Just an amazing songwriter. What's he's lost in vocal range over the years is made up by the strength of the songs and his dedication to craft. Great performance by Gordo.
And I believe one who could be his female counterpart, Lucinda Williams, suffered one not too long back. Supposedly she is determined to make a comeback. We shall see.
I'm so saddened to learn that Gordon Lightfoot has recently passed away at age 84. He was my favorite artist and songwriter and my earliest, most powerful musical influence. When people ask me why I so admired his artistry, it boils down to the qualities he and his art richly possessed: 1) The arrangments of his recordings were always clean and perfect; 2) His lyrics were a window to his soul, to his love of Canada and the loves he won and lost. He is Canada's greatest songwriter and deservedly belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of contemporary songwriters. Right up there with greats like Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and and Billy Joel; 3) He always sounded great in a live setting. You could always hear his lyrics clearly, a testament to his singing chops and his sound man's skills; 4) He was a decent guy who'd wait even on cold evenings after shows, even if he was weary, to sign fans' autograph requests, take a picture with them or share a few words. All of them; I'll never forget him; 5) He turned his life around by quitting drinking, a cuationary tale for party animals everywhere 6) His formidable songbook has earned him an enviably large slice of musical immortality. His songs have been covered by many artists in the pas.t and will no doubt continue to be. well into the future ; 7) Bob Dylan once said Lightfoot was his favorite songwriter. To me, that says it all. Can't wait for some online hater troll, sitting in his shorts, staring at the screen in his man-cave, to try to refute any of that. Rest in peace, Gordon! Thanks for all those great songs!!! Say hi to Tommy Hunter and Lenny Breaux for me, once you get your room up there in musical heaven! They're currently playing in a foursome along with Wilf Carter and Pete Seeger, but I hear they're looking for a lead singer with long hair who plays six- and twelve-string Gibson guitars to round out the group. Stay loose.
I can remember being 10 or 12 years old, laying in my bedroom on a summer morning, listening to this tune over and over. I tried to understand what the song was about. Now, it's that memory that makes me love this song so much. Sometimes the message behind a song---as truthful and valid as it may be---doesn't really matter as much as the memories the song carries for each individual.
Same for me. He inspired me more than any other artist to learn guitar and to get the courage to sing in front of people. I sing and play dozens of his songs and people always enjoy them.
Saw him before the bs lockdown, in 2020, I loved it. He had aged, yet his words will live forever. Great inspiration he was. God Bless you "Ol' Gordo"...I love you, and will miss you. Pray I get to hear music when I get to Heaven, if I do. 🙏😇😉
I still get goose bumps after all these years listening to GL. His was songwriting at it's best, lyrically and musically. It was a real treat to finally see him last year, wish I could tell him how his music touched me but I guess he has an idea from all of us.
In the northern Utah market, this song was a Top 40 hit in the summer of 1972 despite being only a B-side. I'd listen to it on the radio to imitate and learn the guitar part.
Gordon Lightfoot is the reason I wanted to play guitar and still do, especially my 12 string. My wife, Lynn Kellogg really admires Gordon and his band, having opened for many of his concerts. What a Blessing to the world of music.
one of my most favorite songs in life. What a fantastic way to share this story. Like so many filled my heart and captured the minds and imaginations of generations. Yep, generations.
The way Gordon tells a story with music it's amazing, I don't know of anyone who does it so well, as he sings it, narrates it and the images just flood your mind. freaking awesome.
Love this song Gordo....my favorite.....can't tell you the hundreds of times I'd close my eyes and listen to the lyrics while the mastery of your guitar carried me through the story to the sad and tragic climax of modern day despair.. Beautiful...Simply beautiful.
Don Quixote Through the woodland, through the valley Comes a horseman wild and free Tilting at the windmills passing Who can the brave young horseman be He is wild but he is mellow He is strong but he is weak He is cruel but he is gentle He is wise but he is meek --- Reaching for his saddlebag He takes a battered book into his hand Standing like a prophet bold He shouts across the ocean to the shore Till he can shout no more --- I have come o'er moor and mountain Like the hawk upon the wing I was once a shining knight Who was the guardian of a king I have searched the whole world over Looking for a place to sleep I have seen the strong survive And I have seen the lean grown weak ---- See the children of the earth Who wake to find the table bare See the gentry in the country Riding off to take the air ---- Reaching for his saddlebag He takes a rusty sword into his hand Then striking up a knightly pose He shouts across the ocean to the shore Till he can shout no more --- See the jailor with his key Who locks away all trace of sin See the judge upon the bench Who tries the case as best he can See the wise and wicked ones Who feed upon life's sacred fire See the soldier with his gun Who must be dead to be admired --- See the man who tips the needle See the man who buys and sells See the man who puts the collar On the ones who dare not tell See the drunkard in the tavern Stemming gold to make ends meet See the youth in ghetto black Condemned to life upon the street --- Reaching for his saddlebag He takes a tarnished cross into his hand Then standing like a preacher now He shouts across the ocean to the shore Then in a blaze of tangled hooves He gallops off across the dusty plain In vain to search again Where no one will hear --- Through the woodland, through the valley Comes a horseman wild and free Tilting at the windmills passing Who can the brave young horseman be He is wild but he is mellow He is strong but he is weak He is cruel but he is gentle He is wise but he is meek ---- By Gordon Lightfoot
I love your music! I met your nephew in Florida and he called you and we spoke on the phone for a little while! He wanted me to go to Australia with him, and he said he was from Vancouver. He gave me his guitar it was a Ventura! Many blessings to you and your family!
being everything that will help you win....... will you be the one that does.......win In the end... words say what swords said in the past.....trying to win the damsel in distress....we moved on using words instead of swords ... have we learned anything ....... words can cut as much as that ........if we are not gentlemen speaking to each other ...... being a respectful one ......
Ha ha, too funny, when I was about 10-12 years old, I listened to this song the same way, over and over....I like to think I sing it quite well, too. and still love the way it flows...I like a lot of new stuff, but somehow the lasting thoughts and sounds of music like this, are always great memories......how's that go? don't make them like they used to....oh, what about Justin Bieber? just kidding, go Justin, all the best to you too, people don't know what they would do in your shoes and you are in them, all the best if you did marry Selena, she seems like a sweetheart and would be good for you, just hold on to that, and enjoy Gordon Lightfoot, and if you want to redo this song, let me know..... And if you want to join me at the Playboy mansion, like the photo on the left, let's do that too!!! ;-)
I consider this one of the greatest songs ever written.
Same
🙏😇👍
I love it every time. It sometimes wanders from my mind, but when it returns its like that beloved friend who visits with grand tales to tell.
Has anyone seen the movie? Do you know the year it came out? Thanks.
I m rather inclined to AGREE with you

