I feel like British viewers wanted to project everything they hated about their boss on a single character, while American viewers wanted to see the boss they kinda wish they had, that's why they had to change Michael's character so much.
It was a change for the better.
It was an improvement on the entertainment value, for sure. In real life, I've worked for someone who was dysfunctional and painfully self-unaware like Michael Scott. One of the worst years of my career.
@@kvin9210 For the American version yes, the seedy ass hole boss wouldn't have worked for Steve Carrell, but it works great for Ricky Gervais
I really liked American Michael, he was someone you could hate and love in the same episode
And the humor is different between the two cultures.

Dwight was a lot like Gabe in season 1 (anime shirt, trying to ask out the purse girl)

like Jim & Jang
I think Tim is a little bit more awkward. In comparison, Jim is slick and easygoing, and his pranks are smooth, lol 😂
@@s.e.e455 Tim is basically Jim’s sad and depressed British cousin. He’s a 30 year old university drop out, who still lives with his parents, doesn’t have any friends, is jealous of Gareth (Dwight) because he has a much bigger social life than Tim does, has ambitions for a better future but isn’t motivated to peruse his dreams, and gets humiliated in front of his crush Dawn (Pam) and the rest of the office when Chris Finch (Todd Packer) and Lee (Roy Anderson) pin him to the ground, snatches his shoes and threw them over the office building, which leaves Tim having to walk home in his socks.
Basically the complete opposite personality of Jim
@@thomsboys77 Tim is not jealous of Gareth. Gareth is often shown to be jealous of Tim. Tim looks down upon Gareth and his social circle.
@@thomsboys77 almost, I think Tim is portrayed more of a sympathetic character, but with a lot more self awareness. I wouldn't say he is jealous of Gareth though... I think the point is that Tim sees Gareth the way the audience sees Gareth. In a sense, I think Tim is an extension the audience.
Pretty crazy how close these two are at the very start. It just goes to show how different American's like their comedy seeing how the show transforms.

The British version is believable, those characters could be real people being filmed for a documentary & that's what makes the humor work so well. The US version is a cartoon, not believable at all, but that's what makes the humor work so well. They both did their own thing & succeeded in their own way.
Besids David the British office was garbage
Maybe you have never lived in the US (can’t speak for Britain), but those characters are very real, even Dwight.

