    In my understanding... he cut the roots because the brown roots can’t absorb any water (expired roots). If you don’t cut them cactus will die slowly. By cutting roots, the cactus will has new roots to absorb water.

      100%, คุณ Nivas Assumpinpong is one of the countries most well know growers, with a reputation for some of the finest cultivars in Thailand. All those guys (and girls actually) have a huge amount to do with Japan both as a source of plants and for their grow techniques.

      The babies he left on there are probably 2 to 3 years old. A lophophora the size of a half doller is a bout 3 to 4 years old

    That looked to me like a travesty. What an amazing specimen, must have been somewhere well over 40 years old.
    OK he cut off all the roots (which I wouldn't do) and then the adult-sized pups, but what was with cutting the main tuber of the parent plant? My understanding is that if you cut the tuber below the green part of the plant it can't regenerate any green on top and perhaps the top part of the plant will just dehydrate or rot.
    Is that right?

      He will replant the root mass for it to grow another cactus then the top section will be rerooted along with the pups he removed. These cactus are tough and will regrow with proper care.

      The goal of cutting the taproot is to encourage more fibrous root growth. This is common in tropic climates where large taproots are prone to rot. Fibrous roots suck up water easier and are less prone to rotting in humid climates. He left more than enough material to regrow.

    No se cual fue el motivo de cortar la raíz principal, pero me parece un gran error, varias décadas le tomo a esa planta llegar a ese tamaño para cortarle su raíz, posiblemente no muera pero detuviste su crecimiento por varios años más; para mi no había necesidad ni motivo para cortar un espécimen tan bello y de ese tamaño.

      @@Cafelito En esos tipos de clima tropicales es preferible no tener la raiz principal muy grande por que es propenso a pudrirse, en esos climas es preferible las raizes fibrosas pro lo cual cortando la raiz principal alienta a que crescan las fibrosas

      @@DanB1987 And i think he was telling there was something wrong in that root at the end of this film. There is that gray ring middle of that cutted piece. I think there was happening normal death of motherplant but now it will live longer with new root.
