show us the best part of that great, wealthy world's capital... but, as a inhabitant of those great cities, you know thata they also have those places considered by many like non-for tourists, but that at the end they of course have their "local charm". I mean, your message is very clear: be caferful, be consciuous, be smart, be responsible... but not pre-judge and enjoy! Thank you again for loving so mucho this city and show real things to world... WOW! As I noted after you posted your Instagram photos - thank you so much for showing something that is not commonly referred to on RUclips or in CDMX guides. I really want to go for a ride. It is too bad they did not connect the cable car to a metro station. You mentioned bus options - did you notice if it is possible to take a taxi or uber to the Santa Clara cable car station? There is no way I would walk. I know you are younger, more adventurous and travelling solo - but you should be very careful - especially about areas, like depicted in the video, that are not busy. But what a great view! Lucky that you got a nice clear day. Thanks!

I played a little basketball with the locals and watched a bunch of kids play soccer
Plus there was a marketplace there that I explored. It didn't feel unsafe at all which somewhat surprised me.
But thanks for posting this vid. My impression was that when you're in Mexico City it's so modern that it's almost like being in a very Mexican dominated American city. Almost.

Awesome video, David. I can attest all of Ecatepec is not dangerous, but it is a huge city so I might just be speaking for the part my parents live in. Do you know that Ecatepec, bad parts included, has murder rates lower than the municipalities of Cuauhtémoc (where the zócalo is) and Gustavo A Madero (where the basilica is)? There seems to be an obsession in the media with presenting Ecatepec as one of the worst municipalities in the country, but clearly that is not the case by any metric. Ecatepec is also the second largest city in all Mexico, but at this point I think it is a delusion to consider that cdmx and the surrounding cities are different urban areas. I must say though, that because of its industrial past, Ecatepec is kind of boring. There are still a lot of big factories, but no nightlife or cultural activity. That might change in the future, or not, but the living conditions have improved over time.

I was in Ecatepec in the 70’s when I was in primary school to visit the site where Morelos (Independence hero) was executed by the Spanish. It was not more than a bus stop then on your way to see the pirámides, very few people lived there then.

Very cool!, I been few times there I thibk so but never via Mexicable!, but I took a similar one obce when I was almost missing my fly from the termial of the airport to the other!, so personal of the told airport told me in that case we can take that cable for free with your airplane ticket and that bring you to one termial to the other for free in a very fun and quick way!!, it was really cool! Now you know if you went by mistake to the wrong terminal in the airport to take your flight, just ask for this way to go to the right terminal 😉 😊