Weird that in the UK version, Gareth (UK Dwight) looks younger or more less the same age as Tim (UK Jim). It's the complete opposite in the US version where there is a clear age difference with Dwight and Jim; where Dwight is older and has more sales experience. Kinda makes sense in UK version where they're close in age which makes the enmity make more sense.
they were the exact same age I believe, the actors I mean
@@vladraduandrei5227 that makes it even better
wrong. in the final episode, jim says he cannot be dwights best man because he is younger than him, dwight answers something like "no, its like few months" cannot remember the exact line but that shows they are clearly in the same age
I wonder how Gareth and Dwight would get along if they ever met.
Well Dwight's actor was born in 1966 and Jim's in 1979 and it shows
The American version doesn't actually give the feels of a paper company. Maybe because the cast seems a bit too glam for paper company employees. The UK version looks very shady and that is how I can visualise a paper company office to be. Although my heart goes to US version. Thanks for giving me a headache.
You think Stanley is "too glam" of a character to work at a paper company?
we must have very different views on paper companies then
Phyllis, Meredith, Creed, and Stanley are....too glam?
You grow up in a cave? You consider THESE ppl "glam"????
come on... he is just right
**Things I noticed that makes me like the US Office better than the UK version**
-US actors look direcly into the camera, while UK looks at someone off camera
- US Dwight talks more monotone and acts crazy, UK one seems more like an average guy who is serious but normal.
- When Michael makes the joke about firing pam, he has a smile on his face which quickly fades after Pam cries
- The UK version doesn't focus on the boss' face as much, and when it does, he doesn't seem to feel as bad as Michael
- Basically the US version is more expressive/over the top and you can see their expressions and reactions more and camera placement helps.
Funny thing, it's those things about the UK version that make me like it more. Pretty classic examples of UK vs US humour.
The Us version is more American
You just described why the UK version is better lol
The english version is better, the US version had to be toned down after the first season, then it became mostly mid after that.
Or we can just appreciate the subtle differences in each version and just like both of them without having to say one is better over the other? Just a thought
if you wear headphones you can hear the US on the right of your headphones and the UK on the left. thats trippy
It doesn't work like that on mine
@@KaesarBrasilium oof
Works for me 😂😂
Most people prefer the US version as that's what they saw first but having watched the original (UK) when it came out, to me it comes across better. The realistic overall dull atmosphere of a dull office, not a hyped up whacky slapstick comedy which in all honesty is what US audiences prefer. The character of Gareth is absolute genius. The look of terror on his face at the end of the night out as he goes by in the sidecar of that couples motorbike is priceless.
This makes me wish the US and UK Offices crossed over
I prefer UK Jim and Pam's interaction along with Roy. Really feels like "forbidden flirting"
The forbidden rizz
Saw the UK version first when it originally aired and loved it. Took me a long time to give the US one a chance but when I did I discovered it was magnificent in its own way. Two wonderful series.
They’re completely different really. The American one just reminds me of Big Bang Theory or some shit, can’t get into it
UK version is more relatable. US version can only be related to if you are from US. Office UK is kinda similar the European office culture from the 90s. Both have their uniqueness.@@danculbert6349
I might be a little biased, but the US Office feels a little bit more like a real mockumentary due to the handheld sweeping movements instead of just cuts and the actors in the US put more energy and life into the characters. Like in the Jell-O instance with Dwight at 3:20 I feel more like the US's Dwight gets mad compared to the UK Dwight who sounds more confused and disappointed.
For me it’s the complete opposite. I find the acting in the US version a bit overdone while the U.K. original feels more like how people in real life would act
The us mockumentary style feels fake and the British one seems more realistic
@@dominicsmith8698 It seems like a Tv show. Which while that's what it is it's also meant to be a documentary. So, if you sent a crew with cameras to walk around and make sure they got everything they needed on camera, then I feel they would be handheld to not risk having a terrible ending where everything is offscreen. Plus, documentaries are handheld. I'm ranting though.
us is a sitcom uk is mockumentary they are both different and good i personally prefer us
Honestly I think most people say the opposite of that. The UK one kept it to a strict mockumentary style. The US one ends up just being more like a sitcom and the camera crew is hardly even noticeable most of the time, similar to parks and rec, it's supposed to be a mockumentary at the beginning but that part quickly fades and it's a sitcom remaining. Not saying that's bad thing, both shows are amazing.
Martin Freeman is a terrific actor
Gareth: He put my stapler in jelly again.
Dwight: HE PUT MY STAPLER IN JELLY AGAIN
You know what's weird? It's practically a shot-for-shot remake
Yeah with wookiees and battlestars and lazer swords.....
I think John Krasinski got off to a rocky start, because he was trying to directly imitate Martin Freeman's Tim, which felt weird. He got into it though later, and created a bit more of a different character than Tim.
uh, what?
@@anothergg2692 Read what he said, it’s not hard
I have to disagree with this one, I John played Jim as a more “to cool for school” kind of guy. If you listen to the way he delivers that opening dialogue he sprinkles a hint of that Jim charm in there, where as Tim does a better job with the awkwardness with his feelings towards the receptionist.
Seeing Jim get mad at dwight is kind of weird, in the other seasons he doesnt let dwight bother him because he gets back at him later with his pranks.
Umm wasn't US version of the The Office the first one? So, I don't see Jim trying to be Tim
The amount of editing that went into this to had to be crazy. Cool video!
It's interesting how uk one seems very real, like hey, this is their reality and we can't say Americans don't do that too because Arrested Development exists.
Yeah, I mean that was the point with it being a mockumentary and real cringe comedy, it was never gonna work for a US audience though 😂
My left ear Feels like it's in UK and right ear in US but my whole body is confused where should it stays in India or not🤣
the multiverse is pretty cool
You mean the us rip off with no originality
