Oh, and one interesting thing about the PlayStation version: According to a programmer who worked on the PS1 port, he said that the PS1 port was rushed due to EA's pressure of shipping a number of launch titles for the PS1, and that they didn't have enough time to tune the gameplay and fix the framerate issues.
@@RetroCore Exactly this. If Namco were able to put arcade & arranged soundtracks in Tekken, Visual Concepts should not have had a problem putting both arcade & new BGM in Viewpoint. The arcade soundtrack is a lot better.
I don't know why the PS version doesn't get more credit. I think it's beautiful and I like the music more than the Neo Geo version. I picked it up for less than $10 while other PS shooters like Einhander, R-Type Delta, and RayCrisis are fetching around $100! That's ridiculous.
Everything about Viewpoint screams early 90s. The music, creating the graphics in 3D and rendering the models to create 2D sprites, Donkey Kong Country is probably the most famous example. A couple of years later developers were dabbling with realtime 3D and this sort of thing was mostly forgotten about.
Surprisingly, Sega included the Mega Drive version of their game under their Sammy label, Viewpoint, on the Mini 2. Yes, while the US got an official release, Japan and Europe never got one until then.

I don't deny that the Genesis version is inferior to the original on Neo-Geo, but I'm not sure I agree with the notion that it could have been better on that system. If the Wii was two GameCubes duct-taped together, the Genesis is the Neo-Geo, sawed in half. It's got half the speed, a fraction of the colors, and a less advanced sound chip. Cool the FM Towns music sounds really clear! Ive always avoided the PSOne version as the CGI graphics looked atrocious in screenshots, but actually, looks quite nice in its own way.
What does the FM Towns use for sound? Midi? Tracker? As one of the reasons the music was changed in Sonic & Knuckles on the PC was the PC could not do the voice samples in some of the tracks, yet the FM towns seems to be able to.
FM Towns sound hardware is quite powerful, kind of a blend of Genesis and SNES (6 FM channels, 8 PCM channels), also similar to some 16-bit arcade boards. Plus it had CD drive with ability to play digital audio, which apparently was used in most games.
Hey Mark, today is my day off work, so thank you for releasing this one day earlier, it matched my vacation perfectly. Also the video is fantastic, and of course, I love Viewpoint (although I'm a crappy player). Thanks dude!
Carlos Bragatto no worries man. Lucky for you I released the video a day early. This weekend I'm really busy so normally the video would have to wait but luckily I had it completed last night.
A thing to note about the PlayStation version is that the new music isn't even made for the game; it's just some techno/dance stuff that EA got the licenses to, which is why they're a rather jarring contrast to both the game and the original music, and in fact some RUclips uploads of said port end up giving the name of at least one of the songs in the infobox (usually stage 1's BGM, "This Will Be Mine" by Todd Terry). I will admit, though, that the aforementioned stage 1 BGM and the one from stage 2 are rather catchy, but the rest is just bleh, even moreso compared to the Neo Geo original's music. ...also holy shit that X68K port is a goddamned *joke*; I can't believe that that's how it actually runs. I love that even the *music* slows down during heavy drops, the fucking **music**. X68K deserved better than that, especially considering the always great Ving's stellar job on the Towns version. what do you think of the music in the sharp x68000 port? i heard it wasn't as good as the neo geo original. but i kinda like it, and i think it's a bit passable because i know the sharp x68000 only has one sample channel.
I honestly think the PS1 version could have been great had they had a lot more continues and an option to switch between the new music and the original Neo Geo soundtrack, so they could at least make things fair for newcomers and attract current fans of the game.
Great video, as usual. If you used turbo mode on the X68000 would it remove the flicker or just the slowdown. Hard to believe the X68000 port would be so poor.
Funnily enough, i was playing this on mame last night. Great looking shoot em up but i'm crap at them, so didn't get very far, may give it another try soon.

Hi Mark, I have another fun request to ask to see if your interested on doing so in the near future. Would you be interested on doing a Battle of the Ports video on the original Donkey Kong? Would be perfect to do seeing it was ported from the arcade to so many consoles. Thank you as always Mark. Anthony...
