well, considering nylon and polyester are highly flameble, cotton or wool are the best fire resistant! now ideally you would have a sweater that is a bit thicker so the fire or any kind of heat source has to get a lot more matter before it can properly burn. So considering that, i would think a christmas sweater would be the best option! oh and it of course has to be beige.

1:57 A good point. In my step dad's work they tried to make them mandatory but the men pointed out that the ties would cause a health and safety risk because they could get trapped in the machinery and cause contamination issues (they work with some rather sensitive materials). So eventually the workplace opted for polo necks instead with the work logo on the front. Much more practical for that kind of job, and it still looks smart.

      @Meeko1010100112 9 лет назад +73

Pretty much. From a practical perspective, a tie clip is the fix.
From an aesthetic perspective, I personally feel the necktie is more assigned to formal, professional attire then a bowtie does. I find bowties to mostly look like something my 6 year old cousin would wear to a wedding then a adult to a business meeting. Unless the business was something like making silly string.

I have my own sort of "theory" (if you can call it that) about how to classify ties.
    And here it is...
    - No tie is a sort of basic wear.
    - Neck ties are for formal/dress wear.
    - Bow ties are for special occasions such as fancy meetings, dinners/balls, and the sort.

Strangulation is stopping your blood veins in your neck from letting blood flow so your brains don't get enough. It's not stopping you from breathing (though it is a result of that).
Never wondered why it is so fast to be strangled, within a few seconds, while you can hold your breath without fainting for 4 minutes?

      You're welcome.

    • @probablythedm1669
      @probablythedm1669 9 лет назад +4

CapnTates It's not the inability to draw breath that would quickly render one unconscious. It's putting pressure on the carotid artery, thus restricting blood flow to the brain, that will quickly render one unconscious. The brain does not cope very well with lack of oxygen.
Of course in entertainment people die in all manner of ludicrous ways and survive other things that would very much be fatal, all in the interest of drama, so relying on entertainment for information on what is actually fatal or how long an injury takes to kill a person is not advisable.
Likewise hitting people on the back of the head is not a convenient off-switch. What you just did is probably killed that person through a hematoma in the brain, or at the very least gave them a possibly fatal concussion.

    • @nextlifeonearth
      @nextlifeonearth 9 лет назад +1

Daniel Mårtensson Yeah, that's what I said. Lloyd said the airways are the thing that's blocked by strangulation.
Thus my point, it'd be weird if it were just by preventing one to breathe, they would pass out so fast. Luckily it's not weird and you're letting the brain shrivel up by lack of blood flow.
Figuratively speaking, of course. That won't make a brain shrivel up.
And about the hit in the back of the head, it depends on how hard you're hit. The window of just knocking out with minimal damage is very small though. Easy to hit too hard, not hard enough or in some cases you give the person in question brain damage without knocking him out. That's the most unfortunate situation I guess.

I must confess I share your affection for the bowtie. I've worn them since I was twenty - and am now in my fifties. They're great. And yes, they do keep out of your work while remaining stylish.
The only true advantage of the dangly tie over the bowtie is that it conceals the shirt buttons on the placket. It's harder to get away with a shirt with dodgy buttons when wearing a bowtie. Otherwise, yes, they're wonderful. BTW, I like your trick of propping the loop open with your thumb - very clever.

I think any concerns with the practicality of a necktie can be alleviated with a tie clip, and I really think bowties look so juvenile. Maybe it's because they seem to be a favorite of the "classy hipster" crowd, but I just cannot take anyone seriously when they have one on. Neckties, on the other hand, are worn by politicians and businessmen and other powerful adults.

+Lindybeige I do like regular ties, and have always found bowties ridiculous. Regular ties are actually the only ones that fullfill their role of hiding all these tasteless buttons that keep your shirt closed (which makes any superficial comment about the merits of the bowtie irrelevant since they don't fulfill their role, making them inferior in every way). I guess it shows how subjective this whole matter is. Most of the problems you mention about ties flapping about and being generaly dangerous are caused by the fact that many people only wear half of the set. You're supposed to wear it with a tie bar or a tie pin to keep it where it's supposed to be and restrict the range of its movements.
And yes. Most super heroes wear dangling ties. Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent do for instance.

    • @mrmoth26

Actually ties are not for covering buttons. They are there to look cool and the regular (windsor) tie were made for some noble or royal guy that couldn't tie a bow tie. Windsor ties are and will always be inferiour in every way to bow ties.

I'm a cravat person. Every day, it's a cravat. And a cravat can be tied so that it functions as a bow tie or just about any dangly tie out there (though it usually hasn't the thickness required for something like the trinity knot), as well as things like ascots and barrel knots (generally I wears a abarrel knot) and day cravats and a whole bookload of others.
I am never without a waistcoat, either, and the reason we're in this situation with dangly ties (which in many languages are not distinguished from cravats) is that they were invented with the intention of tucking them into a waistcoat, and people have decided they don't like those as much anymore. And they used to be much shorter ties as well, reaching about the solar plexus, as it didn't matter because they'd be tucked into a waistcoat anyway. I think they became longer to account for the lack of waistcoat, but then people were meant to use tie clips, which they _also_ have decided they don't like anymore. Oh feck it anyway.

  • @raizin4908
    @raizin4908 9 лет назад +2

As for the name of the "regular" necktie, I like the name we have in Dutch: stropdas.
In Dutch "das" is the general word for a tie (or scarf), and "strop" means noose (a loop at the end of a rope, such as those used for hanging or lassos). Which would make "noose tie" the English equivalent.
"Noose tie" is short and very descriptive, similar to "bow tie," so it would make a good candidate for an alternative more descriptive name for the necktie. Though not as much as if the word noose were more commonly used.