They both fit each countries’ humor. I personally prefer the cast of the US one better, mostly because Rainn Wilson’s depiction of Dwight. But other than that, they’re good in their own way.
I felt like I was in a trance watching this. I could not escape..
The British "Jan" sounds exactly like the automated Microsoft text to speech voice.
I relate to the US version more because of the actors' expressiveness. I used to work in an office where everyone was over the top. It was an interesting experience. Also I feel like the camera work is better in the US version.
the camera work is more authentic in the original. it's how real documentries from the early 2000s actually looked. the us version just looks like a sitcom.
@@chrisjansen9912The reason the US Office looks like a "sitcom," specifically after Season 1 and onwards, is primarily because of the color grading that was introduced after Season 1. Season 1 of the US The Office had that gloomy Raw/Camera Log Profile footage that the UK has, which made it look more authentic to an actual documentary. However, after Season 1, they changed it up, started color grading the footage, making it more colorful and got rid of that "office lighting" and atmosphere, making it appear more like a "show" than a documentary. And that was not all; they knew that to continue for many more seasons, they had to also change the writing, make story arcs, and character developments. In the process of doing so for the sake of longevity, they made it more like a show and not so much a mockumentary anymore. That was intentional though.
I see a lot of people saying they prefer the US version due to them being more energetic and I agree but I think it’s also based on how they are from different country’s, Iv never been to the uk or the us but people in the uk seem much more relaxed then us people in everything I watch unless they are trying to be different
I'm British and I prefer the American version
@@shippy1991 The big thing here is the two shows have different audiences to cater to. Preference is all thats relevant here- I think the quality of acting and cinematography is brilliant in both.
And when it comes to the whole joke of this show originally…being lower energy was completely part of the whole point 😂. But it’s one of the things that meant it was never gonna work for the American version
You can tell the difference the camera angles and focus on characters faces makes
That might just be the most accurate side by side comparison I've ever seen, the number of cuts makes them saying the particular word or sentences in identical way
Funny how the same words have so different meaning through the way it’s spoken
you joined youtube just to comment this lmao
Today I Learned there's a US version of the Office
Dwight is UNREPLA ABLE .
As much as I love the U.S version, I definitely feel like the writers took things in the wrong direction. I feel like the idea of "The Office" is genius. It's a tragedy disguised as a comedy. It shows people stuck working at a job they hate in a dying industry, and their struggles to find meaning and fulfilment in it.
The US version definitely lost the underlining tragedy to all of it by romanticizing things and giving all the characters happy endings.
I feel like it completely lost the point by the end of its run.
I think you’re missing a big detail, British office was 2 seasons long, American office was 9. It’s impossible for a show with this storyline to go on for 9 years without the comedy, without the happy moments, otherwise it would be torture. You can see Michael transition from a horrible boss, to a charismatic boss.
@@coffeehouse1126 who said it had to go one for 9 seasons?
@@Utonian21 Who said it shouldn’t have? I don’t understand the question. It went on because it could, clearly the demand was there, thus the writers changed their approach for its longevity, and in my personal opinion they got it right.
They are basically two different series after the first season of US version. Both are funny, but for me it's hard to compare those two because they are so different. British one is way more cringy and depressing but at the same time it's genius how it makes you laugh. US version is funny but mainly entertaining, it's like a fantasy. I love both.
@@coffeehouse1126Why the hell did the US office run for 9 seasons?! Jesus.
The most real thing about the UK version is the relationship between Dawn and Tim. Pam turning Jim down doesn't make as much sense as Dawn turning Tim down... Jim is cool, confident, put together, good looking, witty, at ease with himself, a lot going on outside work etc. Pam turning him down out of fear only makes sense if she has low self esteem, which we know she doesn't. Why else would she be scared to take a chance? Why would she see someone like him as a risk compared with someone who's failed to commit to her for years and treats her so poorly? If they were going to change Jim to that degree they should also have changed Roy to make the appeal of the safety he represents more obvious.
Dawn turns Tim down because despite them being made for each other, the way he leads his life makes it hard for her to make that leap. That's what makes it so painful to watch. The gift turns things around for him because it shows how well he knows her, sees her, loves her and believes in her in this totally selfless way and I think she suddenly twigs that by being together they can raise each other up and that's what love's all about. It's so real
Wait, the Britain Jim Halpert is that Hobbit, Frodo's uncle, Bilbo???

So the US basically copy and pasted the uk in the beginning?
Yeah, and if things took off pretty well then they would adapt the show to the American Market and let it progress. And it did, for many more seasons than the UK did. Sadly Ricky Gervais did make a movie a few years ago based about the return of David Brent and when I saw the trailer, it didn't look as good as anticipated.. Then, when it did come out.. It was utterly dreadful, barely anyone liked it. Worth a waste of his time and money all for nothing.

I love both so much
I am Irish, but we have much more close sense of humour to that of the UK than the US. I am very biased, but I find the UK office a lot more funny because I really dislike slapstick comedy. I also find it more relatable, but I guess the US office isn’t aiming for relatability so I get that. As I said, I’m biased as fuck so don’t hate me! Both are good in their own ways, we all have preferences.

i think it honestly just comes down to differences in culture because when i tried watching the uk version, i couldn’t relate to any of the characters! but i did in the us one. so i doubt it’s really a preference of quality for most people, just people relate to one culture more.

The Original British Office seems to have better delivery of lines. It has a more relaxed and bored tone with slower pacing which is a lot more realistic to an actual office. David Brent also seems much more annoying and dreadful than Michael Scott, which is much more fitting to his lines and the atmosphere of the office.