+Charlie Cat that's a great one that's on the list but unfortunately it's in the same situation as games like space invaders or Arkanoid. There are so many ports that it would take me forever. I'd have to do something like that when I have time off work.
shiru8bit not that many for a company that survived on making games for others. In Japan there are quite a few companies like that which all did better jobs. Then again you also have the likes of Jordan who make Nexus Interact's efforts look like AAA titles :)
Can you give an example of development (not publishing) company who pushed 3 or more games/year, and the quality was better than this? I'm certainly need to learn from them.
It depends a lot of the size of the team. Between 1985 and 1986 Konami developed 20 different games just for the MSX computer, none of them bad games (some of them are actually freaking awesome like Knightmare, Vampire Killer and Penguin Adventure). And they weren't developing games just for the MSX at that point. Though yeah, they also published their own games, I guess that would make a difference.
From 1991 to 1995 Team 17 developed 23 games for the Amiga Computers / CD32, also keeping a pretty high average quality overall. Some of those are just different versions of the same game for different hardware, but I guess it counts, as I believe on those 17 games, both X68000 and Mega-Drive versions of Viewpoint are counted individually
I also believe if someone could somehow catalog all games DEMPA developed back in the early 80s for computers most people never heard, you would get a much higher proportion of games per year than any mentioned here...... and most of the time they really did a good job.
im with you on the SEGA version could/should have been so much better but i still like it and glad the Genesis/Megadrive got the game for its catalog. although same developers, the X68 is quite different from the MD version. the PS1 could/shouldve done better but im not complaining much really because its such a nice version. man i would love to find that Saturn version. you ever find anything about it, let me\us know!
There was something about the NEO GEO that only SNK would be capable of doing good ports with their games. My guess is that the VDP of the console had some special quirks that only SNK teams would be capable of exploring. Look for all the ports of all those AES/MVS games - they got really good only when Dreamcast was available. That was very much for a console with a 68k for a main processor.
Love this game it fits in with my theory mechanical sea life makes a great shooter just like darius! its in my category of love it but suck at it lol, i spend my time watching the shadows under the ships rather than the ships themselves so i know where i need to shoot, and oh yes the ps1 version really was a let down.
@@RetroCore And guess what? Sega did buy Sammy's catalog of games way back in 2004, and Viewpoint is no exception. So, what they managed to do was include it on the Mega Drive Mini 2.
"The new choons take away a lot from the game" For you! Man like Sniper, Kurupt FM 108.9 on ya dial keep it locked you MUGS begs to differ. MasssiveGarage soundtrack insiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. Roumer has it, produced by none other then Decoy!
PS1 is still the best port of them all, besides the original neogeo's versions (mvs, aes, cd - since they're not ports). Ps1 is wasn't as 100% to the Neo but it wasn't crippled either, only a bit of slowdown, and some sound fx are changed. Personally i like the ps1 techno-ish music and the redone graphics are good on playstation, it's a bit of personal taste say this or that, but the original's are always iconic. I have both of these on the Neo and PS1 and both are great, PS1 versions is a bit like neoCD as it loads, and AES is instant.
I HATE the music on the PlayStation port, but I think the graphics were quite an improvement, even if they're pre-rendered, just like all the other versions.
I thought the X68K hardware was pretty similar to the Neo-Geo. There are NG ports on the system that are very close, if not identical... why should this have been any different? What I'm seeing actually looks worse than the Genesis, but at least the Genesis had hardware limitations as an excuse.
Mega Drive and X68000 ports should have been a lot better than they ended up being. I'm sure M2, Dempa or Wolfteam could have done great job with both of them. If XGM sound driver existed back in the 90s, it could have been used to recreate the Neo Geo music on Mega Drive sound hardware. Maybe Viewpoint should have been ported to Sega CD instead of Mega Drive just for increased processing power, CD rom space and in order to recreate the Neo Geo music perfectly with YM2612 and Ricoh RF5C164. Visual Concepts and EA could have easily done the arcade perfect port for Playstation but of course they had to screw it up someway. I don't like the overly glossy graphics. I can't understand why they had to create a new inferior soundtrack instead of just using the original Neo Geo soundtrack? All they had to do was just sample it to CD format, same way like with FM Towns port. Oh wait, here's a bright idea, why not just use the soundtrack of the FM Towns port? At least FM Towns port is competent effort. Neo Geo CD port is just pretty pointless due to being just like the cartridge version.