And to think he recovered from a massive stroke to do this. Amazing.
Well said
@@squamish4244 Did not know that. When was it?
@@khmak9387 About 15 years ago.

I had the same experience!
Ah, the frustration of trying to understand the world and fight it’s problems, until cynicism and age take over. My favourite GL song.
🙏😇👍

Dear Gordon, after all these years, you still make this world shed a tear with your beautiful music. God bless you!
I first heard this song 48 yrs ago and I've been tilting at windmills ever since. GL is simply the best......Canada's favourite son.

Been listening since 1978. Still my favorite. Hits my heart with every song.
🙏😇👍
I also had the great privilege to finally see him in concert more recently in his later years❤️

Thank God for people like this who give some light on this dark path called life.
Amen.
Love his music easy listening what a fine poet

sorry for your loss
Great songwriting skills, every song carves out a story. Soldier on Gordon Lightfoot.
God Bless you Gordon! A poet, song writer, and a very fine human being!
Wonderful performance by one of the best singer-songwiters ever. I love this song
I have loved his music since childhood (thank you, Dad), and this has remained my favorite. Farewell to a brilliant artist ♥
Love Gordon...song about one of my family.
one of my most favorite songs in life. What a fantastic way to share this story. Like so many filled my heart and captured the minds and imaginations of generations. Yep, generations.

This is the music of life....I still play my vinyls when I need a balance.....
He was in a(n especially) good place this night in Reno...
Don Quixote
Through the woodland, through the valley
Comes a horseman wild and free
Tilting at the windmills passing
Who can the brave young horseman be
He is wild but he is mellow
He is strong but he is weak
He is cruel but he is gentle
He is wise but he is meek
---
Reaching for his saddlebag
He takes a battered book into his hand
Standing like a prophet bold
He shouts across the ocean to the shore
Till he can shout no more
---
I have come o'er moor and mountain
Like the hawk upon the wing
I was once a shining knight
Who was the guardian of a king
I have searched the whole world over
Looking for a place to sleep
I have seen the strong survive
And I have seen the lean grown weak
----
See the children of the earth
Who wake to find the table bare
See the gentry in the country
Riding off to take the air
----
Reaching for his saddlebag
He takes a rusty sword into his hand
Then striking up a knightly pose
He shouts across the ocean to the shore
Till he can shout no more
---
See the jailor with his key
Who locks away all trace of sin
See the judge upon the bench
Who tries the case as best he can
See the wise and wicked ones
Who feed upon life's sacred fire
See the soldier with his gun
Who must be dead to be admired
---
See the man who tips the needle
See the man who buys and sells
See the man who puts the collar
On the ones who dare not tell
See the drunkard in the tavern
Stemming gold to make ends meet
See the youth in ghetto black
Condemned to life upon the street
---
Reaching for his saddlebag
He takes a tarnished cross into his hand
Then standing like a preacher now
He shouts across the ocean to the shore
Then in a blaze of tangled hooves
He gallops off across the dusty plain
In vain to search again
Where no one will hear
---
Through the woodland, through the valley
Comes a horseman wild and free
Tilting at the windmills passing
Who can the brave young horseman be
He is wild but he is mellow
He is strong but he is weak
He is cruel but he is gentle
He is wise but he is meek
----

absolutely beautiful, never see this live, wow!!!!!!!
Glad to hear o Gordo again. He is a classic.
Got to see him in Portland, ME finally a few years ago….great performance
Damn I miss this man. Belongs on the Mt Rushmore of folk music. A legend with few peers.
So damn good
RIP Gord
I have tickets to see Gord in Vancouver this October. Sure, he's lost some vocal vitality, but it's the songs that bring me back again, and again.
we are so fortunate to grow up with Gordon, Joni and Bob Dylan.
Thanks so much for posting this. It will ever and always be one of my most beloved songs. Never stop tilting at the windmills!

Many blessings to you and your family!
His group is stellar on Don Quixote..
"...in a blaze of tangled hoofs"-only Gordon.
Sleipnir knows The Way.
thanks for posting this; heard it in '72, so this brings many a pleasant memory
Saw G. L. Twice in Davenport, Ia. If you ever have the opportunity to see him, TAKE IT! And who are these '8' that gave this a thumbs down?
He spins beautiful webs with words!
He is still the best
So different from the record version, but still so good.
Nicely done. Still sounding good.
Hell I wish! Hell of a man!!!
I am here because I am a fantastic taste in music.
*¡enjoyed at 7:49 pm Pacific DayLight Savings Time on Friday, 21 October 2022!*
I have become The Knight.

Who's the other guitarist? At first I thought it was Mark Knopfler, but it can't be!
Terry Clements. he joined lightfoots band in 1969. Sadly he passed away in 2011.