Undead Viking he did state that they are simply without comprehensible necessity, but there are many occasions where it is required to wear one, hence the smaller evil is still the better choice.
then again, if you are prepared to go up against the criticism you might as well go in jeans and an unironed shirt, in the end it's all just pieces of cloth in different shapes.
he also commented on the stupidity of the suit in general, because you can't move in it freely. i think that was a while back though.

I'm not sure I completely share your opinions on "dangly" ties. Of course having a piece of cloth hanging from your neck sounds stupid and impractical, but the way western society has brought us (or me, at least) up is that bow-ties are very flashy and almost a little snobby, whereas ties tend to show a bit more sophistication. Just my thoughts though :-)

As British English lacks a word for the "dangly tie" ("necktie"), I would suggest the term "slip tie" (or "sliptie"). In the Scandinavian languages, that tie is called "slips", which is related to the English term "slip", meaning a long thin piece of something. So a "slip tie" would be the tie that has a long thin piece dangling.

The strangulation loop is as much of a design flaw as the Sontaran's probic vent. Maybe it is indeed a Zahavian weakness - look I'm so much of a fighter that I can go into battle with an obvious weakness, like a peacock's anti-utilitarian "catch me if you can" tail.
The big downside of bow ties is that they are not-one-size-fits-all. Mike Tyson and Mackenzie Crook can't swap bow ties but they could trade dangly ties.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. Bow ties are cool.

Bow ties are indeed cool, and they say a great deal about the wearer. Due to the nature of work I was in, I often wore an elasticated bow tie, but I remember standing at a bar one evening, and this beautiful MILF remarked "Now that's my kind of man". Unfortunately I didn't fully comprehend what she was trying to tell me.
      ¡C'est la vie!

Then leaving the end dangling out as an invitation to anyone who might wish to to grab it and strangle the crap out of me...

Rather like long nails on a woman, to advertise that she does not engage in domestic chores of any kind... a member of the leisure class...
But to require someone who actually engages in physical activity to wear one is either idiocy of the highest order , or sadism....

I just looked it up and its history is as stupid as one might expect.
It seems to have is roots in roman soldiers wearing a type of scarf to identify what regiment they belong to. This was carried forward in various countries military tradition and it seemed to have remained a rather functional piece of clothing untill a french king started wearing his enterpretation of it and all of europe wanted to jump on the fashion bandwagon.
      Thanks a lot France. -.-

I wore a scarf or bandanna most of my life ...What soldiers call a "dog rag"...
It is an amazingly functional piece of equipment .
Ours are always made out of pure cotton, as synthetics will melt and stick to your skin if you catch on fire...
A neckerchief , to keep your throat warm.
It is soft to keep you from chafing your neck ,against your shirt collar or body armor, while you are constantly turning your head back and fourth , looking for ambushes...
It covers your mouth and nose when dust and smoke are clogging your breathing,
A wash cloth , soaked in water for your face and arms...
It can be worn as a head covering to keep the sun off, under a helmet to soak up sweat , and keep it from running down into your face...
A headband to do the same thing..
A covering for your eyes if you have to try and sleep during the day , and patrol at night.
A wound dressing if you get hurt,
A tourniquet to stop bleeding if the wound is more serious,
A sling for a broken arm..
Bindings to tie a broken leg onto splints...
A cleaning rag to clean your optics ...
If you cut off a bit and burn it inside a can, you have char cloth , to start fires , using flint and steel...
Torn in strips , to tie poles together when building a shelter...
Draped over the mouth of your canteen as a filter to strain out all the dirt and little wigglies...before you treat your water with purification pills...
      More uses are probably apparent...
But a tie ? Well...it makes a pretty poor headband...
It has some interesting applications in the BDSM world...you know, to keep from chafing your girlfriend's wrists...but that's about it...

Back in 1996, I was on stage in a production of Moliere's "Tartuffe" in Santa Cruz, and there was a moment in which I had a costume change in about 60 seconds for each performance. Part of that costume change involved tying a bow tie (one of those 19th century looking bigger ones rather than the modern standard today). I had to practice tying a bow tie until I could get it down in about 20 seconds flat (given that we had to put on pants and a shirt and jacket and shoes in that 60 second costume change).
I practiced it so often to get it right that I don't think I'll ever, ever, forget it for the rest of my life.
Also, don't forget that Jon Pertwee, and Matt Smith wore bow ties of one sort or another. Bow ties are cool (as Matt would say).

It is my firm belief that superheros only have capes to inicate to the onlooker the direction they are flying (which is always towards the danger). Similarly a group of businessmen will know that danger is near and where to flee when they see a distressed member of their group running by with his necktie flopping over his shoulder.

lol, I love you, Lloyd, but I must disagree on some points. 1. Easily get a tie clip/pin to stop awkward floppiness. 2. That's not the part that tightens the slipknot so no danger there. 3. Even when the bit that tightens the knot is engaged, there still needs to be pressure on the knot itself to tighten it, so still no danger. 4. A removed long tie is a shape much more conducive to whip- snapping people and pets and, what more should I want to end my gruelling work day with than a little cat- and/or wife- pestering? 5. No woman has ever seductively pulled a man in for a kiss by his bowtie because it's awkward and feels silly.

But a good hand-tied bow tie is absolutely gorgeous in its own right and at the right time!
All of these are, of course, completely superficial additions to an outfit, a remnant of a time long past where men mimicked some birds attempting to win over mates with garish plumage!