Ah, the XGM driver for the Mega Drive is a blessing. Darius 1 port showed that the Mega Drive could recreate the Arcade music perfectly. I believe the PlayStation music was changed to please the American market. You can tell that the music follows the more mundane style of what they though club / dance music should be during that period. Same reason why the music in Sonic CD was also changed. The felt the Japanese soundtrack was too "camp". Quite shitty really because I know nobody that preferred the crappy music in PlayStation viewpoint
The X68000 version is a massive DISGRACE for the hardware. I have no idea how it managed to be worse than the Mega Drive version.... Also, wait a sec. Did journalists actually believe the PS1 was doing real-time polygons? Wow. PlayStation bias is everywhere. The Saturn was a much better console imo.
This would have been a better watch with a more positive tone. There are many reasons for studios to release subpar games, not just because they're "numb nuts" or "don't know how to program" :|
What's wrong with a little attitude in these videos? Also, he knows who are good gaming programmers and who aren't. Tiertex, US Gold, and THQ are prime examples for those who aren't
I am surprised you gave me could be Md did much better. I thought it is the draft to the limit, console was slowdown on edge of quantity and size of sprites on screen, even if they limited the number of colors (so he could put more). It is one thing not to MotherBase to regard 2000 as a (version clone or spiritual) us in that category, since the game has exaggerated alike as the crab at the end of a level besides having musical issues of the same gender, even nivelesles to keep her close.
davidvfx the Mega Drive has a CPC that could have run Viewpoint as it is without any slowdown. Despite the strange angle the game is only moving sprites around. There are many more complex games on the system with no slowdown or very little. I wish someone like Technosoft had the chance to make the port.
Retro Core sorry for the bad englis (Google trasletor). And what do you thing about MotherBase2000 (32x), is like another versión unoficial this game. why no include in this battle port.

I have the PS1 version.... and its great for the age
It was PUBLISHED by Sammy.
Yeah, found that out after making the video.
@@RetroCore And guess what? Sega did buy Sammy's catalog of games way back in 2004, and Viewpoint is no exception. So, what they managed to do was include it on the Mega Drive Mini 2.
"The new choons take away a lot from the game"
For you! Man like Sniper, Kurupt FM 108.9 on ya dial keep it locked you MUGS begs to differ. MasssiveGarage soundtrack insiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. Roumer has it, produced by none other then Decoy!
Hard to believe there is such a bad port for the 68000
I know. No effort at all was made there.
LOL, I just realized the MD version used similar, if not the exact same shitty FM drums used in Chinese bootlegs! Wow.
Just goes to show how crappy the sound engine is for this game.
Indeed.
Oooh a day early!
Harolds Stuff yep. I'm very busy this weekend so I got this out early.
Top video as usual, thank you.
Where's the 32X port? As far i know its uses real polygons for the ships, the rest looks like the original
There is no 32X port. You're thinking of Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 which was also called something else in Europe I believe.
Yeah, the music isn't very good on the PlayStation port. I see no reason why they needed to change it.
Visuals are good, despite being prerendered, though.
PSX=No 1.
What is the best?
chakanbhz the original Neo Geo version followed by the Neo CD them FM Towns.
thx.
What is the name of the song that starts at 13:04?
It's the music of level 6, the best track in the game. Not sure if it has a name.
All I can say it's the music from stage 6 but as Zervus said, I also don't know the name.
thank you so much guys...
There is no reason for such an awful port on the SHARP X68K that machine is a powerhouse
Worst arcade port to the Sharp X68000?
Quite possibly.
Viewpoint wasn't easy.
Mar Mac you got that right. It's a really tough game.
Oh yes, good old PlayStation BS from magazines was very common.
It is a shame about the X68000 version. That should have been vastly superior.
And what do you thing about MotherBase2000 (32x), is like another versión unoficial this game. why no include in this battle port.
davidvfx ah, motherbase 2000 is pretty cool. It's definitely inspired by Viewpoint. It's also a hard game just like viewpoint.
ps 1 wins by a longshot
